It was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/73\/wr\/mm7344a3.htm?s_cid=mm7344a3_w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published Thursday<\/a> in the CDC\u2019s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm37w93m200012e6bbdbwmjl5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In response to the findings, the agency is expanding its recommendations for testing and treatment of workers on affected farms.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm37rpw8b00043b6mcz6pplun@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Previously, the CDC recommended testing of only those workers who had symptoms after exposure to infected cows. Now, officials say all workers on farms with infected cows should be tested, even if they don\u2019t have symptoms.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm37rpw8b00053b6mg5og2mbu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The CDC is also recommending that workers without symptoms receive the antiviral medication Tamiflu if they\u2019ve had a high-risk exposure to infected animals when they weren\u2019t wearing adequate personal protective equipment. An example of a high-risk exposure would be a splash of raw cow\u2019s milk to the face, CDC Principal Deputy Director Dr. Nirav Shah said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm37syqby00063b6mk51qdd6h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Previously, only workers with symptoms were offered Tamiflu.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm37rpw8b00063b6mbue2ujrh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Every infection gives the virus an opportunity to change and become more dangerous, so the expanded recommendations are designed to protect workers from the possibility of severe illness if they catch the virus and to limit its spread.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm37rpw8b00073b6mpby4ibeq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSimply put, the less room we give this virus to run, the fewer chances it has to cause harm or to change,\u201d Shah said. \u201cAnd the best way to limit the virus\u2019s room to run is to test, identify, treat and isolate as many cases as possible in humans and as quickly as possible.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm37syzo300083b6mic15rcv7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The farm workers who participated in the study were asked about their exposures, any symptoms and their use of personal protective equipment, known as PPE. Their blood was also tested for signs of<strong> <\/strong>antibodies, immune proteins that are left behind after the body fights off an infection.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm37rpw8b00093b6mgwip1td6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Of 115 people who were tested, eight were positive for antibodies, suggesting that they\u2019d been infected on the job. Only four remembered having any symptoms, however, suggesting that their illnesses may have been very mild. They reported eye redness or conjunctivitis, fever, runny nose, sore throat, sneezing and diarrhea.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm37rpw8b000a3b6mlh3juo17@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            All of the workers reported cleaning the milking parlor, the room where cows are milked. Most people who had evidence of infection also said they had milked the cows. None wore the recommended PPE, and only one said they knew that the cows they were working with were infected with H5N1.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm37wi75900072e6blbf18wuq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            All eight workers who tested positive for past infections spoke Spanish.  The CDC\u2019s recommendations stress increasing education for workers on farms, including culturally appropriate guidance in their native languages.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm37rpw8b000b3b6mfl5ouadz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There have been 46 human cases of H5N1 reported in the United States this year. The eight workers identified in the new study will not be added to the case count, officials said. A case must be detected while an infection is active to be included in the total.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm37rpw8b000c3b6m8x0wtozd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey are really looking retrospectively, helping us learn, but they\u2019re not going to be called cases,\u201d said Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, director of the CDC\u2019s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm37rpw8b000d3b6mv6yuxwwa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The CDC said the findings of the study \u2014 including limited use of PPE by dairy workers and lack of awareness of the infection in cattle \u2014 point to the need for more outreach to this vulnerable group.\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/factbox\/instances\/cm37rqd89000n3b6m0ycyxipn@published\" data-component-name=\"factbox\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" class=\"factbox_inline-small factbox_inline-small__\">\n<h3 class=\"factbox_inline-small__title\" data-editable=\"title\">\n    Get CNN Health&#8217;s weekly newsletter<br \/>\n  <\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm37rpw8b000e3b6mjv84sn1s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThese were farms with known infected cows,\u201d Daskalakis said. \u201cSo it was really about the fact that they didn\u2019t have the awareness that they had any sick cows that they were working with, even though they were in environments where sick cows were known.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm37rpw8b000f3b6mb5yvl9kn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/bird-flu\/situation-summary\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDC has said that it is working closely with states<\/a> and local health officials as it continues to monitor the H5 bird flu situation and that the current risk to the public remains low.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm37rpw8b000g3b6mexqhf8rw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe focus is going to be on containing the spread of infection in cows, because that is believed to be the best way to address controlling spread to farm workers,\u201d Lori Tremmel Freeman, chief executive officer for the National Association of County and City Health Officials, said Thursday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm37rpw8b000h3b6mbhypp0uw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis disease is interesting because the more we learn, the more questions come up.
