The hate-filled rhetoric reminiscent of the country\u2019s painful and bigoted past has been reported in more than 20 states from <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NewYorkStateAG\/status\/1854666693865259331\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York<\/a> to California, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DCAttorneyGen\/status\/1854639086772109780\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">District of Columbia<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39kdhmj000y3b6mcemy45ob@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The <a href=\"https:\/\/naacp.org\/articles\/naacp-president-condemns-racist-text-messages-sent-black-americans-across-country\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NAACP\u2019s president <\/a>warned Thursday of possible broader implications, while attorneys general of both parties are <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DaveYostOH\/status\/1854668167282336154\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">condemning <\/a>the messages and vowing to root out their senders.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39kgqij00143b6me6xag221@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe unfortunate reality of electing a president who, historically, has embraced and at times encouraged hate, is unfolding before our eyes,\u201d NAACP CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/naacp.org\/articles\/naacp-president-condemns-racist-text-messages-sent-black-americans-across-country\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Derrick Johnson<\/a> said. \u201cThese messages represent an alarming increase in vile and abhorrent rhetoric from racist groups across the country, who now feel emboldened to spread hate and stoke the flames of fear that many of us are feeling after Tuesday\u2019s election results.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39l77yu003e3b6m1hzgp8mq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/search?q=%22Donald+Trump%22\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s presidential \u201ccampaign has absolutely nothing to do with these text messages,\u201d spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39khvxr001a3b6mtk1lltfq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Students from at least three historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) \u2013 Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, Fisk University in Nashville and Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina \u2013 have reported receiving the text messages, according to statements from the universities.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39kiuf1001g3b6m957pknyj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Communications Commission<\/a>\u2019s enforcement bureau is investigating the texts, FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.fcc.gov\/public\/attachments\/DOC-407312A1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a>. \u201cThese messages are unacceptable,\u201d she said. \u201cWe take this type of targeting very seriously.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39kk8oy001q3b6mx5w4d6rf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The FBI said it \u201cis aware of the offensive and racist text messages sent to individuals and is in contact with the Justice Department and other federal authorities on the matter,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/news\/press-releases\/fbi-statement-on-offensive-and-racist-text-messages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> Thursday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39kyux600373b6m2z1erlyq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here\u2019s what we know about the origins of the mass text messages and how its recipients were targeted:\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39kidtc001d3b6m7hlh2apn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It was not immediately clear who sent the messages, and there is no complete list of to whom they were delivered. At least some appear to have been sent through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.textnow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TextNow<\/a> in what the company believes \u201cis a widespread, coordinated attack,\u201d it told CNN on Friday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39kiv6x001i3b6msdxtokkf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAs soon as we became aware, our Trust &amp; Safety team acted quickly, rapidly disabling the related accounts in less than an hour,\u201d said the company, whose service lets people sign up anonymously using an email address and send texts that appear to come from a randomly generated phone number.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39kvh2500303b6myksp6y0n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            TextNow is \u201cworking alongside our industry partners to uncover more details and continue to monitor patterns to actively block any new accounts attempting to send these messages,\u201d the company told CNN. \u201cWe do not tolerate or condone the use of our service to send harassing or spam messages and will work with the authorities to prevent these individuals from doing so in the future.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39qzr6r000d3b6jefj1pr57@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The messages \u201cappear to be robotext messages,\u201d and the Nevada\u2019s Attorney General\u2019s Office is working with law enforcement to investigate their source, the office said <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NevadaAG\/status\/1854656553095188983\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a statement<\/a> on X.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39l790d003g3b6mqxe6jw77@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Whoever is sending the racist text messages is using anonymizing software to obscure their location, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill told CNN on Friday. At least some of the messages were sent using an email service routing traffic through Poland, but it does not mean it is where the sender is, the attorney general said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39l790d003i3b6m1xkeemts@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey could be coming from Napoleonville, Louisiana, for all we know. And while the school board noted \u201claw enforcement in some areas have announced they consider the messages low-level threats,\u201d it acknowledged the texts\u2019 effects.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39knv4c002b3b6mayg1209t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe recognize that the emotional and psychological impact on our students, staff, and particularly our communities of color is profound,\u201d the school board\u2019s statement reads. \u201cWe stand in solidarity with those who feel targeted and hurt by these actions.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39n450t005w3b6mwd0mv2j6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Students at major universities, including the University of Alabama, said they received the messages this week.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39kok60002h3b6mzspyjdhy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Black honors freshman Alysa was in tears and wanted to go home after getting a message saying she had been \u201cselected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation\u201d and should \u201cbe prepared to be searched down,\u201d her mother, Arleta McCall, told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39kpd70002o3b6m2tyfjbez@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s eerie that it\u2019s the day after the election. It\u2019s eerie that it came to my daughter\u2019s personal phone. It\u2019s eerie that it\u2019s only going to Black students,\u201d McCall said. \u201cHer group of friends have mapped out their paths to class so they can walk together and keep each other safe.