It was only two years ago that the month notched its best opening ever on Nov. 11 with <em>Black Panther: Wakanda Forever <\/em>($181.3M). It\u2019s the doom and gloom from the election, right? Because Trump might win, and Harris lose? That\u2019s why Sony\/Miramax\u2019s weepy <em>Here <\/em>was the only major movie last weekend? <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSources tell me that it wasn\u2019t the results of the elections per se they feared despite many around me in California staying at home this past Wednesday, rather how much TV spots had spiked. Pre-election weekend in 2016 when Trump would ultimately win, <em>Doctor Strange <\/em>led the box office with a great $85M opening. Post election weekend, <em>Doctor Strange <\/em>continued its run at No. 1 with a second weekend of $42.9M, however, Paramount\u2019s Denis Villeneuve sci-fi drama, <em>Arrival, <\/em>was one of two major studio wide studio entries and overindexed with a $24M opening followed by Universal\u2019s <em>Almost Christmas <\/em>which did $15.1M. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tWhat do we have this weekend? The third frame of Sony\u2019s <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/venom-the-last-dance\/\" id=\"auto-tag_venom-the-last-dance\" data-tag=\"venom-the-last-dance\">Venom: The Last Dance<\/a><\/strong> <\/em>still leading with <strong>$14M<\/strong>, and two modest budgeted movies, A24\u2019s <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/heretic\/\" id=\"auto-tag_heretic\" data-tag=\"heretic\">Heretic<\/a><\/strong> <\/em>with <strong>$10.5M<\/strong> and Lionsgate<em>\/<\/em>Kingdom Story\u2019s<strong> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/the-best-christmas-pageant-ever\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-best-christmas-pageant-ever\" data-tag=\"the-best-christmas-pageant-ever\">The Best Christmas Pageant Ever<\/a> <\/em><\/strong>with around <strong>$10M<\/strong>, give or take. While both overpeformed their high single digit NRG tracking estimates, they are around where <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/exhibition\/\" id=\"auto-tag_exhibition\" data-tag=\"exhibition\">exhibition<\/a> forecasted. While both titles could break even or more for both distributors at the end of the game, it\u2019s meh before the onslaught of Amazon\/MGM\u2019s Dwayne Johnson-Chris Evans Christmas movie <em>Red One, <\/em>and the perfect storm troika of <em>Wicked, Gladiator II <\/em>and <em>Moana II. <\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tI\u2019ve overwritten, and I\u2019ll write again: post Covid, we live in a marketplace where a studio either doubles down on promoting a movie they believe in and hits a homerun, or underspends so that they can make their margins and reap riches post theatrical. Studios execs cry for diversity of slate for all demos and releasing movies of all budget sizes, however, if they don\u2019t produce titles that can create a spark, then they\u2019re just surrendering to streaming. The marketplace demands more doubling-down and a consistent supply of it. Like many faith-based films, <em>The Best Christmas Pageant <\/em>ever receives a solid A CinemaScore. <em>Heretic <\/em>is the quintessential A24 movie, a smash with critics at 93% certified fresh and a C+ CinemaScore, an indicator that it\u2019s dividing audiences and creating chatter among them (Ari Aster\u2019s <em>Midsommar <\/em>earned a C+ while <em>Hereditary, <\/em>a big grossing title at $44M for the NYC-based label notched a D+). <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tMore\u2026. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<strong>FRIDAY PM:<\/strong> At this point in time, the spoils of a slow weekend are going to Sony\u2019s <em><strong>Venom: The Last Dance<\/strong> <\/em>which is looking at a No. 1 take around<strong> $14M<\/strong> for the 3-day after a $3.6M Friday at 3,905 sites. That\u2019s the first time ever that a <em>Venom <\/em>movie has held the top spot at the box office for three weekends running, and this one opened to the lowest in the franchise at $51M. Previously, 2018\u2019s <em>Venom <\/em>held the No. 1 spot for two weekends straight. That\u2019s at the top range of where exhibition forecasted the movie. The pic made its world premiere at TIFF and went on to play AFI. The movie was shot for a net production cost of $10M with Canadian tax credits. Small share of foreign sales covering this largely domestic driven piece of IP. Lionsgate hopes for a $20M-$25M end game at the domestic box office. If the movie hits $10M, it will rep the second highest opening for Lionsgate YTD after <em>Strangers \u2013 Chapter 1 <\/em>which debuted to $11.8M back in May and finaled at $35.2M U.S.\/Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe seventh weekend of DreamWorks Animation\/Universal\u2019s<strong> <em>The Wild Robot<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em>at 3,051 sites is <strong>$5M<\/strong>, -33% after a<strong> $1.25M<\/strong> Friday for a running total by Sunday of <strong>$129.2M<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tFifth is Paramount\u2019s fourth weekend of <em><strong>Smile 2 <\/strong><\/em>at 2,822 sites for a Friday of<strong> $1.4M<\/strong>, 3-day of <strong>$4.7M<\/strong>, -30% for a <strong>$60.2M<\/strong> cume by EOD Sunday.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tKeep in mind that with schools off on Monday, Veterans Day, all these movies are going to see some lagniappe in theirs tills. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<strong>FRIDAY AM: <\/strong>A24\u2019s <em><strong>Heretic<\/strong>, <\/em>the R-rated horror movie from <em>A Quiet Place <\/em>scribes Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, began its journey this weekend with <strong>$1.2 million <\/strong>in previews last night that began at 7 p.m. That figure doesn\u2019t include the Salt Lake City sneaks that recently occurred.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<em>Heretic<\/em>\u2018s Thursday number is $100,000 shy from the amount that A24\u2019s Ari Aster horror pic <em>Hereditary <\/em>did back in summer 2018, but above the $1M that Universal\u2019s Radio Silence horror movie <em>Abigail <\/em>did and the $725K that Lionsgate\/Blumhouse\u2019s <em>Imaginary <\/em>took in; <em>Abigail <\/em>opened to $10.2M back in April while <em>Imaginary <\/em>did $9.9M back in March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<em>Heretic <\/em>is expected to open to <strong>$10M-$12M <\/strong>and could steal the No. 1 spot from Sony\u2019s <em>Venom: The Last Dance<\/em>, which is entering its third frame.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe Hugh Grant-starring <em>Heretic <\/em>is 94% certified fresh with critics and received 3 stars from audiences last night.
