(Photo by NASA\/Space Frontiers\/Getty Images)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/fbs-accordion><small>Getty Images<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The International Space Station &#8211; a blazing symbol of humanity\u2019s destiny to move out across the cosmos &#8211; must be saved from NASA\u2019s plan to crash the orbital outpost into the Antarctic seas, says a director of the National Space Society.<\/p>\n<p>The ISS represents not only the peak of a global technological society, but also a triumph of \u201cspace diplomacy\u201d &#8211; fusing breakthroughs by spaceflight powers across the continents &#8211; and should be protected for citizens of the centuries ahead, says <a href=\"https:\/\/nss.org\/madhu-thangavelu-biography\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/nss.org\/madhu-thangavelu-biography\/\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/nss.org\/madhu-thangavelu-biography\/\" aria-label=\"Madhu Thangavelu, a co-leader of the Space Society\">Madhu Thangavelu, a co-leader of the Space Society<\/a>, whose core mission is to create a spacefaring civilization.<\/p>\n<p>An orbital treasure house of Free World ideals and the cross-cultural quest to create a utopian future, the Station should be given sanctuary in a higher orbit, Professor Thangavelu, who also heads a <a href=\"https:\/\/today.usc.edu\/profile\/madhu-thangavelu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/today.usc.edu\/profile\/madhu-thangavelu\/\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/today.usc.edu\/profile\/madhu-thangavelu\/\" aria-label=\"futuristic space architecture studio\">futuristic space architecture studio<\/a> at the University of Southern California, told me in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>Thangavelu is just one of the world-leading space scholars planet-wide who have been shell-shocked by NASA\u2019s bombshell plan, unveiled in June, to despatch the $100-billion Station on a final kamikaze flight &#8211; to explode on impact with the remote Southern Ocean around the year 2030.<\/p>\n<p><fbs-ad position=\"inread\" progressive=\"\" ad-id=\"article-0-inread\" aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"presentation\"\/><\/p>\n<p>He says he backs replacing NASA\u2019s \u201ccrash and burn\u201d scheme with a counter-strategy outlined by the onetime heads of the European Space Agency and of NASA to protect the ISS into the far future.<\/p>\n<p>Jean-Jacques Dordain, ESA\u2019s Director General when the ISS was being assembled 400 kilometers above the Earth, and his American counterpart, former NASA Administrator Michael Griffin, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kevinholdenplatt\/2024\/07\/13\/us-plan-to-crash-space-station-is-condemned-by-space-agency-leaders\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kevinholdenplatt\/2024\/07\/13\/us-plan-to-crash-space-station-is-condemned-by-space-agency-leaders\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kevinholdenplatt\/2024\/07\/13\/us-plan-to-crash-space-station-is-condemned-by-space-agency-leaders\/\" aria-label=\"have issued a joint appeal\" rel=\"noopener\">have issued a joint appeal<\/a> to all five partners on the Station that it be preserved as an outstanding beacon of human inventiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than being plunged into the seas, Dordain told me in an interview, the Space Station should be propelled upward, as a gift to astrophysicists, astronauts and space aficionados not yet born.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed-base image-embed embed-1\" role=\"presentation\"><figcaption><fbs-accordion class=\"expandable\" current=\"-1\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"color-body light-text\">American, European, Russian, Japanese and Canadian astronauts all helped co-build the ISS, and this <span class=\"plus\" data-ga-track=\"caption expand\">&#8230; [+]<\/span><span class=\"expanded-caption\"> cross-cultural space coalition could co-shape the Station&#8217;s new life in a sanctuary orbit (Photo by NASA\/Getty Images)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/fbs-accordion><small>Getty Images<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While NASA has commissioned SpaceX to design an assassin spacecraft that would guide the ISS to its deep-sea death, the dual space agency leaders say the very same SpaceX booster could instead be used to rescue the Station and give it a new life at a higher altitude.