We are a house divided on a fault line of decency. Trump\u2019s venality, his bigotry and racism, his fondness for dictators, and his disregard of truth were on flamboyant display for American voters \u2014 with his former top general even decrying Trump as \u201cfascist to the core.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tCampaigning for the White House, Trump was a peacock with fetid feathers. And others flocked with him: Ostentatious oligarch Elon Musk made a mockery of our democratic system by seeking to buy off voters with small checks and million dollar prizes. \u201cComedian\u201d Tony Hinchcliffe was there \u2014 making 1950s jokes about blacks eating watermelons, Jews being tight with money, and Latinos making too many babies, while casually blasting Puerto Rico as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/trump-tony-hinchcliffe-racist-comedian-rally-new-york-puerto-rico-latinos-1235144502\/\">a swirling island of garbage<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tTrump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/if-trump-wins-2024-election-1235096091\/\">openly touted his dictatorial<\/a> aims and his plans for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/maddowblog\/deportations-trump-expects-bloody-story-second-term-rcna170250\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cbloody\u201d<\/a> mass deportation \u2014 even as he courted white supremacists with a blood libel against Haitians and spouted eliminationist language about Congolese refugees being a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/trump-fascist-talk-bloodbath-vermin-dictator-1234992957\/\">pestilence<\/a>. And more than half of American voters didn\u2019t recoil. Whether they relished in Trump\u2019s vicious spectacle or simply abided it, they did not turn away. They used their ballots to punch a ticket for Trump \u2014 with his dozens of felonies and a sexual abuse adjudication \u2014 to return to power, and to absolve him of the consequences of his Jan. 6 coup attempt.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn his victory speech early Wednesday morning, standing before a wall of red-white-and-blue banners, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/donald-trump-defeats-kamala-harris-2024-presidential-election-1235154685\/\">cast his win as divine will<\/a>: \u201cMany people have told me that God spared my life for a reason,\u201d he said: \u201cNow we\u2019re going to fulfill that mission.\u201d Never has the old saw, \u201cwhen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/fascism\/\" id=\"auto-tag_fascism\" data-tag=\"fascism\">fascism<\/a> comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/america\/\" id=\"auto-tag_america\" data-tag=\"america\">America<\/a>, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross,\u201d seemed more prescient.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"deflating-their-confidence\" class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\t<strong>Deflating Their Confidence<\/strong>\t<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIn advance of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/2024-election\/\" id=\"auto-tag_2024-election\" data-tag=\"2024-election\">2024 election<\/a>, <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> interviewed experts in authoritarianism, fascism, and presidential power. They offered advice for resisting what is coming, but offered few assurances that the damage created by installing an American authoritarian \u2014 who is now effectively unchecked by criminal law \u2014 will be quickly or easily reversed.<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tTimothy Snyder is a Yale professor of totalitarian European history and author of <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books\/about\/On_Tyranny.html?id=3z7cDQAAQBAJ&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=kp_read_button&amp;hl=en&amp;newbks=1&amp;newbks_redir=0#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century<\/em><\/a>. Published in 2017, it gave shape to popular resistance of the first Trump term. \u201cYou can\u2019t despair,\u201d he tells <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>. \u201cBecause that\u2019s what they want. They want you to think that it\u2019s hopeless. It\u2019s never hopeless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSnyder\u2019s first rule in <em>On Tyranny<\/em> is \u201cdon\u2019t obey in advance.\u201d He emphasizes that Americans opposed to Trump\u2019s designs should take stock, and action, now. \u201cThe period of November, December, January, becomes very important,\u201d he says, and \u201cnot just for ordinary citizens,\u201d but for people entrusted with providing checks on executive power. Snyder issues a clarion call to members of the judiciary: \u201cThere\u2019s going to be a lot of cases really quickly, in which the only thing that\u2019s going to stop some kind of dreadful federal act of violence is going to be a judge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFor normal people, Snyder insists the key is \u201cto get out in protest\u201d \u2014 now and through the inauguration. Launching tear gas at Black Lives Matter protesters looked different on TV when the feds were brutalizing a wall of white mothers in gold shirts, locking arms at the front of the crowd. \u201cIt\u2019s about corporeal politics,\u201d Snyder says. \u201cGetting your body out where there are other bodies \u2014 with people who are maybe not like you or maybe less privileged than you.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"seeing-the-threat-clearly\" class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\t<strong>Seeing the Threat Clearly<\/strong>\t<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tExperts in authoritarianism insist that Trump\u2019s dictatorial threats need to be taken with gravity, because he\u2019s already done \u201cthings that autocrats do,\u201d says Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a history professor at New York University who is an expert in Italian fascism and the author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Strongmen-Mussolini-Present-Ruth-Ben-Ghiat-ebook\/dp\/B08BVZMDWW?ref_=ast_author_mpb&amp;asc_source=web&amp;asc_campaign=web&amp;asc_refurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rollingstone.com%2Fpolitics%2Fpolitics-features%2Ftrump-america-fascism-authoritarianism-resist-election-2024-1235157764%2F\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present<\/em>.