But the billionaire and his business empire face both positives and negatives after Trump won back the presidency in Tuesday\u2019s election.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm35s63dq000d3b6mm27ycoda@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Musk has donated nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/25\/politics\/fundraising-takeaways-elon-musk-harris-trump\/index.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">$119 million<\/a> so far to a political action committee he set up to support Trump, according to Federal Election Commission filings. He\u2019s appeared with Trump at rallies and hosted a fawning interview with him on X, his social media platform.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34wq7ve00043b6mhcqod5k5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHe\u2019s bet big here. He dove into the deep end of the pool on this election,\u201d said Daniel Ives, tech analyst at Wedbush Securities.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm35s3e9m00003b6mum7plbsd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Early Wednesday, investors were already betting that Trump\u2019s win will also be a win for Musk\u2019s major public holding, Tesla (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/TSLA\">TSLA<\/a>), sending shares of his electric vehicle maker up 13% at the market open. That lifted the value of the 411 million shares of Tesla that Musk owns outright by more than $13 billion, which works out to a better than a 11,000% return on the $119 million he donated to Trump. But there are risks for Tesla, even from Trump\u2019s victory.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34wqgc2000y3b6mdt8dh7vo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Much of Musk\u2019s massive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/11\/14\/investing\/elon-musk-wealth-taxpayer-support\/index.html\">net worth can be traced to the government<\/a> support his companies, such as Tesla and SpaceX, have received over the years. Even if Vice President Kamala Harris had won, much of that money would have continued to flow. But even if some of the government support for electric vehicles is now trimmed or cut off, as is likely with Trump\u2019s victory, Musk\u2019s wealth will remain firmly intact. In fact, Tesla could benefit if government support for EVs ends.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34xcju000043b6myjdjhgdj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Musk posted <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1854047333958254597\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">numerous tweets<\/a> on his social media platform X late Tuesday and early Wednesday celebrating Trump\u2019s victory.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm35sr310000i3b6mmpqbhy1h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe people of America gave <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@realDonaldTrump<\/a> a crystal clear mandate for change tonight,\u201d he wrote in one of them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm35tpqji000m3b6mo6ysabei@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump has been openly hostile to electric vehicles, saying they are too expensive, have limited range, and will destroy jobs and the American auto industry. But what might seem like the biggest blow to Tesla from another Trump presidency \u2014 a reduction, if not the end of federal support for EVs \u2014 might not be all that bad for Tesla and Musk.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34xj3xp00063b6menwfkhqq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But other policies that are the center of Trump\u2019s plans could cause major problems.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34wq7ve00083b6mwhyyqud2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump has vowed to end something he calls \u201cBiden\u2019s EV mandate,\u201d even though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/10\/politics\/fact-check-trump-pennsylvania-speeches\/index.html\">no such mandate exists<\/a>, and it is unclear what he is referring to.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34wq7ve00093b6mxvkdwivn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But under Biden there has been significant government support for building and buying EVs, including billions of dollars in loans to encourage automakers to invest in factories to build EVs and batteries in the United States, support for charging stations and a $7,500 tax credit to many electric car buyers.\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/cm34z0cbu00033b6mlwcpv2zo@published\" class=\"image image__hide-placeholder\" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-name=\"GettyImages-2176994491.jpg\" data-component-name=\"image\" data-observe-resizes=\"\" data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\" data-original-ratio=\"0.6665\" data-original-height=\"1333\" data-original-width=\"2000\" data-url=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/gettyimages-2176994491.jpg?c=original\" data-editable=\"settings\">\n<div class=\"image__container \" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\">\n       <picture class=\"image__picture\"><source height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 1280px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/gettyimages-2176994491.jpg?q=w_1110,c_fill\/f_webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 960px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/gettyimages-2176994491.jpg?q=w_1015,c_fill\/f_webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/gettyimages-2176994491.jpg?q=w_1160,c_fill\/f_webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(max-width: 479px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/gettyimages-2176994491.jpg?q=w_680,c_fill\/f_webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/gettyimages-2176994491.jpg?q=w_1110,c_fill\" alt=\"Elon Musk steps onto stage as Republican presidential nominee, former President Donald Trump addresses a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on October 5.