(Video from December 2022)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><strong>TOWNSEND, Tenn. <\/strong>\u2013 A spider known for its unique coloring and large size has been spotted twice recently in Great Smoky Mountains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/national-parks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Park<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The Joro Spider, known scientifically as <i>Trichonephila clavata, <\/i>has been reported in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S.<\/a> since 2014, when the spider was first found in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/georgia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Georgia<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">According to officials from the National Park Service, the spider was first seen in the park on Oct. 17, and again more recently. Both sightings were reported in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/grsm\/planyourvisit\/cadescove.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cades Cove<\/a>, a scenic valley in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/tennessee\/townsend\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Townsend<\/a>, Tennessee, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/grsm\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Great Smoky Mountains National Park<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The spiders are native to East <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/asia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Asia<\/a>, NAISMA said, and in the U.S. they have been found in Georgia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/south-carolina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Carolina<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/tennessee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tennessee<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/north-carolina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Carolina<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/maryland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Maryland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The spider species is quite large, with adult female spiders reaching an average of 3 inches across, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/naisma.org\/2024\/07\/03\/the-joro-spider-thats-taking-the-world-by-storm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">North American Invasive Species Management Association (NAISMA)<\/a>. Female Joro Spiders are distinctive, with bright yellow bodies covered in horizontal grayish-blue colored stripes. The female spiders also have black and yellow striped legs. The male spiders also remain a brown color.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The spiders are often reported to be seen parachuting, officially called &#8220;ballooning.&#8221; It&#8217;s an act where spiders are carried by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/wind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wind<\/a> on their silk, NAISMA said. However, the ecological impacts on the spider are still being researched.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">NPS officials said they are currently assessing the presence of Joro Spiders within Great Smoky Mountains National Park to determine if management actions are needed.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The park recently sustained damage during Hurricane <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/helene\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Helene<\/a> in late September. The park saw impacts such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/flood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flooding<\/a>, downed trees, damaged power lines and hazardous trail conditions, according to the NPS. Portions of the national park closed while NPS surveyed and cleaned up the damage. Some trails remain closed due to storm damage.
