But I was in amazing cardiovascular shape. I tried to eat healthy \u2014 or as far as I knew it at the time,&#8221; he <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/james-van-der-beek-colorectal-cancer-exclusive-8741642\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told People<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow\"> <\/a>during a cover interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As for his challenges, he confessed the highs and lows of his difficult health battle.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The trickiest thing is there are so many unknowns with cancer,&#8221; he remarked. &#8220;You think, \u2018How do I fix this? Is this healing me? Is this hurting me? Is this working? Is it coming back?\u2019 As someone who likes answers, not knowing is one of the hardest things.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pull-quote\">\n<p class=\"quote-text\">&#8220;Then the gastroenterologist said \u2014 in his most pleasant bedside manner \u2014 that it was cancer. But when I cut that out and it didn\u2019t improve, I thought, \u2018All right, I better get this checked out.\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He scheduled a colonoscopy, and it was after the procedure that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/entertainment\/where-katie-holmes-michelle-williams-dawsons-creek-stars-25-years-later\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the actor<\/a> learned of his diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I felt really good coming out of anesthesia, that I\u2019d finally done it,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;Then the gastroenterologist said \u2014 in his most pleasant bedside manner \u2014 that it was cancer. The actor admitted he became very health conscious and began to read food labels in stores before making purchases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think the country is waking up to connecting with our food and recognizing just how much it&#8217;s processed and how far away it&#8217;s gotten from the way nature intended,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would encourage everyone to do the same because this is not a fun process. There are a lot of assumptions, I think, that we&#8217;ve all grown up with about what&#8217;s healthy and what&#8217;s not. I\u2019m in a place of healing, my energy levels are great. When I\u2019ve been out of the woods completely for what feels like a responsible amount of time, I\u2019ll circle back and let you know. I have a lot to live for,&#8221; Van Der Beek said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I really don&#8217;t feel like this is going to end me,&#8221; he explained. &#8220;I really feel like this is going to be the biggest life redirect, and I&#8217;m going to make changes that I never would&#8217;ve made otherwise.