<\/p>\n<p>Transforming this SpaceX-ISS flight into a resurrection mission \u201cis the right thing to do, if the U.S. hopes to remain the leader and maintain our preeminence in human spaceflight and chart new territory like preservation of species heritage in space,\u201d says Thangavelu, a onetime fellow at NASA\u2019s Institute of Advanced Concepts who is also a scholar at the French-based International Space University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think ISS is a unique facility in many respects. Science and engineering aside, it has paved the way for peaceful global cooperation, even among terrestrial adversaries, to this day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a symbol of freedom,\u201d he adds. \u201cAnd there has never been such a facility or such intense collaboration among nations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NASA should reshape the Space Station\u2019s destiny by teaming up with its partners &#8211; the European, Russian, Japanese and Canadian space agencies &#8211; to rewrite their Intergovernmental Agreement on the ISS.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed-base image-embed embed-2\" role=\"presentation\"><figcaption><fbs-accordion class=\"expandable\" current=\"-1\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"color-body light-text\">American Space Shuttle Discovery is deployed to help construct the ISS 400 kilometers above the <span class=\"plus\" data-ga-track=\"caption expand\">&#8230; [+]<\/span><span class=\"expanded-caption\"> azure globe. The Station should be elevated into an orbital haven in recognition of its role as a heroic icon of the Space Age, says Roger Launius, NASA\u2019s onetime Chief Historian, so that its epic space adventure can be extended across a new era.<\/p>\n<p>Rick Tumlinson, a torchbearer in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kevinholdenplatt\/2024\/07\/31\/mark-kelly-could-halt-plans-to-crash-the-international-space-station\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kevinholdenplatt\/2024\/07\/31\/mark-kelly-could-halt-plans-to-crash-the-international-space-station\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kevinholdenplatt\/2024\/07\/31\/mark-kelly-could-halt-plans-to-crash-the-international-space-station\/\" aria-label=\"\u201cSave Our Station,\u201d or SOS movement\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cSave Our Station,\u201d or SOS movement<\/a>, has orchestrated parallel appeals by contacting Members of Congress to safeguard the ISS and by seeking out onetime ISS astronauts to join the rescue operation. Tumlinson, whose venture capital firm SpaceFund has invested in some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kevinholdenplatt\/2024\/08\/10\/starlab-set-to-orbit-above-moscows-missiles-if-space-truce-holds\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kevinholdenplatt\/2024\/08\/10\/starlab-set-to-orbit-above-moscows-missiles-if-space-truce-holds\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kevinholdenplatt\/2024\/08\/10\/starlab-set-to-orbit-above-moscows-missiles-if-space-truce-holds\/\" aria-label=\"independent space stations\" rel=\"noopener\">independent space stations<\/a> slated to replace the ISS in low Earth orbit, has also sought allies across the NewSpace sector to help shield the outpost.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed-base image-embed embed-3\" role=\"presentation\"><figcaption><fbs-accordion class=\"expandable\" current=\"-1\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"color-body light-text\">A German astronaut, part of a European Space Agency contingent, conducts an ISS spacewalk while <span class=\"plus\" data-ga-track=\"caption expand\">&#8230; [+]<\/span><span class=\"expanded-caption\"> circling the planet at 28,000 kilometers per hour  (Photo by Alexander Gerst \/ ESA via Getty Images)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/fbs-accordion><small>getty<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meanwhile, Professor Thangavelu, conceptual designer of space stations, <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=nVaAP0QAAAAJ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=nVaAP0QAAAAJ\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=nVaAP0QAAAAJ\" aria-label=\"Moon habitats and other extraterrestrial outposts\">Moon habitats and other extraterrestrial outposts<\/a>, says the International Space Station would make the perfect centerpiece in his envisioned International Space Artifacts Museum, a fantastical floating citadel to spaceflight advances that would orbit around the Earth-Moon L1 Lagrange point.<\/p>\n<p>In his sensational masterplan for this first celestial museum complex, Thangavelu also aims to one day rescue the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kevinholdenplatt\/2024\/10\/23\/space-pilot-aims-to-save-civilization-by-spreading-it-to-more-planets\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kevinholdenplatt\/2024\/10\/23\/space-pilot-aims-to-save-civilization-by-spreading-it-to-more-planets\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kevinholdenplatt\/2024\/10\/23\/space-pilot-aims-to-save-civilization-by-spreading-it-to-more-planets\/\" aria-label=\"Hubble Space Telescope\" rel=\"noopener\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a>, which is now in danger of falling back to Earth, and give it refuge, along with other pinnacles of aerospace engineering and design that chart the rise of the globe\u2019s first techno-civilization.