{"id":123811,"date":"2024-11-09T10:28:45","date_gmt":"2024-11-09T03:28:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=123811"},"modified":"2024-11-09T10:28:45","modified_gmt":"2024-11-09T03:28:45","slug":"alabama-schools-hit-with-whooping-cough-outbreaks-what-parents-need-to-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=123811","title":{"rendered":"Alabama schools hit with whooping cough outbreaks: What parents need to know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TF7SXHI5TNEM5N2LJABTJL5HZQ\">Pertussis cases continue to pop up across Alabama as public health officials confirm a drastic increase in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UVSGJ7KZNRBCLNSRFIMWQT74YM\">This week, Creekside Elementary School in Harvest notified parents that a case of pertussis, otherwise known as whooping cough, was reported at the school, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/whnt.com\/community\/creekside-elementary-school-warns-parents-after-whooping-cough-case-reported\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News 19<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2CKR4CO3ZVEBRJ2LGJDR7UWOVE\">This follows at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/2024\/10\/whooping-cough-found-at-alabama-schools-what-is-pertussis-should-parents-worry.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">four other cases that have been reported in Alabama schools<\/a> over the last few weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WV5DYPB7ZVH5LNCUBJ6QE7D7W4\">The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) previously confirmed whooping cough outbreaks in schools in Limestone, Madison, Jackson and Lauderdale Counties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OKZO3OR2ERD6ZL7UDKC5RDODWU\">The agency told News 19 it has received reports of 124 cases of the disease so far this year, compared to the 41 cases reported in 2023.<\/p>\n<section class=\"Stories-By-Author-module_wrapper__ezbcK Stories-By-Author-module_al__w--mX\"\/>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HZPAJ3U44VEEDDSZNQZOT4575M\">Earlier this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that whooping cough cases were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncird\/whats-new\/cases-of-whooping-cough-on-the-rise.html\">climbing back up<\/a> to pre-pandemic levels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MIKFOGEBSFCK7BQXVXQRG3K2KQ\">As of October, 18,506 cases of whooping cough had been reported so far in 2024, according to the CDC. <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/whooping-cough-pertussis-childhood-vaccine-02c66d962115e90c2a9bd9dd9c3138e1\">That\u2019s the most at this point in the year since 2014<\/a>, when cases topped 21,800.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ULXIDFBIJBAFRLAIUOKJAHY5WA\">Whooping cough is caused by bacteria infecting the mouth, nose and throat and is spread through the air by coughing. Symptoms can appear 5 to 21 days after infection and can usually be treated by a five-day antibiotic course, according to the ADPH.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"L743USRUPRC4BLE7LOJMTL7CQU\">Schools are advising parents to take their child to a physician if they have cold symptoms followed by a cough.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OGQR2BM3H5BY7GVDECKGUT3MX4\">The ADPH and the CDC also strongly recommend that parents look into the new whooping cough booster \u201cTdap,\u201d for children 11 years and older.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JVPATZRFF5BORBB3G2TYSA6RZI\">In Alabama, the \u201cDtap\u201d Pertussis vaccine is given until 7 years of age and vaccine protection begins to fade in older children.
