{"id":123353,"date":"2024-11-08T05:37:01","date_gmt":"2024-11-07T22:37:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=123353"},"modified":"2024-11-08T05:37:01","modified_gmt":"2024-11-07T22:37:01","slug":"nfl-coach-of-the-year-mvp-and-biggest-surprises-and-disappointments-at-midseason","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=123353","title":{"rendered":"NFL Coach of the Year, MVP and biggest surprises (and disappointments) at midseason"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>With a 7-2 record, the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"62\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/commanders\/\">Washington Commanders<\/a> have already exceeded the full-season win total oddsmakers set for them entering the 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5903722\/2024\/11\/07\/nfl-toughest-schedules-halfway-point-2024-season\/\">NFL<\/a> season.<\/p>\n<p>Their head coach (Dan Quinn), offensive coordinator (Kliff Kingsbury) and rookie quarterback (<a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"1jl1WJMb0rLnuGbu\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/jayden-daniels-1jl1WJMb0rLnuGbu\/\">Jayden Daniels<\/a>) all deserve consideration for midseason honors as we assess the season near its midpoint. But how to divide the credit? That\u2019s the fun and illuminating part as I run through my midseason ballot for Coach of the Year, MVP, Comeback Player of the Year, top coordinators, top rookies, biggest surprises, disappointments and more.<\/p>\n<h3>1. The Minnesota Vikings\u2019 Kevin O\u2019Connell is the midseason choice for Coach of the Year.<\/h3>\n<p>Andy Reid and Bill Belichick are arguably the greatest coaches of this century. Reid last won Coach of the Year in 2002. His team has an 8-0 record this season and is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5873776\/2024\/10\/28\/patrick-mahomes-chiefs-andy-reid-pick-six\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">winning with a different formula<\/a>, but we are so conditioned to his success, and the resourcefulness of <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"WWwiw0IQD5ozgrHf\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/patrick-mahomes-WWwiw0IQD5ozgrHf\/\">Patrick Mahomes<\/a>, that Reid\u2019s name scarcely even arises for the award. He might be above it. Belichick was a three-time winner from 2003 to 2010, but never thereafter.<\/p>\n<p>We tend to focus on coaches perceived to be doing more with less in a given season.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Connell fits that profile. He\u2019s my choice because the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"48\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/vikings\/\">Vikings<\/a> have nearly matched their preseason Vegas win total after losing their starting quarterback to a season-ending injury during preseason. The sortable table below shows Minnesota ranking second to Washington in actual wins as a percentage of full-season Vegas totals.<\/p>\n<p>The Vikings have won primarily with defense, but O\u2019Connell has gotten more than expected from a <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"3Nxpcb3Oda9xKjNY\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/sam-darnold-3Nxpcb3Oda9xKjNY\/\">Sam Darnold<\/a>-quarterbacked offense. Darnold ranks second to <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"8vrQt8GE4bS4X4Xa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/lamar-jackson-8vrQt8GE4bS4X4Xa\/\">Lamar Jackson<\/a> and just ahead of <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"WhulkiCmzKfAaXU7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/jared-goff-WhulkiCmzKfAaXU7\/\">Jared Goff<\/a> in explosive pass rate, with 22.3 percent of his passes gaining more than 15 yards (excluding situations when field position made gaining that many yards impossible).<\/p>\n<p>Also strongly considered: <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"42\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/packers\/\">Green Bay<\/a>\u2019s Matt LaFleur, for winning without his starting quarterback in a reimagined style while developing the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/\">NFL<\/a>\u2019s youngest roster and improving, at least so far, on defense with the new coordinator LaFleur hired; the Los Angeles Chargers\u2019 Jim Harbaugh, for instantly remaking his new team in his image; the Detroit Lions\u2019 Dan Campbell, for winning in a complementary fashion and in his vision for style of play.<\/p>\n<h3>2. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/live-blogs\/bengals-vs-ravens-live-score-updates-nfl-tnf-result\/jEuQhb4fIIgi\/\">Lamar Jackson<\/a> is my midseason MVP. Here\u2019s what is different about his game.<\/h3>\n<p>Jackson has 20 touchdown passes with two interceptions for the NFL\u2019s top offense by total EPA, EPA per play and success rate. He leads the league in passer rating (120.7), EPA per pass play (0.35), quarterback EPA on passes\/rushes (107.9) and explosive pass rate (23.3 percent).<\/p>\n<p>Much more than in the past, the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"33\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/ravens\/\">Ravens<\/a> (6-3) are winning because of their highly rated offense and in spite of their defense\/special teams, which rank 30th in combined EPA. This makes Jackson\u2019s contributions more valuable to team success.<\/p>\n<p>The chart below shows EPA per game on pass plays and rushes\/scrambles for Jackson, Washington\u2019s Daniels, the Buffalo Bills\u2019 <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"9zLTUSPpy6pFa4xs\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/josh-allen-9zLTUSPpy6pFa4xs\/\">Josh Allen<\/a> and <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"41\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/lions\/\">Detroit<\/a>\u2019s Goff. I\u2019ve also included the full-season averages for Jackson when he won the award in 2023 and the 10 MVP quarterbacks before that. Jackson\u2019s production this season beats all of them and nearly quadruples his pace from 2023 when there was no clear-cut MVP from a statistical standpoint.