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cHe has been able to domesticate a very old, storied party, and truly make it his personal tool,\u201d she tells <em>Rolling Stone.<\/em> \u201cHe instigated a violent coup attempt,\u201d and \u2014 instead of \u201chaving to go into exile or going to prison, like in Peru\u201d \u2014 he \u201cmanaged to paint it as a positive thing\u201d or to make \u201ca lot of Americans shrug their shoulders at it.\u201d These are \u201cpreconditions for autocracy,\u201d she insists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tTrump may have a \u201chighly problematic, decompensating personality,\u201d Ben-Ghiat adds, \u201cbut the guy is a master propagandist,\u201d who has used those skills in a campaign against the American system of checks and balances. \u201cHe\u2019s taken people step by step \u2026 for almost a decade now to view democracy as an inferior system \u2014 a system of crime and anarchy, weak government \u2026 and to see versions of authoritarian rule, with him at the head, as preferable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBen-Ghiat warns that Project 2025, the conservative policy and personnel program, is the roadmap \u201cto finish the job\u201d Trump started in his first term. The intent is to \u201cdestroy the governing structures and norms of liberal democracy through mass purges of civil servants who are not loyalists \u2014 and create something else. And that something else is autocracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tJason Stanley is Yale professor and author of <em>How Fascism Works<\/em>. He says Trump is pursuing a well-worn playbook. \u201cHe\u2019s going to replace the civil service with Trump loyalists.\u201d The next thing \u201cautocrats do is go after the courts, the press, and the universities.\u201d Many of our compatriots have grown up with a false confidence that the United States is immune from this kind of democratic corrosion. \u201cAmericans have to grow up,\u201d Stanley says. \u201cA lot of people live under these situations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tProject 2025 will take time to implement. Sen. Bernie Sanders warns <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> to watch out for Trump\u2019s use of national \u201cemergencies\u201d to produce a power grab, emboldened by allied partisans in the judiciary: \u201cHe will create emergencies, state of emergencies. You know, \u2018The world is falling apart. I have got to do A, B, and C.\u2019 And the courts will say, \u2018Yeah, of course you have the right to do it. You\u2019ve defined an emergency.\u2019\u201d Sanders says. \u201cThere\u2019s a real danger of us losing the rule of law.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mixing-orban-with-pinochet\" class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\t<strong>Mixing Orb\u00e1n with Pinochet<\/strong>\t<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhat will Trump\u2019s model of authoritarianism look like? Experts point to Hungary as a prime example, where Viktor Orb\u00e1n, the long-serving strongman, has undermined the country\u2019s courts, press freedoms, and minority rights to create what he touts as an \u201cilliberal democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t think we\u2019ll be as bad as Russia,\u201d Stanley says. \u201cIt\u2019s Orb\u00e1n, who\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/trump-orban-republicans-concerned-1235093328\/\">visiting and giving advice<\/a>.\u201d Stanley notes that Orb\u00e1n\u2019s mechanisms for controlling dissent are milder than Vladimir Putin\u2019s. \u201cThey\u2019ll probably do the Orb\u00e1n thing where they go after your taxes. They go after your livelihood, your job,\u201d he says of Trump. \u201cThey\u2019re not going to start assassinating people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBen-Ghiat agrees that Orb\u00e1n is a model for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/maga\/\" id=\"auto-tag_maga\" data-tag=\"maga\">MAGA<\/a> governance, but cautions that what Trump has in store \u201cwill be far more violent.\u201d The Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection is part of her calculus: \u201cOrb\u00e1n didn\u2019t stage a violent attack, sending lawmakers running for their lives.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tTrump\u2019s openly stated aims, she warns, bring a South American strongman to mind: \u201cHe\u2019s already talked about using the military against protesters, and in that sense, it would be more like Pinochet,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m not saying it\u2019s going to be a military dictatorship, but there are elements of what he would like to do in terms of domestic repression that hark back to\u201d the Chilean dictator.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"enabling-enemies-abroad-targeting-the-enemy-within\" class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\t<strong>Enabling Enemies Abroad, Targeting the Enemy Within<\/strong>\t<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tPerhaps Trump\u2019s darkest ambition is to shift part of America\u2019s prodigious military might from geopolitical adversaries abroad to political targets at home. Trump has indicated he\u2019ll let Putin lay claim to parts of occupied Ukraine in the name of \u201cpeace,\u201d and has treated Taiwan as far less than an ally, suggesting it needs to pay for America protecting it from China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cTrump\u2019s whole thing is that he would stand back,\u201d says Ben-Ghiat, from America\u2019s traditional role of providing a bulwark against expansionist autocrats like Putin and Xi. \u201cWhat he would like to do is partly reorient military power to be used for domestic repression.\u201d She points to Trump\u2019s mass deportation plan for the undocumented, involving rounding up and removing the equivalent population of Sweden or Belgium from the United States, calling it a \u201cvast repression\u201d on \u201ca historic dictator scale.