<\/p>\n<p>While the SpaceX booster commissioned by NASA could initially transport the ISS to a \u201cparking orbit,\u201d he says, still-to-be-perfected electric thrusters, powered by the ISS solar arrays, could ultimately speed the Station to its far-off Lagrange L1 destination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina is already using advanced electric propulsion to maintain the <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/chinas-new-space-station-powered-ion-thrusters\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/chinas-new-space-station-powered-ion-thrusters\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/futurism.com\/chinas-new-space-station-powered-ion-thrusters\" aria-label=\"Tiangong orbiting station\">Tiangong orbiting station<\/a>,\u201d he says. \u201cWe should be using similar technology to keep ISS flying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElectric propulsion is far more efficient and produces much gentler thrust continuously, just what we need for ISS, once we push it a bit higher with regular chemical thrusters.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed-base image-embed embed-4\" role=\"presentation\"><figcaption><fbs-accordion class=\"expandable\" current=\"-1\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"color-body light-text\">The ISS, propelled by a future advanced electric propulsion system, in flight to become the <span class=\"plus\" data-ga-track=\"caption expand\">&#8230; [+]<\/span><span class=\"expanded-caption\"> centerpiece of humanity&#8217;s first orbital space museum<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/fbs-accordion><small>Rendering of ISS in flight by Madhu Thangavelu and courtesy of Madhu Thangavelu<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI think ISS has many more years of useful life,\u201d he adds. If NASA still opts to decommission the ISS in 2030, it might consider handing over operational control of the Station to SpaceX, which could reopen the outpost as \u201ca space tourist attraction for a few years before converting ISS into a museum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In its initial \u201cISS Transition Report\u201d &#8211; outlining the scheme to destroy the Station &#8211; NASA\u2019s leadership projected the agency would save $1.3 billion in operating costs for the orbiting laboratory by 2031, which could in turn be funneled into expanding Moon missions.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Thangavelu says he has formulated an alternative, overarching spaceflight strategy for NASA that would allow the agency to save many times that amount: the National Aeronautics and Space Administration should renounce its plans to build the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/reference\/gateway-about\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/reference\/gateway-about\/\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/reference\/gateway-about\/\" aria-label=\"Moon-orbiting Gateway space station\">Moon-orbiting Gateway space station<\/a>, an extraneous project that will do little to advance astronaut landings amid the orb\u2019s ancient craters.<\/p>\n<p>The envisaged, four-module Gateway, he says, adds needless complexity and expense to the NASA-led quest for North American, Japanese and European discoverers to touch down near the Moon\u2019s South Pole, and can be abolished without jeopardizing these targeted Moonwalking missions across the 2020s, he says.<\/p>\n<p>Jettisoning the Gateway blueprints, he adds, would help NASA and its partners laser focus on exploring the lava tubes and \u201cpeaks of eternal light\u201d around the polar sector while mapping candidate sites for the first human settlement on the Moon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLunar lava tubes would be ideal locations to build permanent habitats, naturally protected from the harsh space and lunar surface environments,\u201d says Thangavelu, who has written extensively on robotically constructing these first-wave sanctuaries for a new branch of civilization on the Moon.<\/p>\n<p>During the first human landings on the Moon in the new millennium, Artemis aeronauts will touch down inside the colossal next-generation Starships that NASA has commissioned SpaceX to fly. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/vehicles\/starship\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/vehicles\/starship\/\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/vehicles\/starship\/\" aria-label=\"SpaceX\u2019s supersize Starship capsule\">SpaceX\u2019s supersize Starship capsule<\/a>, with its 1100 cubic meters of pressurized living space &#8211;
