Six years ago, I noticed a small area of depigmentation on my right flank, which I initially dismissed as a minor skin issue,\u201d the 70-year-old said.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, she said the spot turned into a \u201cnon-healing ulcer\u201d, causing her concern and discomfort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe discomfort became a part of my daily life, impacting my ability to perform routine tasks,\u201d the woman said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I finally consulted a dermatologist, I was diagnosed with skin cancer, mostly exacerbated by the chronic friction and pressure from the tightness of the saree tied around my waist,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-1kv918u-0 jUXVLw\">\n<figure class=\"sc-1cbdeug-0 cpcmmN\"><figcaption class=\"sc-1cbdeug-1 sc-1cbdeug-3 hiCdLa liXvvg\">Breast cancer diagnoses among younger women<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>In another case, doctors describe a woman in her late 60s with an ulcer on her right flank that wouldn\u2019t heal for 2 years.<\/p>\n<p>She too wore a saree every day, a traditional type called a \u201clugda\u201d tied very tightly around the waist without an underskirt.<\/p>\n<p>This woman too was found to have Marjolin ulcer, which had spread to one of her lymph nodes in her groin.<\/p>\n<p>The cancer type develops in chronic burn wounds, non-healing wounds, leg ulcers, tuberculous skin nodules, and in scars developing from vaccination and snake bites, scientists say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe exact process by which chronic ulcers or wounds become malignant is unknown, although many theories have been proposed,\u201d they say.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-482ou5-2 eOHevC image align-none\">\n<figure class=\"sc-1cbdeug-0 cpcmmN\">\n<div data-gallery-length=\"2\" class=\"sc-482ou5-0 bMNYPq\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2024\/11\/06\/03\/GettyImages-902935188.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2024\/11\/06\/03\/GettyImages-902935188.jpg?quality=75&amp;width=320&amp;auto=webp 320w, https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/2024\/11\/06\/03\/GettyImages-902935188.jpg?quality=75&amp;width=640&amp;auto=webp 640w\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"An Indian woman dries her sari after taking a dip at Sangam during the Magh Mela festival in Allahabad on January 9, 2018\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 iSVhwZ inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p><button class=\"sc-ohzviw-0 gdZNrl inline-gallery-btn\" id=\"trigger-autogallery-3627\"><span class=\"sc-ohzviw-1 ewSUe\">open image in gallery<\/span><\/button><\/p>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"sc-1cbdeug-1 sc-1cbdeug-3 hiCdLa liXvvg\">An Indian woman dries her sari after taking a dip at Sangam during the Magh Mela festival in Allahabad on January 9, 2018<span class=\"sc-1cbdeug-7 izyooE\"> <!-- -->(<!-- -->AFP via Getty Images<!-- -->)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Even lesions that are continuously irritated may have a higher risk of turning malignant, researchers note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConstant pressure at the waist often leads to cutaneous atrophy, which ultimately breaks down to form an erosion or an ulcer. The ulcer at this site does not heal entirely due to ongoing pressure from tight clothing. A chronic non-healing wound results, which may develop malignant change,\u201d they write.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors recommend wearing a loose petticoat beneath the saree and wearing loose clothing if wounds develop to ease pressure on the skin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has been a psychologically and physically taxing journey.