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5903500\/2024\/11\/07\/nfl-awards-midseason-mvp-surprises\/visualisation\/20172376?1681084\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/20172376\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"chart visualization\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Jackson has enjoyed hot streaks and big seasons previously as a two-time MVP. In looking to see what might be different this year, and whether it might help him sustain success in the playoffs, one area stood out as a possibility.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson is taking fewer sacks when opposing defenses blitz. He has taken only four sacks on 96 pass plays (4.3 percent) against the blitz this season, down from 18 sacks in 185 such plays (10.3 percent) last season. His explosive pass rate against the blitz (25 percent) is a career high.<\/p>\n<p>Could Jackson be processing the game more efficiently as a veteran player in his second season in a new offense? That is possible. He did put up similarly impressive numbers against the blitz during his 2019 MVP season: 24 touchdowns, two interceptions and nine sacks in 138 pass plays (6.8 percent). That season and this one align much more than his 2023 MVP season.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5900549\/2024\/11\/05\/nfl-mvp-odds-week-10-josh-allen-lamar-jackson\/\" class=\"go-deeper\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"go-deeper\">\n<div class=\"go-deeper-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/athletic\/uploads\/wp\/2024\/11\/05120209\/GettyImages-2182691937-1024x683.jpg?width=128&amp;height=128&amp;fit=cover&amp;auto=webp\" class=\"go-deeper\" alt=\"go-deeper\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-label\">GO DEEPER<\/p>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-title\">NFL MVP odds: Allen, Jackson continue to battle for top spot<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>3. <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"56\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/chargers\/\">Los Angeles Chargers<\/a> defensive coordinator Jesse Minter is a clear choice for top defensive assistant.<\/h3>\n<p>Lots of good candidates here. Brian Flores of the Vikings and Vance Joseph of the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"40\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/broncos\/\">Denver Broncos<\/a> deserve mention. <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"54\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/eagles\/\">Philadelphia<\/a>\u2019s Vic Fangio will be one to watch as the Eagles\u2019 season progresses. The Lions\u2019 defense has made a jump under Aaron Glenn, while the Packers have gotten good results so far with Jeff Hafley as defensive coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>Minter stands out because he has instantly driven the NFL\u2019s largest year-over-year defensive reversal, turning the 28th-ranked defense by EPA per play \u2014 both last season and over the previous four \u2014 into the No. 1 unit this season through Week 9. Over the previous three seasons, the Chargers ranked no higher than 25th after eight games or through a full season, despite having a defensive play-calling head coach in Brandon Staley.<\/p>\n<p>From a statistical standpoint, it\u2019s as though Minter packed up the Ravens\u2019 defense, which he helped coach from 2017 to 2020 before serving as coordinator at Vanderbilt and Michigan, and brought it to Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>The table below shows the Chargers\u2019 defense becoming 11.4 EPA per game better this season, best in the league, while the Ravens\u2019 defense is 11.7 EPA per game worse, the largest year-over-year decline.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is a clear choice for top offensive assistant.<\/h3>\n<p>Daniels deserves plenty of the credit for Washington\u2019s year-over-year improvement on offense, but the way Kingsbury has deployed him stands out. He has taken an overly pass-oriented offense and made it a balanced one, with spectacular results.<\/p>\n<p>The table below shows the Commanders\u2019 offense improving by 16 EPA per game, by far the biggest year-over-year jump.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s notable seeing the <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"52\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/jets\/\">New York Jets<\/a> second on that list during a season in which their offensive coordinator, Nathaniel Hackett, was replaced by Todd Downing (Aaron Rodgers\u2019 presence is a big part of that, even with his inconsistency). But the Jets rank 506th out of 798 teams since 2000 in drive scoring rate (31.3 percent). The Commanders rank first on that list with a 60.7 percent rate. The next team was the 2018 <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"46\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/chiefs\/\">Chiefs<\/a> at 52.9 percent.<\/p>\n<p>There are some other strong candidates. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers\u2019 Liam Coen and the Ravens\u2019 Todd Monken are both leading offenses that were solid last season, and significantly better in 2024. The Lions\u2019 Ben Johnson has one of two offenses averaging nearly 31 points per game (Baltimore\u2019s is the other). <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"32\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/falcons\/\">Atlanta<\/a>\u2019s Zac Robinson has teamed with quarterback <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"iPIYwkTzxrquSQo2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/kirk-cousins-iPIYwkTzxrquSQo2\/\">Kirk Cousins<\/a> to turn around the Falcons\u2019 offense. Kingsbury stands apart for the historic production with a rookie quarterback.