The risk of developing dementia <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25031288\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than doubles<\/a> in those with this syndrome, which was first described in 2013.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv800063b6m3iaakpxr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPrevious studies have shown a link between sleep disorders and the risk of dementia,\u201d said first study author Dr. Victoire Leroy, assistant professor of geriatric medicine at Tours University Hospital in France, via email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv800073b6mkltajrg3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But some of those scientific reports examined that link largely at only one point in time, according to the study. Not much has been known about the relationship between certain aspects of poor-quality sleep and pre-dementia syndromes, either, Leroy and the research team wrote \u2014 so they wanted to expand the research in this field.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv800083b6mk7mwi002@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEstablishing the relationship between sleep dysfunction and MCR risk is important because early intervention may offer the best hope for preventing dementia,\u201d the authors said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv800093b6mup6vw2xt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The findings are based on 445 adults who were age 76 on average and recruited from New York\u2019s Westchester County for the Central Control of Mobility and Aging study, which assesses the cognitive processes and brain mechanisms that regulate mobility in aging. Participants walked on treadmills so their initial gaits could be recorded, then were assessed annually from 2011 to 2018.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000a3b6ma1r9nody@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The study authors also collected yearly data on participants\u2019 recollections of their sleep quality and quantity in the two weeks leading up to the assessments. Specifically, the team gleaned details within seven components of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index: subjective sleep quality, time it takes to fall asleep, sleep duration, sleep efficiency (ratio of total hours asleep to total hours in bed), sleep disturbances, use of sleep-inducing medication, and daytime dysfunction, such as having trouble staying awake during activities or feeling less enthusiasm to get things done.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000b3b6msytky1yx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over a follow-up period of roughly three years on average, 36 participants developed motoric cognitive risk syndrome. Compared with \u201cgood\u201d sleepers, \u201cpoor\u201d sleepers had only a slightly higher risk of MCR. But when the authors considered the seven sleep components separately, only daytime dysfunction was associated with 3.3 times higher risk of MCR.<strong\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000c3b6m6kphwa5w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The study findings may help physicians and patients be more open to asking questions about sleep patterns, and to looking more closely at walking speed when making an early diagnosis, said Dr. Richard Isaacson, director of research at the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases in Florida. Richardson wasn\u2019t involved in the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000d3b6mpdrzxelu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The study has a few \u201cserious\u201d limitations, said Dr. Tara Spires-Jones, professor of neurodegeneration and director of the Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, via email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000e3b6mb0vidfdv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe sleep measurements were self-reported, not measured by a scientist, and these self-reports could be biased by people with memory issues,\u201d said Spires-Jones, who wasn\u2019t involved in the study. \u201cThe participants in the study were also largely white, and the group was much smaller than similar single-timepoint studies, so the results will be stronger if confirmed in future studies.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000f3b6mml6907lm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The authors acknowledged that while the length of their study, at roughly three years, is longer than that of some previous research, the follow-up period is still short.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000g3b6ma2ou5j2d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Motoric cognitive risk syndrome is newly identified, so experts still have a lot to learn before they can explain in detail<strong> <\/strong>what causes it and how it affects the body, Isaacson said. This is complicated by the lack of \u201cdefinitive pathological biomarkers\u201d for MCR thus far, Isaacson said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000h3b6m7665gzj6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But \u201cseveral mechanisms might explain this association,\u201d Leroy said. \u201cSleep plays a role in \u2018cleaning up\u2019 neurotoxins accumulated in the brain. In addition, previous studies have shown a greater accumulation of proteins associated with Alzheimer\u2019s disease in sleep-deprived individuals.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000i3b6m14yfyt1x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOne possible alternative or additive way is through the activation of brain inflammatory response, which is observed in Alzheimer\u2019s disease and related dementias,\u201d Leroy said.<strong\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000j3b6mdd1n1yof@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s unclear why out of seven sleep components, daytime dysfunction was the only one significantly associated with MCR risk, when one might think that the other six components \u2014 which included sleep quality and quantity \u2014 would play a role in daytime dysfunction, experts said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000k3b6myccu9o05@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Spires-Jones pointed out that for the potential link between daytime dysfunction and MCR,<strong> <\/strong>reverse causation is also possible.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000l3b6mhxhe84sv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cScientific evidence is suggesting that when you are in the early stages of dementia, pathological changes in the brain disrupt sleep,\u201d she added \u2014 meaning it\u2019s \u201clikely the early disease causing sleep disruption, not disruption causing disease.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000m3b6mw7dt0qpj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s well known that sleep disturbances such as <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/24465-rem-sleep-behavior-disorder-rbd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">REM sleep behavior disorder<\/a> can be early predictors of conditions including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/07\/01\/health\/lewy-body-dementia-robin-williams-life-itself-wellness\/index.html\">Lewy body dementia<\/a> or Parkinson\u2019s disease, Isaacson said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000n3b6mx3qdvcvf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The study results show how precious sleep is, Leroy said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000o3b6mgwjyj8pw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            People having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/01\/01\/health\/five-sleep-tips-wellness\/index.html\">trouble with their sleep<\/a> should talk to their doctors, consider completing a sleep questionnaire, and discuss whether an at-home or in-hospital sleep study may be helpful, Isaacson said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000p3b6mij44z26b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere are now many treatments, both drug and non-drug approaches, that may be able to help depending on the exact problem found,\u201d he added. \u201cTreating sleep disturbances should pay dividends for many years, even decades, on overall brain health and dementia prevention.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000q3b6mix8fwtw1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            You can take other measures to protect your brain during aging.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000r3b6mq6tgzrdc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cLiving a healthy lifestyle including eating well, maintaining a healthy weight, keeping your body and brain active, and treating any hearing loss are all ways of boosting brain resilience and likely lowering dementia risk,\u201d Spires-Jones said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000s3b6mtpsfgmxb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is not to blame people who have dementia for their lifestyle choices,\u201d she added. \u201cBest estimates indicate that less than half of the risk of dementia is due to this type of modifiable risk factor with the rest of the risk likely due to genes we inherit.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000t3b6myfzq8a10@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, given the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/newsletters\/sleep-but-better?source=nl-acq_article\">potential to modify your risk<\/a> and the growth of medical research and treatments, Spires-Jones added, there is reason to be hopeful.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm36b8yv8000u3b6mmsn18lf5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If you\u2019re already experiencing mobility issues, fall prevention can help, Isaacson said \u2014 that can include physical and occupational therapy evaluation, and at-home adaptations such as installing bars in the shower, removing clutter and using night-lights.\n    <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async
