And we\u2019re going to make it seem like this is the finality of our civilization and this or that.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"bc804bb5-9e09-4c17-8654-a0a215a1b9f5\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.VideoYoutubeBlockElement\" class=\" dcr-173mewl\">\n<div data-component=\"youtube-embed\" class=\"dcr-13aa88h\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/XLiagIdA84c?wmode=opaque&amp;feature=oembed\" title=\"Jon Stewart\u2019s Election Night Takeaway | The Daily Show\" height=\"480\" width=\"854\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cWe\u2019re all going to have to wake up tomorrow morning and work like hell to move the world to the place that we\u2019d prefer it to be,\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd I just want to point out, just as a matter of perspective, that the lessons that our pundits take away from these results, that they will pronounce with certainty, will be wrong. And you have to remember that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">For evidence, he looked back on the punditry following several recent elections, starting with Barack Obama in 2008. \u201cI think we are moving to a post-racial America,\u201d said George Stephanopoulos at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cYeah, that lasted a day,\u201d Stewart quipped.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">In 2012, the lesson was, according to Bill O\u2019Reilly at Fox News, that \u201cthe GOP needs to send a powerful signal to Hispanic voters that the party respects them\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cAnd signal to the Hispanic community the GOP did,\u201d Stewart said before a clip of Trump in 2016, saying Mexico sends \u201cdrugs, crime and their rapists\u201d to the US.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"95555f7e-86f2-4e09-9c73-bc2b1f239998\" data-spacefinder-role=\"richLink\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement\" class=\" dcr-1your1i\"><gu-island name=\"RichLinkComponent\" priority=\"feature\" deferuntil=\"idle\" props=\"{&quot;richLinkIndex&quot;:10,&quot;element&quot;:{&quot;_type&quot;:&quot;model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.RichLinkBlockElement&quot;,&quot;prefix&quot;:&quot;Related: &quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Jimmy Kimmel on US election: \u2018It feels like the country is waiting to get results of a biopsy\u2019&quot;,&quot;elementId&quot;:&quot;95555f7e-86f2-4e09-9c73-bc2b1f239998&quot;,&quot;role&quot;:&quot;richLink&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/2024\/nov\/05\/jimmy-kimmel-election-trump-harris&quot;},&quot;ajaxUrl&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/api.nextgen.guardianapps.co.uk&quot;,&quot;format&quot;:{&quot;design&quot;:0,&quot;display&quot;:0,&quot;theme&quot;:3}}\"\/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cWhich apparently was the winning message!\u201d Stewart mused. \u201cAnd that taught Democrats in 2016 what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Stewart then played multiple clips of pundits saying Democrats were bound to find their next leader from \u201ca new generation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cNeed I say it?\u201d Stewart deadpanned before footage of Joe Biden accepting the Democratic nomination in 2020. \u201cAnd that turned out to be a winning message again! Which led to an insurrection. And the lesson from that was,\u201d according to more pundits in 2021, that Trump would leave the White House a \u201cpariah\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cMy point is this,\u201d said Stewart. He screamed bleeped-out curses, then got more cogent. \u201cThis isn\u2019t the end. I promise you, this is not the end,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd we have to regroup and we have to continue to fight and continue to work day in and day out to create the better society for our children, for this world, for this country that we know is possible.
