the hours and days since it became clear that Donald Trump would be re-elected president of the United States, there\u2019s been a <a href=\"https:\/\/trends.google.com\/trends\/explore?date=2024-11-03%202024-11-08&amp;geo=US&amp;q=4B&amp;hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surge of interest<\/a> in the US for 4B.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38yjdo000013b6m1iuznpmw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Young liberal women across TikTok and Instagram are discussing and sharing information about the South Korean feminist movement, in which straight women refuse to marry, have children, date or have sex with men.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38yjdo000023b6moj8d82a0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These women say they are enraged and fed up after a majority of their male counterparts voted for a candidate who was found liable for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/05\/09\/politics\/e-jean-carroll-trump-lawsuit-battery-defamation-verdict\/index.html\">sexual abuse <\/a>and whose appointment of three conservative Supreme Court justices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/06\/24\/politics\/dobbs-mississippi-supreme-court-abortion-roe-wade\/index.html\">led to the overturning<\/a> of national <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/24\/politics\/donald-trump-women-voters-protector-abortion\/index.html\">abortion rights<\/a> protections.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38yjdo000033b6m6jaazc32@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In response, they say they\u2019re swearing off men \u2014 and they\u2019re encouraging others around the country to join them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38yjdo000043b6m8riw5fj3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe have pandered and begged for men\u2019s safety and done all the things that we were supposed to, and they still hate us,\u201d Ashli Pollard, a 36-year-old in St. Louis, told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38yjdo000053b6m5cohtk9o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSo if you\u2019re going to hate us, then we\u2019re going to do what we want.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38yj3lw00003b6mff5bsgvc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            4B is a shorthand for the four Korean words bihon, bichulsan, biyeonae and bisekseu, which translate to no marriage, no childbirth, no dating and no sex with men.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38ykmks000i3b6m0imocou5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The 4B movement emerged in South Korea around 2015 or 2016, per Ju Hui Judy Han, an assistant professor in gender studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. Mostly popular among young women in their 20s, she described it as a fringe offshoot of #MeToo and other feminist movements that arose in response to stark gender inequality in the country.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38ykmks000k3b6mpyvmgoiy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2016, a woman was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/09\/21\/asia\/korea-angry-young-men-intl-hnk\/index.html\">brutally killed<\/a> near a Seoul subway station \u2014 the perpetrator <a href=\"https:\/\/english.hani.co.kr\/arti\/english_edition\/e_national\/744756.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly said<\/a> he killed her because he felt ignored by women. Women in the country are paid about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/10\/06\/business\/south-korea-hyundai-women-workforce-intl-hnk\/\">one-third less<\/a> than men, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/en\/data\/indicators\/gender-wage-gap.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a> from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development \u2014 the highest wage gap among OECD nations. And despite being one of the world\u2019s most advanced economies, women there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_GGGR_2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scarcely<\/a> represented in senior and managerial roles.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38yt836001r3b6mu91klgia@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The 4B movement was decentralized and existed in various iterations online and offline, making it difficult to assess its true size and scale. Over the years, the movement has diminished and splintered over disagreements about the role of queer and trans women, according to Han. But she says 4B and other South Korean feminist movements drew attention to gender inequality in the country and emphasized collective action.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38yo0fx001m3b6m4lua8rd4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s not a very widespread movement, but the sentiments behind it I think a lot of people empathize with,\u201d Han says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38ykmks000n3b6mquax3a7e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen there is such widespread violence against women, there is such systemic discrimination and inequality, when there\u2019s so much that make marriage, childbirth and child rearing \u2026  difficult, why and how could anyone imagine getting married and giving birth?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38ykmks000o3b6mf7yyffa5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Though South Korea\u2019s 4B movement mostly faded from media headlines in recent years, the US election has renewed interest.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38ym1o1001b3b6mrgkznppl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cA lot of us \u2014 straight or not, queer or not, whether you\u2019re in a marriage or not \u2014 are going to be in the same boat, dealing with an oppressive and violent institutions,\u201d Han says. \u201cAnd we see each other.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38ykf36000g3b6mly6wes6i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s far too early to tell whether the 4B movement might seriously catch on in the US. But so far, at least, it\u2019s generated a lot of online discussion among young women.