They know\u2014just as the world\u2019s dictators have learned\u2014that Trump is an easy mark for flattery; the best way to deal with him is to praise his wisdom, laugh at his jokes, admire his golf game, and call him \u201csir\u201d (or, as a Taliban leader once did, to Trump\u2019s pride, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-independent.com\/tv\/news\/trump-iowa-taliban-biden-b2450337.html\">Your Excellency<\/a>\u201d).<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"113\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cm368x96i000z3b72gwxqtj7w@published\">Still, this tactic can go only so far. Trump is who he is. During his single term as president, Trump made clear that he proclaimed his foreign-policy slogan\u2014\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/parallels\/2017\/02\/06\/513240634\/america-first-from-charles-lindbergh-to-president-trump\">America First<\/a>\u201d\u2014in the same spirit as the isolationists who coined the phrase back in the 1930s, during the rise of Nazi Germany, which they saw as a threat only to people in faraway countries about whom they knew nothing. Trump denounced alliances as a waste of money, openly said he wouldn\u2019t defend any <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2024\/02\/trump-russia-comment-nato-biggest-problem.html\">NATO<\/a> countries that failed to spend as much on their own defense as they\u2019d pledged, and raised doubts about whether he would bother to lift a finger even if they\u2019d met their marks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"68\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cm368x97i00103b72x5d7371j@published\">In this, Trump will face little internal resistance. At the start of his first term, he appointed establishment national security advisers (he was impressed that they looked straight out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2019\/02\/25\/donald-trump-often-uses-central-casting-describe-those-around-him\/2981978002\/\">Central Casting<\/a>) who ended up blocking some of his worst inclinations. This time, he knows the people who share his ideas and will carry out his policies. And with a firm Senate majority, they will easily get confirmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"107\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cm368x98g00113b72mshmig8f@published\">During this\u00a0year\u2019s campaign, he has said he would end the war in Ukraine immediately, even before he takes office\u2014and his one great European friend, Hungarian Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2024\/04\/05\/trump-ukraine-secret-plan\/\">Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/a>, has revealed that Trump told him his \u201cplan\u201d for doing so is simply to cut off aid to Kyiv. Trump has no love for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky; it was their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-49800181\">2019 phone call<\/a>, in which Trump said he\u2019d send anti-tank missiles only if Zelensky released damning material on Hunter Biden, that sparked his first impeachment hearing. Trump has since derided Zelensky as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sLYfi-wZKDc&amp;ab_channel=WION\">salesman<\/a>\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2024\/10\/17\/trump-zelensky-ukraine-war-start\/\">recently said<\/a> the U.S. should have never got involved in the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"125\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cm368x99p00123b72omns63ig@published\">As president, Trump scoffed at U.S. defense treaties in Asia. During his bromance with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/03\/01\/trump-admin-to-end-major-military-exercises-with-south-korea-report\/\">canceled joint military exercises with South Korea<\/a>. He also had no enthusiasm about spilling American blood and treasure to defend Japan, either. When a reporter noted that Japan and South Korea might build their own nuclear arsenals if they started doubting the reliability of the U.S. security umbrella, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/03\/27\/us\/politics\/donald-trump-transcript.html\">replied that maybe they should<\/a>. Over the past year, as if on cue, politicians in <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/blog\/the-buzz\/america-should-loan-south-korea-japan-nuclear-weapons-26195\">Seoul<\/a> and, to some extent, <a href=\"https:\/\/asiatimes.com\/2024\/05\/how-trump-could-push-japan-s-korea-to-go-nuclear\/\">Tokyo<\/a> have started to talk about that possibility. No doubt the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nknews.org\/2024\/11\/trump-on-verge-of-us-election-win-setting-stage-for-north-korea-policy-shift\/\">discussions will intensify<\/a> in the coming days, especially since Trump\u2019s victory comes in the wake of North Korea\u2019s test of a new intercontinental ballistic missile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"63\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cm368x9av00133b729ulom7a2@published\">Midway through Trump\u2019s term, a second-tier Pentagon official\u2014a Trump appointee\u2014told