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"embedPlayer\" style=\"border: 0px; border-radius: 12px; width: 100%; height: 175px; max-width: 660px;\" title=\"Media player\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/trade-deadline-recap-zadarius-smith-to-the-lions\/id1528622068?i=1000675873733&amp;itscg=30200&amp;itsct=podcast_box_player&amp;ls=1&amp;mttnsubad=1000675873733&amp;theme=auto\" width=\"100%\" height=\"175\" sandbox=\"allow-forms allow-popups allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>5. There is no player in the NFL quite like my choice for Defensive Player of the Year.<\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019ll run through five individual player awards here, starting on the defensive side.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Defensive Player of the Year:<\/strong> <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"PPOxfW3uBslMjuk9\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/dexter-lawrence-ii-PPOxfW3uBslMjuk9\/\">Dexter Lawrence II<\/a>, <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"51\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/giants\/\">New York Giants<\/a>. Lawrence is a 6-foot-4, 340-pound nose tackle with nine sacks in nine games, twice his full-season total from 2023 when he finished ninth in voting for the award.<\/p>\n<p>Although defensive tackles won three of the first four DPOY awards (introduced in 1971), including \u201cMean\u201d Joe Greene twice in the early 1970s, none fit Lawrence\u2019s profile from a size standpoint. <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"m5jpa2RYa81TrSQQ\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/aaron-donald-m5jpa2RYa81TrSQQ\/\">Aaron Donald<\/a> (280 pounds) is the only defensive tackle to win the award since 2000. Cortez Kennedy, Dana Stubblefield and Warren Sapp won it in the 1990s, all while weighing in the lower 300s.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Offensive Player of the Year: <\/strong><a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"oJQx7e7sJBwSTdBo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/derrick-henry-oJQx7e7sJBwSTdBo\/\">Derrick Henry<\/a>, Ravens. Henry is averaging 6.3 yards per carry and has a league-leading 1,052 yards rushing, putting him on pace for 1,987 yards at age 30. That would break Tiki Barber\u2019s NFL single-season record for rushing yards in a season at age 30 or older. Barber rushed for 1,860 yards in a 16-game 2005 season, good for a 116.3 average per game (Henry\u2019s average is 116.9).<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year:<\/strong> Daniels, Commanders. Daniels\u2019 performance as a high-producing quarterback for a winning team differentiates him from <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"53\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/raiders\/\">Las Vegas Raiders<\/a> tight end <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"Nucw2KOX0WQ15lqu\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/brock-bowers-Nucw2KOX0WQ15lqu\/\">Brock Bowers<\/a>, Giants receiver <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"R6o9RQ6D5FTIKBcv\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/malik-nabers-R6o9RQ6D5FTIKBcv\/\">Malik Nabers<\/a> and <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"45\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/jaguars\/\">Jacksonville Jaguars<\/a> receiver <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"xsoTkJbRclcZk9PO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/brian-thomas-jr-xsoTkJbRclcZk9PO\/\">Brian Thomas Jr.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Defensive Rookie of the Year:<\/strong> <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"UBYZosvLkLCAKsSR\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/jared-verse-UBYZosvLkLCAKsSR\/\">Jared Verse<\/a>, <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"59\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/team\/rams\/\">Los Angeles Rams<\/a>. Verse leads all rookies in sacks (3 1\/2), pressures (39) and tackles for loss that were not sacks (six). In addition to his 33 tackles, Verse also has 24 plays when he was the first defender to make contact with a ball carrier. That is nine more than any other rookie (teammate <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"wBE3V0KHSy7ZusMk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/braden-fiske-wBE3V0KHSy7ZusMk\/\">Braden Fiske<\/a> is second in this category as well as in sacks and pressures among rookies).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5899532\/2024\/11\/06\/nfl-all-rookie-midseason-jayden-daniels-jared-verse\/\" class=\"go-deeper\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"go-deeper\">\n<div class=\"go-deeper-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/athletic\/uploads\/wp\/2024\/11\/06021018\/1006_MidSeason_AllRookieTeam.png?width=128&amp;height=128&amp;fit=cover&amp;auto=webp\" class=\"go-deeper\" alt=\"go-deeper\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-label\">GO DEEPER<\/p>\n<p class=\"go-deeper-title\">Which 2024 draft picks are thriving? Our NFL midseason All-Rookie team<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Comeback Player of the Year: <\/strong>Kirk Cousins, Falcons. Cousins beats out Rodgers and <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"MHPQIoyRCSO0fiiE\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/nfl\/player\/joe-burrow-MHPQIoyRCSO0fiiE\/\">Joe Burrow<\/a> for different reasons. He\u2019s ahead of Rodgers, who is also returning from a torn Achilles tendon because he has produced more consistently this season. He\u2019s ahead of Burrow because he\u2019s older and returning from a more serious injury.<\/p>\n<h3>6.
