weeks and six days gestational age.<\/p>\n<p>As she fought for her life over 110 days in the neonatal intensive care unit, her care team told Colborne that her baby would need, and be eligible for, the medication that could protect her from RSV, and that if Georgia contracted it, she could die.<\/p>\n<p>RSV is highly contagious and can lead to severe outcomes. It is the number-one reason infants are admitted to hospital in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>In advance of RSV season, which begins in November and runs through March, Georgia\u2019s pediatrician wrote a supporting note, and applied for the shot, filling out the province\u2019s questionnaire and submitted it to the Provincial Health Services Authority\u2019s RSV program.<\/p>\n<p data-async=\"\">The province does not provide universal immunization for RSV, but uses <a data-evt-val=\"{\" control_fields=\"\" link=\"\" point=\"\" system=\"\" to=\"\" determine=\"\" eligibility=\"\" noreferrer=\"\" data-evt-typ=\"click\" href=\"https:\/\/www.childhealthbc.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/B.C.%20RSV%20Manual%202018-19.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a point system to determine eligibility<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were declined,\u201d said Colborne. \u201cDid B.C. not order enough? But that risk factor was not taken into consideration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were in the (neonatal intensive care unit) for 110 days. She had eye scans, she had blood transfusions, she had brain scans, she had two holes in her heart, she was on full oxygen support until April. How sick of a baby do you need to be to get this vaccine?\u201d asked Colborne.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe should qualify for it,\u201d said Fabiana Bacchini, who is executive-director of the Canadian Premature Babies Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe long-term impact of RSV on our babies is well-known, but the long-term affect preemies is even more severe. Children\u2019s Hospital, the Provincial Health Services Authority, and the B.C. Ministry of Health for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The province directed queries to B.C. Children\u2019s Hospital, stating \u201cthe (monoclonal antibodies) program is run through B.C. Children\u2019s Hospital and is not delivered by B.C.\u2019s publicly funded immunization program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Queries sent directly to the children\u2019s hospital were not returned, though the PHSA provided a response late Thursday on behalf of B.C. Children\u2019s that noted the province\u2019s RSV program is in line with recommendations from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization, and that the availability of the vaccine \u201cdepends on manufacturing capacity and delivery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach application is rigorously reviewed to ensure available supply is prioritized for the province\u2019s most vulnerable infants,\u201d according to a PHSA statement shared by PHSA spokesperson Vincent Chou.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis process is not taken lightly by BC Children\u2019s and BC Women\u2019s Hospital and Health Centre providers.\u00a0 Providers have a responsibility to ensure products are administered to eligible infants who will most benefit from the product, in line with the latest evidence. Canada\u2019s medical system bars her from getting it in another province.
