drowsiness during the day or a lack of enthusiasm for activities due to poor sleep habits may be more likely to develop <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7370775\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">motoric cognitive risk syndrome<\/a> (MCR), which can <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/26\/lifestyle\/neurosurgeon-reveals-10-simpleways-to-lower-dementia-risk\/\">lead to dementia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1063410\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a new study finds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur findings emphasize the need for screening for sleep issues,\u201d said study author Dr. Victoire Leroy of Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. \u201cThere\u2019s potential that people could get help with their sleep issues and had 445 dementia-free adults with an average age of 76 fill out a sleep questionnaire and walk on a treadmill at the start of the study and then annually for an average of three years.<\/p>\n<p>MCR patients tend to walk slowly and struggle with their memory. <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7370775\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">It\u2019s estimated<\/a> that 2% to 27%\u00a0of the global population have this condition.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Leroy\u2019s questionnaire asked how often the participants wake up in the middle of the night, how often they have trouble staying awake while driving and how much they struggle to complete tasks, among other questions.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that 177 participants met the definition for poor sleepers, while 268 were considered good sleepers. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Forty-two people had MCR at the start of the study, and another 36 developed it.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><button class=\"button button--modal-trigger\" aria-label=\"Open the image in a modal.\" daytime sleepiness and a lack of enthusiasm are more than three times more likely to develop MCR than people without those problems.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>The study authors say their work does not prove certain sleep-related woes cause MCR \u2014 it only shows an association.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore research needs to be done to look at the relationship between sleep issues and cognitive decline and the role played by motoric cognitive risk syndrome,\u201d Leroy said. \u201cWe also need studies to explain the mechanisms that link these sleep disturbances to motoric cognitive risk syndrome and cognitive decline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The findings were published Wednesday in the online issue of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.neurology.org\/\">Neurology<\/a>, the medical journal of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aan.com\/\">American Academy of Neurology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A limitation of the research \u2014 supported by the National Institute on Aging \u2014 was that participants shared their own sleep information, which may not have been an accurate representation.<\/p>\n<div
