Fragments of the famous border still remain today."},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>Communist East Germany closed its border in Berlin on Aug. 13, 1961, when it erected a wall that eventually turned into an increasingly elaborate fortification snaking through the city and around capitalist West Berlin.<\/p>\n<p>The heavily fortified border \u2014the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pictures\/the-fall-of-the-berlin-wall-and-end-of-a-divided-germany\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Berlin Wall\u2014<\/a><\/span>\u00a0plugged the last gap between East and West.<\/p>\n<p>On Nov. 9, 1989, the border was opened, and the Berlin Wall ceremoniously came down as the world watched. The efforts to perfect the border fortifications in Berlin continued until 1989.<\/p>\n<h2>President John F. Kennedy&#8217;s pledge for freedom<\/h2>\n<p>President John F. Kennedy toured West Germany on June 26, 1963. A new travel law mistakenly announced on Nov. 9, 1989, led to an onslaught of people to rush the Berlin Wall.<\/p>\n<h2>How did the Berlin Wall fall?<\/h2>\n<p>The Bornholmer Strasse crossing in Berlin was the first to open that night.