me that U.S. involvement in a nuclear war was less likely under Trump than it had been under Barack Obama. I asked why he thought so. He replied, \u201cBecause a nuclear war would probably start with the U.S. coming to the aid of an ally, and Trump doesn\u2019t give a shit about allies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"98\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cm368x9cf00143b72yv9k44b3@published\">There may be something to this. But if South Korea or Japan built their own atomic weapons, tensions would escalate and an arms race would break out in East Asia. Also, if the U.S. let Putin take over Ukraine, he\u2019d have every reason to believe he could get away with invading the Baltics (a relatively easy task if NATO is removed from the equation) and at the very least intimidating Poland and other former members of Russia\u2019s empire in eastern Europe. Putin\u2019s success in Ukraine would likely embolden Chinese leader Xi Jinping to step up pressure on Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"65\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cm368x9dh00153b72kc40v39h@published\">In both Europe and Asia, many leaders may respond to pressure from Russia or China by striking deals\u2014to use an old-fashioned word, by \u201cappeasement.\u201d Trump might think that by withdrawing from the world, he can spare the U.S. from war\u2014but war would come anyway, and eventually we would be either pulled in or left stranded in a world that\u2019s hostile to our interests and values.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"48\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cm368x9eg00163b72pa6q0c03@published\">It\u2019s a good time to check out some history books on the years between World Wars I and II. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Twenty-Years-Crisis-1919-1939-International\/dp\/0061311227\">E.H. Carr\u2019s <em>The Twenty Years\u2019 Crisis<\/em><\/a> is a good, readable start.) For the past year, ever since Hamas\u2019 Oct. 7 attack, President Joe Biden has tried to strike an uneasy balance, upholding (and abundantly supplying) Israel\u2019s right to defend itself while also encouraging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (with only infrequent success) to minimize death and damage to Palestinian civilians. Trump has openly said that Israel should <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2024\/03\/trump-on-gaza-war-israel-comments-not-what-they-seem.html\">finish<\/a> the war as quickly as possible\u2014not by signing a cease-fire deal (though he wouldn\u2019t necessarily oppose that) but rather by doing whatever Netanyahu thinks he needs to do. This includes razing Gaza, occupying southern Lebanon, even attacking Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities. He and Netanyahu are very tight; neither has done anything to disguise this fact. Trump has even said\u2014and Israeli officials have confirmed\u2014that <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2024\/10\/us-israel-trump-phone-call-netanyahu-gaza-cease-fire-2024-election.html\">the two talk on the phone regularly<\/a>, even though doing so is a violation of the Logan Act and the long-standing idea that the U.S. has just one president at a time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"107\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cm368x9ic00183b72pxkblgex@published\">Netanyahu has never been inclined to make peace without first achieving \u201ctotal victory\u201d over Hamas in Gaza and over Hezbollah in Lebanon, even though his political opponents and some of his military advisers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/12\/world\/middleeast\/netanyahu-gallant-gaza-total-victory.html\">say this goal is infeasible<\/a> and, in any case, endangers the remaining Israeli hostages in Gaza. The Supreme Leader might want to rethink that declaration as well. First, the Israeli attack\u2014which was a response to Iran\u2019s missile attack on Israel, which was a response to Israel\u2019s assassination of Iranian agents and the leader of Hezbollah, which was a response to \u2026 you can trace this thread back for decades\u2014took out most of the air-defense systems guarding Iranian energy, nuclear, and other civil facilities. Even had Kamala Harris won the election, a strong Iranian attack would spur a devastating blow from Israel. (Biden, who pressured Netanyahu to make his recent attack \u201cproportional,\u201d warned Iran that this time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/11\/02\/us-warn-iran-attack-israel-nuclear-oil-sites\">he would not impose any restraints<\/a>.) But with Trump as president, Netanyahu can elevate his ambitions; Trump might even order the U.S. Air Force to help. (Our planes have the range, and a sufficient supply of bunker-buster bombs, to damage or destroy a lot of Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph slate-graf\" data-word-count=\"31\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cm368x9kd001a3b72fofmem1r@published\">Trump may think that Biden made America less secure and the world more violent\u2014and that only he, Trump, can restore peace and order.
