New measures aimed at fighting the heavy smog will affect more than 70 million people in four divisions of the province.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Lahore, home to 13 million people and the country\u2019s second-largest city, recorded an <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iqair.com\/pakistan\/punjab\/lahore\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Air Quality Index of over 1,000<\/a> on Sunday morning, according to IQAir, a Swiss air quality technology company. Anything above 301 on the index is considered <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/air-quality-index.html\" title=\"\">a hazardous situation<\/a> that can cause severe eye and throat irritation and serious heart and lung conditions. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers anything beyond 500 as off the charts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Sunday was the first time the index for Lahore exceeded 1,000,<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>prompting the authorities to close all primary schools for a week. On Wednesday, the city recorded a reading of 1,165.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Lahore regularly tops the list of the world\u2019s most polluted cities, according to IQAir, which last year ranked Pakistan among the four countries with the worst air pollution on earth. The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/openknowledge.worldbank.org\/server\/api\/core\/bitstreams\/2d1af64a-8d35-5946-a047-17dc143797ad\/content\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">World Bank<\/a> has said that air pollution shortens the average life expectancy of Pakistanis by 4.3 years and leads to economic losses equivalent to about 6.5 percent of the economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Tuesday, more than 900 people were admitted to hospitals with respiratory problems, Ms. Aurangzeb said, adding, \u201cIf you don\u2019t want to become one of them, for God\u2019s sake, stay at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Additional measures announced on Wednesday included advising residents to wear face masks in public spaces until the end of January. More schools, now up to 12th grade, were told to close and switch to online learning until Nov. 17.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Lahore, half of all workers have been directed to work from home, and the authorities urged residents to stay indoors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Officials have also cracked down on the use of cars, with the police in Punjab Province announcing on Tuesday that they had impounded 521 vehicles they said were excessively polluting the air.
