A group of four long-dead Pompeiians, for instance \u2014 once thought to be parents and their children \u2014 turned out to have no biological relation to one another.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>A team of archaeologists and geneticists from the University of Florence in Italy, Harvard University and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany, were able to identify the sex and genetic ancestry of five individuals who died in the Mt. Vesuvius explosion in 79 CE. <\/p>\n<p>Their findings, published this week in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/current-biology\/abstract\/S0960-9822(24)01361-7?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS0960982224013617%3Fshowall%3Dtrue\">journal <em>Current Biology<\/em><\/a>, relied on DNA pulled from Pompeiians&#8217; remains that were preserved with casts made in the 1800s by filling the voids left by their decomposed bodies.<\/p>\n<p>Alissa Mittnik, a co-author with the Max Planck Institute, said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpg.de\/23699890\/1106-evan-dna-evidence-rewrites-story-of-people-buried-in-pompeii-eruption-150495-x\">a news release<\/a> that the findings &#8220;highlight the importance of integrating genetic data with archaeological and historical information to avoid misinterpretations based on modern assumptions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another discovery revealed that an adult wearing a golden bracelet and holding a child, long believed to be a mother and child, were actually an adult man and a biologically unrelated child.