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38yl3r1000w3b6m4x7gql0b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some women are discovering the movement anew and are vowing to join. Others who are already married or partnered up say they plan to protest in other ways, such as boycotting male-owned businesses or refusing to do emotional labor for men.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm391qvxk000s3b6msvnvwwwu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Pollard says she learned about South Korea\u2019s 4B movement a few years ago, inspiring her to \u201cexamine what a life looks like without centering men so deeply.\u201d Since 2022, she says she hasn\u2019t dated or slept with men and has realized that she\u2019s better off on her own. She has the resources to support herself without marriage, and she plans to have a child alone.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38zwa7s00053b6misaduzvn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Her decision to disengage from men wasn\u2019t necessarily an act of vengeance, she says. Rather, it was about putting herself first. Now that other women around the country have taken an interest in 4B, she says she wants them to realize that they have other options.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38yl3r1000x3b6mgxmr9bw2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou push people far enough and they\u2019re done,\u201d she says. \u201cHow will that affect politics? We\u2019ll see \u2026 but I think that women and their joy is going to be something that can\u2019t really be overlooked anymore. Women are choosing themselves in droves.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38yl3r1000y3b6mvry3ajbi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Alexa Vargas, a 26-year-old from Boston, says she stopped engaging with men a few years ago after a series of unhealthy relationships that included abuse and assault, and it wasn\u2019t until earlier this year that she realized there was a movement and language that aligned with her actions. Though she says that \u201cmen need a wake-up call,\u201d her decision is more about herself and other women.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38yl3r1000z3b6m7b4kiy6f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI don\u2019t know if men are going to change their ways. I don\u2019t know how this is going to pan out,\u201d she says. \u201cMy goal in life and in this movement is to protect young women and girls.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm391felv000q3b6m7s4gs5io@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Women who have been talking about 4B online say the way some men have responded to their posts are already proving their point.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38yl3r100123b6mkore7drv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Abby K.,<strong> <\/strong>a 27-year-old from Florida,<strong> <\/strong>recently broke up with her boyfriend over dismissive comments he made about Trump\u2019s history of sexual abuse. When she posted a video about that and her decision to join the 4B movement, she says men flooded her DMs with death threats and hateful comments about her appearance.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38yq7eh001p3b6mtkw9yqpq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt doesn\u2019t exactly entice you to re-enter the dating pool,\u201d she adds.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38yl3r100143b6mwltsrwls@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In Han\u2019s view, the 4B movement is unlikely to become mainstream in the US.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39172gg000n3b6m0zn8zk57@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She says it relies too heavily on the gender binary and that those inspired to join it as a result of the election are overlooking the fact that plenty of women voted for Trump, too. (Though Vice President Kamala Harris maintained an edge with women, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/interactive\/2024\/politics\/2020-2016-exit-polls-2024-dg\/\">exit polls<\/a> indicate that her lead was smaller than President Joe Biden\u2019s or former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton\u2019s during their respective presidential campaigns.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38z09tu00003b6mr39vhpj1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hadia Khanani, a 24-year-old from Florida, also has reservations about 4B in the US. Though she hasn\u2019t engaged with men romantically for several years in an effort to prioritize herself, she wants women to dig deeper and examine their own role in upholding patriarchy. She also worries about the consequences of further isolating men.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm395gyl8000f3b6mqtpq8zwo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe conversation online has been centered around sleeping with men and dating men, obviously to protect yourself, but I just feel like misogyny and patriarchy is much deeper than that,\u201d she says. \u201cI think a lot of it is rooted in the way that men are raised in society.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm390xhe6000f3b6m5p5zodgh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even if large numbers of women don\u2019t adopt the strict tenets of 4B, those who are taking part for now hope the recent conversations around it lead women to think about themselves and their circumstances differently.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm390ppde000c3b6mngqcn81g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI don\u2019t ever expect everyone in America to hold hands and agree not to date men,\u201d Abby K. says. \u201cI could definitely see it fueling change in some way.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm38yl3r100163b6mlszb3zbj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Han predicts that American interest in the 4B movement will subside quickly.