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tTrump has preemptively offered police officers immunity from prosecution (in what Ben-Ghiat calls an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/trump-plan-cops-violent-american-death-squads-1235123895\/\">authoritarian bargain<\/a>\u201d) and he\u2019s repeatedly expressed his desire to use the National Guard and even the Army to enact his deportation scheme \u2014 as well as to suppress the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/trump-enemy-from-within-democrats-evil-1235135375\/\">\u201cenemy within\u201d<\/a> that opposes his designs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tHere, Snyder insists, is where the American public has its most important, and perhaps most challenging role to play. \u201cThe Trump-Vance initiatives can only work by getting the population involved \u2014 and basically corrupting us,\u201d he says. Snyder argues that even Americans who might share anger with Trump about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/immigration\/\" id=\"auto-tag_immigration\" data-tag=\"immigration\">immigration<\/a>, may yet be recruited to block the border camps promised by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/stephen-miller\/\" id=\"auto-tag_stephen-miller\" data-tag=\"stephen-miller\">Stephen Miller<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThat\u2019s the kind of active thinking that folks have to do \u2014 am I going to become the kind of person who takes part in this sort of thing? Am I going to become the kind of person who denounces my neighbors because they are not documented?\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"if-their-rights-are-on-the-line-my-rights-are-on-the-line\" class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\t<strong>\u201cIf Their Rights Are On The Line, My Rights Are On The Line<\/strong>\u201d\t<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tA key to resisting authoritarianism, Snyder says, is standing up for the rights of the least powerful first. \u201cIf protest comes down to the people who are protesting only because they <em>have<\/em> to, then you always lose,\u201d he says. \u201cIt has to be people who are one, two, three, four, even five steps away from being directly affected who show solidarity \u2014 and who also show pragmatism and wisdom by getting out early.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cIf you\u2019re more privileged, you should be thinking, \u2018What can I do for the least privileged people?\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cIf their rights are on the line, my rights are on the line. That\u2019s not just a moral position. It\u2019s actually, politically, 100 percent correct.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tEven as he insists that \u201cthe more privileged people have to lean out,\u201d Snyder recognizes that early returns on such bravery are bleak. He points to the \u201cdisturbing\u201d choices of the owners of <em>The<\/em> <em>Washington Post<\/em> and the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em> to block their newspapers from endorsing Kamala Harris in an apparent attempt to curry favor with Trump. \u201cThat\u2019s an example of the most privileged people saying, \u2018I\u2019m going to act like the least privileged people. I\u2019m going to pretend that <em>I\u2019m<\/em> the one who\u2019s going to be hurt here, and I\u2019m going to run away.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"clawing-democracy-back\" class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\t<strong>Clawing Democracy Back<\/strong>\t<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe most predictable part of Trump\u2019s effort to rule as an authoritarian is a supercharging of corruption and cronyism. The blowback to that will help build and strengthen opposition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThe economy is going to be based on, are you friends with Trump? Are you connected to him in some way,\u201d says Stanley, who predicts federal contracts will be \u201ctilted\u201d toward FOTs, or \u201cfriends of Trump.\u201d One measure of how bad it gets, Stanley says, half in jest, is what happens to Mark Cuban \u2014 the billionaire who campaigned most vigorously for Harris. (After Harris\u2019 loss Cuban <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mcuban\/status\/1854046994345382034\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted<\/a> his congratulations to Trump and Elon Musk.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSnyder, whose latest volume is called <em>On Freedom<\/em>, insists that brazen corruption can erode support for a cult of personality like Trump\u2019s. \u201cFolks have this fantasy that if you have a dictator, then the dictator is going to solve problems.\u201d But under Trump, he says, \u201cyou\u2019re going to have oligarchy, and a handful people are going to do much better \u2014 and everybody else is going to do worse, because the whole system is going to be corrupt and sticky\u201d and run by \u201cincompetent cronies.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cThat\u2019s going to be bad for almost everybody,\u201d Snyder says. \u201cAnd you can get a lot of support by pointing out how corruption is economically stupid, how corruption hurts everyday people in their everyday lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBoth Snyder and Ben-Ghiat point to the recent example of Poland, which has slowly <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/poland-election-government-tusk-c83032bf51c7017caf7dfbe2c90f1ba1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">beaten back<\/a> an Orb\u00e1n-style far-right takeover, as a model that can give Americans hope. \u201cIn Poland, the other side didn\u2019t give up,\u201d says Snyder. \u201cThey kept running, even when the elections [appeared] unfair. He exhorts Americans to support the institutions closest to them that uphold democratic norms \u2014 \u201cwhether that means some civil society organization, or state government, or a local mayor\u201d \u2014 and collectively try to strengthen those bodies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tDefending those institutions will give proponents of America\u2019s democratic experiment their best shot at recovery, when the MAGA movement stumbles. Here, Trump\u2019s age and lack of a clear successor offers some hope. \u201cHe\u2019s old, so at some point, age is going to make a difference,\u201d Stanley says. \u201cThere will be a power struggle.
