It turns out, Gen Z, or at least some swaths of the generation, showed up for Trump on Election Day, helping cement his strong win over Democratic opponent Kamala Harris.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Last election, President Joe Biden beat Trump by 11% among men aged under 30. This time around, Trump edged out Harris by 2 points, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/yes-trump-improved-young-men-drew-young-women-rcna179019\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/yes-trump-improved-young-men-drew-young-women-rcna179019\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC News<\/a> exit polling. Trump also carries more favor when it comes to young women, as Biden\u2019s 35-point lead shifted to only 24 points for Harris.<\/p>\n<p>Gen Z leaning Trump wasn\u2019t anticipated, despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americansurveycenter.org\/newsletter\/are-young-men-becoming-conservative\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.americansurveycenter.org\/newsletter\/are-young-men-becoming-conservative\/\" rel=\"noopener\">young men\u2019s<\/a> turn to conservatism being well-documented. Young registered voters reported to favor Harris (53%) over Trump (33%) respectively, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/iop.harvard.edu\/youth-poll\/latest-poll\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/iop.harvard.edu\/youth-poll\/latest-poll\" rel=\"noopener\">poll<\/a> from Harvard Kennedy School of more than 2,000 undergraduate students. Her lead diminished to 9 points in key swing states.<\/p>\n<p>On Election Day, a different reality for young voters emerged.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some Gen Zers likely fibbed about their vote<\/h2>\n<p>During a divisive election, it appears as if some voters held their cards close to their chests. Almost a quarter (23%) of Americans reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/30\/gen-z-lies-about-who-theyre-voting-for\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/30\/gen-z-lies-about-who-theyre-voting-for\/\" rel=\"noopener\">lied<\/a> to someone close to them about who they were voting for, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/10\/30\/election-gen-z-voting-lies\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/10\/30\/election-gen-z-voting-lies\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Axios<\/em><\/a> poll of more 1,800 registered voters, conducted by the Harris Poll.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The younger generations were most likely to lie, at 48% of Gen Zers and 38% of millennials compared to just 17% of Gen Xers and 6% of baby boomers. And men were more likely to lie than women, at 30% and 17%, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>While it was unclear from the poll who they were lying to, it now appears that some Gen Z men backed Trump in silence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps people are fibbing so much because their generation is splintered. Men in the U.S., Germany, and South Korea are tilting increasingly conservative, according to Gallup data as covered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/29fd9b5c-2f35-41bf-9d4c-994db4e12998\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/29fd9b5c-2f35-41bf-9d4c-994db4e12998\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Financial Times<\/em><\/a>. In the same countries, women are leaning more liberal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump met some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/01\/us\/politics\/donald-trump-young-men.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/01\/us\/politics\/donald-trump-young-men.html\" rel=\"noopener\">young men<\/a> where they were at, speaking on Joe Rogan\u2019s podcast and snagging endorsements from YouTubers like Jake Paul and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/politics-news\/trump-wins-influencer-election-1236055439\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/politics-news\/trump-wins-influencer-election-1236055439\/\" rel=\"noopener\">other influencers<\/a> who curry favor with his intended audience. \u201cWhat [Trump] is doing is sitting down and doing a podcast with some podcaster, and that\u2019s where he has made gains in this election,\u201d Dan Pfeiffer, former senior adviser to President Barack Obama, told <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/24\/dan-pfeiffer-kamala-harris-gen-z-donald-trump-joe-rogan\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/24\/dan-pfeiffer-kamala-harris-gen-z-donald-trump-joe-rogan\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Fortune\u2019s<\/em><\/a> Jane Thier.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also attempted to soften his image on these shows. \u201cThey think of Trump as an anti-hero and not a villain. \u2026 I think it\u2019s less about policy and much more about personality,\u201d John Della Volpe, director of polling at the Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/09\/28\/gen-z-men-conservative-poll\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/09\/28\/gen-z-men-conservative-poll\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Axios<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trump capitalized on disillusionment and economic fatigue<\/h2>\n<p>Young people across political leanings are disillusioned with their leaders. Gen Zers want politicians to become more involved in critical issues, like climate change, economic inequality, and democracy\u2019s future. And they report feeling fatalistic about the government\u2019s failure to do so, per <a href=\"https:\/\/news.berkeley.edu\/2024\/06\/26\/young-voters-have-growing-power-but-broken-politics-leave-them-fatalistic-studies-find\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/news.berkeley.edu\/2024\/06\/26\/young-voters-have-growing-power-but-broken-politics-leave-them-fatalistic-studies-find\/\" rel=\"noopener\">two studies<\/a> from UC Berkeley researchers.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a given that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2024-elections\/383208\/donald-trump-victory-kamala-harris-global-trend-incumbents\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2024-elections\/383208\/donald-trump-victory-kamala-harris-global-trend-incumbents\" rel=\"noopener\">incumbent party<\/a> often struggles to win, when so many people feel unsatisfied with the current reality. But Trump was able to capitalize on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/trumps-return-power-fueled-by-hispanic-working-class-voter-support-2024-11-06\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/trumps-return-power-fueled-by-hispanic-working-class-voter-support-2024-11-06\/\" rel=\"noopener\">working-class<\/a> vote this cycle. Most voters felt pessimistic about the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/11\/06\/trump-harris-economy-voters-hispanic-prices-consumers-election-negative\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/11\/06\/trump-harris-economy-voters-hispanic-prices-consumers-election-negative\/\" rel=\"noopener\">economy<\/a> under Biden and Harris, with 64% rating it \u201cnot good\u201d or \u201cpoor,\u201d according to exit polls. Increasingly burdened by the cost of housing and groceries, voters sought an alternative to the current administration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working-class people would find that the working class has abandoned them,\u201d Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who campaigned for Harris, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/11\/06\/bernie-sanders-donald-trump-kamala-harris-2024-election-results-democratic-party-bandoned-working-cmiddle-class\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/11\/06\/bernie-sanders-donald-trump-kamala-harris-2024-election-results-democratic-party-bandoned-working-cmiddle-class\/\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cWhile the Democratic leadership defends the status quo, the American people are angry and want change.
