But the question investors are asking is what that burgeoning relationship will mean for them in the years to come.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->Trump, who won in convincing fashion on Election Day, has been tied at the hip to Musk, who has backed Trump both in rhetoric and with big financial commitments.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->Musk, the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/billionaires\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:world's richest man;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">world&#8217;s richest man<\/a>, recently added donations totaling $43.6 million to America PAC, his GOP super-PAC in early October. It was only a couple of years ago, in 2022, when Trump denigrated Musk on Truth Social, the conservative rival social media platform to Musk\u2019s Twitter (now X).<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->\u201cWhen Elon Musk came to the White House asking me for help on all of his many subsidized projects, whether it\u2019s electric cars that don\u2019t drive long enough, driverless cars that crash, or rocketships to nowhere, without which subsidies he\u2019d be worthless, and telling me how he was a big Trump fan and Republican, I could have said, \u201cDrop to your knees and beg,\u201d and he would have done it,\u201d <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/108636743295734643\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Trump wrote;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Trump wrote<\/a>.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->This was in response to Musk saying that Trump was too old to run for president again. Musk had purchased Twitter earlier that year <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-10-29\/how-elon-musk-came-to-embrace-donald-trump-citizen-elon-podcast?sref=eeq6exxF\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:and invited Trump to return to the platform, along with many other figures who were banned;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">and invited Trump to return to the platform, along with many other figures who were banned<\/a> for offensive viewpoints.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->Musk is an environmentalist and believes humanity must move beyond fossil fuels in order to save the planet \u2014 and if that means people should buy Tesla&#8217;s electric vehicles, then he\u2019s all for it. Trump is an unabashed fossil fuel fan and has <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/trump-has-big-plans-for-climate-and-energy-policy-but-can-he-implement-them\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:big plans to open up drilling;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">big plans to open up drilling<\/a> and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ed4b352b-5c06-4f8d-9df7-1b1f9fecb269\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reverse emissions rules and subsidies for clean energy;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">reverse emissions rules and subsidies for clean energy<\/a>.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->But Musk\u2019s embrace of free speech, deregulation, and anti-woke policies pushed him closer to Trump and the GOP. He has also promised to reverse Biden&#8217;s EV policies upon a return to office.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->The Biden administration\u2019s signature climate law, the Inflation Reduction Act, introduced the $7,500 EV tax credit for consumer vehicles, including numerous others for commercial EVs and battery production, among other things.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->With Trump in the White House and a GOP-led Senate and perhaps House of Representatives, that massive boon for the EV industry and Tesla could be under threat.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->\u201cI\u2019m all for electric cars but you have to have all of the alternatives also,\u201d Trump said in an<a data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SquawkCNBC\/status\/1767170718041555053\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:interview;cpos:11;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"> interview <\/a>in March. \u201cFirst of all, they don\u2019t go far, they cost too much, and they\u2019re all going to be made in China,\u201d he said.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->\u201cYou can\u2019t just go to electric,&#8221; Trump said, adding that the grid isn&#8217;t up to the challenges of production and distribution.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->But Trump changed his tune as recently as August. \u201cI\u2019m for electric cars. I have to be, you know, because Elon endorsed me very strongly. &#8230; So I have no choice,\u201d Trump said during a rally.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->\u201c[Trump is] not necessarily a big supporter of the concept of a government-led transition to EVs,\u201d iSeeCars analyst Karl Brauer told Yahoo Finance. \u201cSo it&#8217;s interesting to see that people feel like Elon&#8217;s relationship with Donald Trump will overcome a potential shift in policy because I do think the EPA regulations and expectations for electric vehicle sales and market share are not realistic.\u201c<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->Brauer believes the US will reassess and likely roll back stringent EPA emissions requirements and federal EV tax credits, which would be a negative for EV companies, including Tesla.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->But, given Tesla&#8217;s competitive advantages in the EV space, this could actually be a positive for the company.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->&#8220;Tesla has the scale and scope that is unmatched in the EV industry, and this dynamic could give Musk and Tesla a clear competitive advantage in a non-EV subsidy environment, coupled by likely higher China tariffs that would continue to push away cheaper Chinese EV players (BYD, Nio, etc.) from flooding the US market over the coming years,&#8221; Wedbush\u2019s Dan Ives wrote in a note on Wednesday.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->&#8220;We believe a Trump win could add $40-$50 per share to Tesla&#8217;s stock,&#8221; Ives added, noting that the company could exceed $1 trillion in market cap &#8220;if autonomous\/FSD is accelerated starting in 2025.&#8221;<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->Indeed, Tesla\u2019s robotaxi ambitions, though nascent and in the early testing phase, could be supercharged by a Trump White House.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->\u201cWe believe Trump&#8217;s victory will help expedite regulatory approval of the company&#8217;s autonomous driving technology,\u201d CFRA\u2019s Garrett Nelson wrote on Wednesday.<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<figure class=\"yf-8xybrv\">\n<div class=\"image-container yf-24rror loader\" style=\"--max-height: 539px;\">\n<div class=\"image-wrapper yf-24rror\" style=\"--aspect-ratio: 960 \/ 539; --img-max-width: 960px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/ywAAAAAAQABAAACAUwAOw==\" alt=\"Tesla CEO and X owner Elon Musk rides in Tesla's robotaxi at an unveilling event in Los Angeles, California, U.S. October 10, 2024 in this still image taken from video. More so than the previous administration? Probably,&#8221; Brauer said. &#8220;I don&#8217;t think the previous administration was a glowing fan of Elon, so he may be able to get some help and have an ally in the White House to help him get to that next level beyond electric vehicle sales, and maybe that&#8217;s among the things that investors are hoping for.\u201d<!-- HTML_TAG_END --><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><!-- HTML_TAG_START -->Tesla sees robotaxi testing continuing in 2025 and a rollout as early as 2026.
