Ali Sheffeh. \u201cThey are also at risk for other cardiovascular events.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">triloks<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/05\/19\/i-had-a-headache-for-5-days-turns-out-i-had-a-stroke-at-32\/\">A stroke happens<\/a>\u00a0when\u00a0blood flow\u00a0to the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel ruptures, leaking blood into the brain. <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/19\/lifestyle\/dont-delay-care-if-you-experience-these-stroke-symptoms\/\">Risk factors<\/a>\u00a0include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/14\/lifestyle\/untreated-high-blood-pressure-linked-to-higher-alzheimers-risk\/\">high blood pressure<\/a>, elevated cholesterol, high blood sugar and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/24\/lifestyle\/obesity-rates-in-us-not-growing-for-first-time-in-a-decade-but-severe-obesity-on-the-rise-cdc\/\">obesity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Stroke was the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/08\/lifestyle\/covid-19-no-longer-a-top-cause-of-us-death-2023-data-shows\/\">fourth leading cause of death<\/a>\u00a0in the US last year, accounting for 162,600 deaths,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2822207\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to preliminary data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Sheffeh\u2019s team reviewed records for more than 7,000 elderly adults who experienced a clot-caused stroke between 2000 and 2022. Nearly all the patients had Type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Stroke risk factors\u00a0include\u00a0high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, high blood sugar and\u00a0obesity. <span class=\"credit\">adamkaz<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Over three years, researchers tracked those who were prescribed either a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/18\/lifestyle\/famed-diabetes-doctor-reveals-whats-next-for-ozempic-like-drugs\/\">GLP-1 drug like Ozempic<\/a> or an SGLT2 medication like Jardiance after their initial stroke to see if they had a second stroke, suffered a heart attack, or died.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>GLP-1 drugs treat diabetes and stimulate weight loss by mimicking he naturally occurring hormone GLP-1, which signals the body that it is full.<\/p>\n<p>SGLT2 inhibitor medications help manage blood sugar levels by preventing the kidneys from reabsorbing sugar.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that those who took either drug had a 74% lower risk of early death and an 84% reduced risk of a heart attack. SGLT2 users had a 67% decreased risk of another stroke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe results of the study are consistent with other research about the preventive role of these medications against cardiovascular disease in people with obesity or heart failure,\u201d said Sheffeh, a research scholar at the Mayo Clinic.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>SGLT2 inhibitor medications like Jardiance help manage blood sugar levels by preventing the kidneys from reabsorbing sugar. <span class=\"credit\">Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The study authors note that GLP-1 drugs have been shown to <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26803771\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lower blood pressure<\/a> and help prevent the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36508493\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hardening of arteries<\/a>, a major risk factor for strokes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGLP-1 [drugs] can actually decrease clumping of blood platelets, and that, in itself, could decrease the risk of clotting and lead to a lower risk of stroke,\u201d said Dr. Cheryl Bushnell, professor and vice chair of research in the department of neurology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese medications could be really important,\u201d Bushnell added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"single__inline-module inline-module inline-module--newsletter aligncenter aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-newsletter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__title-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__unsubmitted-title-wrapper\">\n<h3 class=\"inline-module__title headline headline--combo-sm-md\">\n\t\t\t\t\tGet the latest breakthroughs in medicine, diet &amp;
