Two meteor showers are currently flashing in the night sky across the US, the Southern Taurids reached their zenith last Tuesday morning and the Northern Taurids will reach their peak on Nov. 12, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfaa.com\/article\/news\/nation-world\/taurid-meteor-showers\/507-faa093e1-4a4d-44eb-9857-455fa200c1a9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to the Associated Press<\/a>. The showers will likely continue to be visible through December.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>However in this case, it&#8217;s very unlikely that the light show over Dallas was a meteor, WFAA&#8217;s weather team concluded.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>There are close to 6,000 tons of &#8220;space junk&#8221; in the Earth&#8217;s orbit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/headquarters\/library\/find\/bibliographies\/space-debris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to NASA<\/a>. Most of those materials are moving very fast, about 18,000 miles per hour, almost seven times faster than a bullet, according to NASA.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>The volume of space debris in Earth&#8217;s orbit, and the amount of debris means space junk does &#8220;pose a safety risk to people and property in space and on Earth,&#8221; according to NASA. However, usually, debris falling from the sky breaks up upon reentry and burns up before it hits the earth, according to an<a href=\"https:\/\/orbitaldebris.jsc.nasa.gov\/reentry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0article from NASA<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Approximately 160 large objects, such as satellites, made uncontrolled reentries in 2021, according to \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Space_Safety\/ESA_s_Space_Environment_Report_2023\" color=\"accent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" id=\"isPasted\">ESA\u2019s 2023 Space Environmental Report<\/a>.
