Over-60s are 27 percent more likely to develop dementia if they lose just 1 percent of this deep sleep each year, a 2023 study found.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/stages-of-sleep\/slow-wave-sleep\">Slow-wave sleep<\/a> is the third stage of a human 90-minute sleep cycle, lasting about 20\u201340 minutes. It&#8217;s the most restful stage, where brain waves and heart rate slow and blood pressure drops.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Deep sleep strengthens our muscles, bones, and immune system, and prepares our brains to absorb more information. Recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/theres-one-critical-thing-we-can-all-do-to-keep-alzheimers-symptoms-at-bay\">research discovered<\/a> that individuals with Alzheimer&#8217;s-related changes in their brain did better on memory tests when they got more slow-wave sleep.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Slow-wave sleep, or deep sleep, supports the aging brain in many ways, and we know that sleep augments the clearance of metabolic waste from the brain, including facilitating the clearance of proteins that aggregate in  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/go\/IaO\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73015\" data-postid=\"142759\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a> disease,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monash.edu\/news\/articles\/improving-deep-sleep-may-prevent-dementia,-study-finds\">said<\/a> neuroscientist Matthew Pase from Monash University in Australia.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, to date we have been unsure of the role of slow-wave sleep in the development of dementia. Our findings suggest that slow-wave sleep loss may be a modifiable dementia risk factor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Pase and colleagues from Australia, Canada, and the US examined 346 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.framinghamheartstudy.org\/\">Framingham Heart Study<\/a> participants who had completed two overnight sleep studies between 1995 and 1998 and between 2001 and 2003, with an average of five years between testing periods.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>This community-based cohort, who had no record of dementia at the time of the 2001-2003 study, and were over 60 years old in 2020, gave researchers a chance to look into the link between two factors over time by comparing the datasets from the two in-depth polysomnography sleep studies, and then monitoring for dementia among participants up until 2018.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We used these to examine how slow-wave sleep changed with aging and whether changes in slow-wave sleep percentage were associated with the risk of later-life dementia up to 17 years later,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monash.edu\/news\/articles\/improving-deep-sleep-may-prevent-dementia,-study-finds\">said<\/a> Pase.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_142772\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-142772\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/11\/brain_waves_list.jpg\" alt=\"brain with different waves\" width=\"642\" height=\"481\" class=\"wp-image-142772 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/11\/brain_waves_list.jpg 642w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/11\/brain_waves_list-554x415.jpg 554w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/11\/brain_waves_list-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-142772\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brain waves can be fast (top) or slow (bottom) depending on our state of  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/consciousness\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73104\" data-postid=\"142759\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">consciousness<\/a>. (selvanegra\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the 17 years of follow-up, 52 dementia cases were recorded among the participants. Participants&#8217; slow-wave sleep levels recorded in the sleep studies were also examined for a link to dementia cases.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Overall, their rate of slow-wave sleep was found to decrease from age 60 onward, with this loss peaking between the ages of 75 and 80 and then leveling off after that.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>By comparing participants&#8217; first and second sleep studies, researchers discovered a link between each percentage point decrease in slow-wave sleep per year and a 27 percent increased risk of developing dementia.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>That risk increased to 32 percent when they zeroed in on Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, the most common form of dementia.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The Framingham Heart Study measures multiple health data points over time, including hippocampal volume loss (an early sign of Alzheimer&#8217;s) and common factors contributing to cardiovascular disease.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Low levels of slow-wave sleep were linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, taking medications that can impact sleep, and having the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/genetics-and-family-history\/alzheimers-disease-genetics-fact-sheet\">APOE \u03b54 gene<\/a>, which is linked to Alzheimer&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We found that a genetic risk factor for Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, but not brain volume, was associated with accelerated declines in slow wave sleep,&#8221; Pase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monash.edu\/news\/articles\/improving-deep-sleep-may-prevent-dementia,-study-finds\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Although these are clear associations, the authors note this type of study doesn&#8217;t prove that slow-wave sleep loss causes dementia, and it&#8217;s possible dementia-related brain processes cause sleep loss. For these factors to be fully understood, more research is required.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>We certainly can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-cult-of-the-sleepless\">prioritize getting enough sleep<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/want-better-sleep-this-one-piece-of-advice-seems-to-work-for-almost-everybody\">the meantime<\/a> \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/link-between-alzheimer-s-disease-and-sleep-apnea-discovered-in-brain-tissue\">it&#8217;s important<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/deep-sleep-is-the-anti-anxiety-drug-we-ve-been-looking-for-brain-scans-reveal\">more than strengthening our memory<\/a>.
