A team of ocean explorers spotted what looked like a \u201c\u2018yellow brick road\u2019 to the mythical city of Atlantis\u201d while exploring the ocean floor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.papahanaumokuakea.gov\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.papahanaumokuakea.gov\/\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.papahanaumokuakea.gov\/\" aria-label=\"Papah\u0101naumokuakea Marine National Monument\">Papah\u0101naumokuakea Marine National Monument<\/a> in the Pacific Ocean west of Hawaii. The formation\u2019s resemblance to a human-built road captured the public\u2019s imagination, but it isn\u2019t an artifact from a long-lost civilization that was swept under the waves.<\/p>\n<p>The video came from a remote-operated vehicle piloted by the crew of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nautiluslive.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/nautiluslive.org\/\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/nautiluslive.org\/\" aria-label=\"Exploration Vessel Nautilus\">Exploration Vessel Nautilus<\/a>. The research vessel is operated by the nonprofit Ocean Exploration Trust. OET has active outreach and public engagement components to its work, so the group often livestreams the E\/V Nautilus adventures. Seamounts are underwater mountains.<\/p>\n<p><fbs-ad position=\"inread\" progressive=\"\" ad-id=\"article-0-inread\" aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"presentation\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Casual viewers might miss what\u2019s really going on with the road-like formation. \u201cWhat may look like a \u2018yellow brick road\u2019 to the mythical city of Atlantis is really an example of ancient active volcanic geology,\u201d the team wrote at the time. The original video features enthusiastic live commentary from researchers who were wowed by the appearance of the rock and likened it to the yellow brick road from <em>The Wizard of Oz<\/em>. Hyaloclastite rock forms when lava flows into water, ice or watery sediments. It\u2019s a common occurrence with undersea eruptions and can often create angular forms.<\/p>\n<p>OET also posted a video on X explaining how the brick-like formations are likely caused by heating and cooling stress from multiple eruptions.<\/p>\n<p>E\/V Nautilus has made multiple visits to the Papah\u0101naumoku\u0101kea Marine National Monument to map previously unsurveyed areas. Besides taking a literal deep dive into the geology of the area, the vessel also collected data on the animals and microorganisms that call the seamounts home. \u201cThese studies will help provide baseline information on the living communities of seamounts which can inform management and conservation measures,\u201d the team said. There\u2019s much more to discover. Papah\u0101naumoku\u0101kea covers over 582,500 square miles and is one of the largest marine conservation areas in the world.<\/p>\n<p>E\/V Nautilus hasn\u2019t slowed down since the yellow brick road.