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34wq7ve000a3b6mlah2az7v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many industry experts believe Trump will end those programs. Trump could order the Treasury Department to change the rules that determine when car buyers qualify for the credit, greatly limiting the tax credit\u2019s availability. Or, if Trump has a Republican-controlled Congress, he could get legislation passed to eliminate the credit all together.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34wq7ve000b3b6mwsq8zqlp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Musk has said he\u2019s not worried about the end of the tax credit, as Tesla sees it as a boon to legacy automakers\u2019<strong> <\/strong>efforts to move into the EV market and provide more competition.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34wq7ve000d3b6mr35p4pe5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cTake away the subsidies. It will only help Tesla,\u201d Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1813112958157005259\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted<\/a> on X in July.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34wq7ve000e3b6mjmc2qryc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Thanks to increased competition, Tesla\u2019s global sales sank 2% in the first nine months of this year compared to last year. Sales and profit managed to improve in the third quarter, but it was the first time the company had ever seen such a drop in its history.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34wq7ve000f3b6mvx9t9ogy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump might be more likely to give a green light to Musk\u2019s true self-driving vehicles, yet to be made,<strong> <\/strong>Ives said, along with a fleet of so-called \u201crobotaxis\u201d to give rides without any sort of driver on board.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm35ul3y100003b6ms0r6azui@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Garrett Nelson, analyst with CFRA Research, agreed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm360t63c00043b6misz3v2z7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIn our view, Tesla and CEO Elon Musk are perhaps the biggest winners from the election result, and we believe Trump\u2019s victory will help expedite regulatory approval of the company\u2019s autonomous driving technology,\u201d he said in a note to clients Wednesday, raising his recommendation on Tesla stock from a \u201cHold\u201d to a \u201cBuy.\u201d He raised his 12-month price target for the stock by $110 to $375 a share.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34wq7ve000g3b6mbjf0ir1w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So far the company\u2019s existing driver assist features, known as Autopilot and Full Self-Driving, or FSD, are facing probes from federal safety regulators after a series of crashes involving the technology. Those investigations could slow approval of true self-driving Tesla cars being allowed on roads, despite Musk\u2019s widely disputed claim that Teslas using FSD are already safer than those driven by humans.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34wrai600133b6m62oi9x6e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cUnder Trump those investigations could slowly disappear,\u201d Ives said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34wq7ve000h3b6msbowo1h4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Not all government support for EVs is likely to vanish in Trump\u2019s next administration. Beyond the buyers\u2019 tax credit, much of the taxpayer dollars being spent to support EV adoption comes in the form of government loans to automakers and their suppliers to build plants in southern \u201cred\u201d states. It\u2019s not likely Trump would want to cut that support, and the promise of jobs in those states, even if they will eventually provide competition for Musk and Tesla.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34wq7ve000i3b6mzn21xawy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Traditional automakers say they will move ahead with their plans to build and sell more EVs in the future. They say EVs are the future for the industry, even if the adoption rate has slowed recently.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34wq7ve000j3b6mh4lss3cd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt is not a strategy where we handicap the presidential election or the next one and the next one and see what we can get away with the EPA,\u201d said Ford CEO Jim Farley to investors in July. \u201cThe only way we believe to be enduring is to make money on small EVs. And that\u2019s our bet.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm35003pa00003b6mra5efj41@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The automakers are making a push to sell more EVs so the companies can meet increasingly tough environmental regulations in the United States, Europe and Asia. Even if Trump gets the EPA to change emission rules here, automakers will maintain an incentive to keep making EVs to meet regulations elsewhere, or tougher environmental rules in many US states, including California, which has its own tougher emission rules followed by many other states.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm355v7mm000z3b6mecme7zp2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Industry experts say they don\u2019t expect the growth of EV sales to stop, even if Trump changes the emission rules, due partly to growing demand by consumers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm355rtuo000x3b6mumw9gito@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe might see a much slower adoption of EVs (with a regulation change),\u201d said Jeff Schuster, global head of automotive at GlobalData, an industry consultant. \u201cBut with all the investment, we\u2019re not likely to see it reversed.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34wq7ve000k3b6mllrmerw9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The bigger problem for Tesla with Trump\u2019s win is that there could be a renewed trade war with China, said Ives, given the importance of its plant in Shanghai to its global sales and profits.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm34wq7ve000l3b6mf2qpj63v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With Trump\u2019s victory, \u201che\u2019ll be much harsher on China, and then the negatives could outweigh the positives for Tesla,\u201d Ives said. \u201cOver 40% of deliveries come from the China market.
