Some of the messages mentioned the Trump campaign \u2013 which strongly denied any connection.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Steven Cheung, a campaign spokesman, said: \u201cThe campaign has absolutely nothing to do with these text messages.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The source of the anonymous messages and the total number sent are unclear.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A 42-year-old mother in Indiana sent a copy of the texts her high-school-aged daughter received to the BBC. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The messages said that the daughter had &#8220;been selected to become a slave at your nearest plantation&#8221; and would be &#8220;picked up in a white van&#8221; and &#8220;searched thoroughly once you\u2019ve reached your destination&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The woman, who asked to remain anonymous for her safety, called the messages \u201cextremely, extremely alarming\u201d and made her feel &#8220;really vulnerable&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cIt\u2019s because of America\u2019s history, but the timing is specific to the day after the election,\u201d she said. \u201cThis had to be a strategised effort.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Another recipient, Hailey Welch, <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thecrimsonwhite.com\/117349\/news\/black-students-receive-racist-text-messages-after-trumps-win-part-of-apparent-nationwide-trend\/\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">told a University of Alabama student newspaper<!-- --><\/a> that several students on the campus had also received the messages.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cAt first I thought it was a joke, but everyone else was getting them. People were texting, posting on their stories, saying they got them,\u201d Ms Welch told The Crimson White. \u201cI was just stressed out, and I was scared because I didn\u2019t know what was happening.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The wording of the messages varied but generally instructed recipients to report to a \u201cplantation\u201d or wait to be picked up in a van, and referred to \u201cslave\u201d labour.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The texts were sent from numbers with area codes in at least 25 different states, according to CBS News, the BBC&#8217;s partner network in the US. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">TextNow, a mobile provider that allows people to create phone numbers for free, said it found one or more of its accounts were used to send text messages &#8220;in violation of its terms of service&#8221;. The company disabled the accounts within an hour of discovering the misuse, it said in a statement.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;We do not condone the use of our service to send harassing or spam messages and will work with the authorities to prevent these individuals from doing so in the future,&#8221; it said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Civil rights group NAACP condemned the messages saying they were a consequence of President-elect Trump\u2019s election.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;These actions are not normal, \u201d said the group&#8217;s chief executive Derrick Johnson. \u201cThese messages represent an alarming increase in vile and abhorrent rhetoric from racist groups across the country, who now feel emboldened to spread hate and stoke the flames of fear that many of us are feeling after Tuesday&#8217;s election results.\u201d  <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Jessica Rosenworcel, chairwoman of the Federal Communications Commission, which is also investigating the messages, said: &#8220;These messages are unacceptable.
