Can They Stay That Way?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As Sean Combs faces numerous anonymous accusers in both civil and criminal court who say he sexually abused them, his lawyers have argued that such anonymity is an unfair impediment to his defense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In more than half of the 27 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/sean-combs-diddy-lawsuits-accusations.html\" title=\"\">sexual abuse civil suits<\/a> against the music mogul, the plaintiffs filed under the pseudonyms Jane Doe or John Doe, drawing opposition from Mr. Combs\u2019s lawyers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Similarly, in his criminal case, where he has been <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/17\/arts\/music\/sean-combs-diddy-indicted.html\" title=\"\">charged with racketeering and sex trafficking<\/a>, the defense has argued that prosecutors should have to reveal the names of the accusers who are part of their case. The only one listed in the indictment was identified as \u201cVictim 1,\u201d though prosecutors say there are multiple.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWithout clarity from the government,\u201d his lawyers wrote in a letter to the presiding judge, \u201cMr. Combs has no way of knowing which allegations the government is relying on for purposes of the indictment.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Sexual assault accusers have long sought anonymity in the courts and in the media. The flood of complaints during the #MeToo movement ushered in a much broader societal understanding of their fears of retribution and social stigmatization, and protocols in the American media that withhold accusers\u2019 names became even more entrenched \u2014 a commitment illustrated last month when the country superstar Garth Brooks identified <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/09\/arts\/music\/garth-brooks-names-rape-accuser.html\" title=\"\">an anonymous accuser<\/a> in court papers.