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39nomm3006d3b6mzxrzlzqx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Black students at Missouri State University received the texts, too, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monaacp.org\/naacp-condemns-racist-messages-targeting-black-students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> from Missouri NAACP President Nimrod Chapel. \u201cIt points to a well-organized and resourced group that has decided to target Americans on our home soil based on the color of our skin,\u201d Chapel said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39s2xqy001g3b6j2dinsjnv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            CNN affiliates have reported instances of students receiving the racist texts in South Carolina, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, among other states.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39n8tbf00643b6mawvmx79d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe racist nature of these text messages is extremely disturbing, made even more so by the fact that children have been targeted,\u201d Megan Shafer, acting superintendent of the Lower Merion School District, in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, wrote in a letter to parents.\n    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm39k9zrl000h3b6m6t9j4cun@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"i-want-it-to-stop-grandmother-says\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n        \u2018I want it to stop,\u2019 grandmother says<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39k9xvh000f3b6m0fy0g3xh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When one of the texts popped up on a 12-year-old Milwaukee girl\u2019s phone, she immediately told her grandmother.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39mr66j005o3b6m7ld5n766@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou have been selected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation. Please have your belongings together by ten sharp. Our executive slaves will pick you up in a yellow van,\u201d the text read, using the girl\u2019s full name, CNN affiliate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisn.com\/article\/milwaukee-12-year-old-receives-racist-text-message-to-pick-cotton\/62853702\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WISN reported<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39moa70005j3b6myyvdz8pv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThat\u2019s the scary part. How did they get her name?\u201d the girl\u2019s grandmother Jackie Bradley told WISN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39mhwlq005a3b6m5basv9lm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The girl asked her grandmother if she had received the same text.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" \u201cI was disgusted and very, very it made me very upset because she had to receive that text and she don\u2019t know how to deal with that,\u201d Bradley said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39mn9xa005g3b6m51um1rl3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bradley said she reported the text to the police and the FBI.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" \u201cI want it to stop, and I want people to come together and just stop this nonsense,\u201d Bradley told WISN. \u201cWhen you\u2019re getting kids involved, let alone people of color receiving these texts, but then you send this to a child \u2026 It\u2019s not funny at all \u2026 I mean, if you have to prosecute somebody, to prosecute them because this is gone too far.\u201d\n Talaya Jones, a Black resident of Piscataway, New Jersey, was \u201cshocked,\u201d then angry and sad after receiving a racist text Wednesday telling her she had been \u201cselected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation\u201d and referring to \u201cexecutive slave catchers,\u201d she told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39lolzy004n3b6mau0t3grp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt really just shows that we didn\u2019t come as far as everybody thought we did as a nation, from back in the day when slavery was still a thing,\u201d Jones said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39lr8pm004q3b6m0m22xzat@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The text messages hark back to the era from the early 17th century to the end of the Civil War in 1865, when millions of enslaved Africans were shipped to the United States and forced to toil on plantations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39kod2m002e3b6mdlrp47ij@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/aia\/part4\/4p2956.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were forced to live and work<\/a> on plantations growing cotton, considered a leading cash crop. They picked cotton for long hours and endured heat, humidity, unsanitary conditions, untreated illnesses, malnourishment and rape.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39kokx4002j3b6mznozrurn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Enslaved people were often auctioned off and sold to other slave owners, leading to families being separated. Slave catchers, <a href=\"https:\/\/nleomf.org\/slave-patrols-an-early-form-of-american-policing\/#_edn1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">known as slave patrols<\/a>, were legally charged with controlling the enslaved population. Their duties included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/04\/21\/us\/university-school-milwaukee-lawsuit-craig-robinson\/index.html\">chasing down<\/a> and apprehending runaway slaves and returning them to their owners, enforcing curfews and beating and terrorizing slaves who were rebellious or disobedient.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39njn77006a3b6m1n1uy61q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe threat \u2014 and the mention of slavery in 2024 \u2014 is not only deeply disturbing, but perpetuates a legacy of evil that dates back to before the Jim Crow era, and now seeks to prevent Black Americans from enjoying the same freedom to pursue life, liberty, and happiness,\u201d NAACP CEO Johnson said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39lm6dk00473b6mm0dhn2h1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When Jones realized that young people were getting the texts, including elementary and middle school students, that\u2019s when the sadness set in, Jones said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39lmjqa004b3b6myyrl76l1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhy would you want to intentionally hurt somebody that you don\u2019t even know?\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39n6wo900623b6ma19jdp95@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Lodi, California, resident Tasha Dunham told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcvb.com\/article\/racist-texts-fbi-investigation-massachusetts\/62851189\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WCVB<\/a> her 16-year-old daughter had received a message telling her to report to a plantation in North Carolina.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39ul3a600033b6jbx3rfc0e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI wasn\u2019t in slavery. My mother wasn\u2019t in slavery. But we\u2019re a couple of generations away. So, when you think about how brutal and awful slavery was for our people, it\u2019s awful and concerning,\u201d Dunham said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39lmw1x004f3b6mkyf9ol1k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A day after receiving the text message, Jones also received an email addressing her by the N-word and containing a similar message about being \u201cselected to pick cotton.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm39lnhup004j3b6m01gx3ep1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWho is doing this and how are they able to keep coming back?\u201d she asked. \u201cYou don\u2019t feel safe in anything that you do, because you don\u2019t know who\u2019s doing it.
