After accounting for factors like age, sex, body mass, education and lifestyle, the researchers determined that consuming nuts on a daily basis lowered risk of dementia by 12%.<\/p>\n<p>The benefits were even greater for those who opted for unsalted nuts and ate up to one handful, or 40 grams, every day \u2014 in that case, the risk of dementia was lowered by 16%.<\/p>\n<p>The findings were published in September in the journal Geroscience.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Nearly 7 million Americans have been\u00a0diagnosed with dementia, according to a recent study that warned that millions more likely have symptoms but have not been formally diagnosed. <span class=\"credit\">Robert Kneschke \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Research has long linked a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/alzheimers-and-dementia\/what-do-we-know-about-diet-and-prevention-alzheimers-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">poor diet to increased dementia risk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Obesity, diabetes and high cholesterol in midlife are among the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/31\/lifestyle\/14-behaviors-to-blame-for-nearly-half-of-dementia-cases-report\/\">14 modifiable lifestyle factors<\/a> The Lancet Commission, composed of 27 dementia experts, identified this year as fueling dementia diagnoses.<\/p>\n<p>Experts have suggested that the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/09\/lifestyle\/this-mediterranean-diet-go-to-could-help-stave-off-dementia\/\">Mediterranean<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/01\/03\/lifestyle\/best-diets-of-2024-according-to-experts\/\">DASH<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/26\/lifestyle\/neurosurgeon-reveals-10-simpleways-to-lower-dementia-risk\/\">MIND diets<\/a>, which are rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats, may be best for brain health.<\/p>\n<p>Nuts are a key component of the three eating plans.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9965316\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Writing last year in the journal Nutrients<\/a>, researchers from Spain reported that nuts \u201care a nutrient-dense food that contain a number of potentially neuroprotective components, including monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, fiber, B-vitamins, non-sodium minerals, and highly bioactive polyphenols.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"single__inline-module inline-module inline-module--newsletter aligncenter aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-newsletter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__title-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__unsubmitted-title-wrapper\">\n<h3 class=\"inline-module__title headline headline--combo-sm-md\">\n\t\t\t\t\tGet the latest breakthroughs in medicine, diet &amp;
