{"id":122810,"date":"2024-11-06T19:21:32","date_gmt":"2024-11-06T12:21:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=122810"},"modified":"2024-11-06T19:21:32","modified_gmt":"2024-11-06T12:21:32","slug":"new-cancer-discovery-releases-brakes-on-immune-system-to-treat-stubborn-tumors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=122810","title":{"rendered":"New Cancer Discovery Releases \u201cBrakes\u201d On Immune System To Treat Stubborn Tumors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p id=\"isPasted\">A serendipitous discovery may lead to a new way of fighting cancer \u2013 even tumors that are resistant to immunotherapy \u2013 by suppressing a mechanism that cancer cells use to evade the body\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iflscience.com\/immunotherapy-training-the-body-to-fight-cancer-40206\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">immune system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt all happened by coincidence,\u201d explained study lead Professor Carmit Levy of Tel Aviv University, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/english.tau.ac.il\/research\/cancer-tumors-elimination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">statement<\/a>. \u201cMy lab studies both cancer and the effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun on our skin and body \u2013 both of which are known to suppress the immune system. Cancer suppresses approaching immune cells and solar radiation suppresses the skin&#8217;s immune system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile in most cases, we cancer researchers worldwide focus on the tumor and look for mechanisms by which cancer inhibits the immune system,\u201d Levy continued, \u201chere we proposed a different approach: investigating how UV exposure suppresses the immune system and applying our findings to cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Together with colleagues with expertise in the immune system, and led by MD\/PhD candidate Avishai Maliah, Levy and the team set out to explore their hypothesis in an animal model.<\/p>\n<p>They exposed mice to UVB radiation \u2013 that\u2019s the type of UV that causes sunburn if you stay out for too long without <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iflscience.com\/sunscreen-vs-sunblock-whats-the-difference-75374\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sunscreen<\/a>, but can also be used in phototherapy for skin conditions like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/public\/diseases\/psoriasis\/treatment\/medications\/phototherapy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">psoriasis<\/a>. In fact, the authors point out, sunlight has been used to treat autoimmune skin disorders \u201cfor more than 3,500 years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAvishai examined the behavior of dozens of proteins post-UV exposure, and surprisingly discovered a significant rise in the level of a relatively unexplored protein called Ly6a,\u201d Levy said. \u201cThis unexpected finding led us to investigate further, to understand the protein function and whether it is involved in the immune suppression process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team suspected that Ly6a might act as an immune \u201cbrake\u201d, preventing the immune system from going into overdrive and attacking the body\u2019s own healthy cells. When the skin is exposed to UV radiation, it kickstarts a series of immune responses as the cells try to protect themselves \u2013 but at the same time, these brakes are activated to stop the response from going too far.<\/p>\n<p>As well as being expressed in response to UV, the team discovered that Ly6a naturally occurs at high levels in cancerous tumors \u2013 they observed this both in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iflscience.com\/world-first-mrna-vaccine-for-skin-cancer-commences-landmark-phase-3-trial-73977\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">melanoma<\/a> and in colon cancer. \u201cEvidently, we have discovered a general mechanism through which cancer tumors desensitize the immune system,\u201d Levy said.<\/p>\n<p><span contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" class=\"fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What Causes Cancer?\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kTrMlJctgu4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><span class=\"fr-mk\" style=\"display: none;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>When the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iflscience.com\/most-detailed-3d-tumor-atlases-reveal-immune-hot-zones-and-cancer-neighborhoods-76582\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tumors<\/a> were treated with anti-Ly6a antibodies, effectively releasing the brakes and allowing the immune system to attack, the team saw that the tumors were significantly reduced. Importantly, the effect was also seen in cancers that are resistant to current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iflscience.com\/new-multiple-myeloma-immunotherapy-puts-90-percent-of-patients-into-full-remission-69156\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">immunotherapies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImmunotherapy has revolutionized the treatment of cancer. However, about 50 percent of the patients do not respond to the currently prevailing treatment \u2013 the protein <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iflscience.com\/immunotherapy-eradicates-tumors-of-terminally-ill-cancer-patients-in-landmark-trial-61259\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PD1<\/a>,\u201d said co-lead Professor Yaron Carmi. \u201cWe discovered a new protein, Ly6a, and found that its antibody eradicated tumors in our model animals \u2013 even those resistant to PD1 therapy.
