First, her husband poked his head in \u2014 their daughter was pleading for her to say good night. No problem, Ms. Ruch thought. She sat with her daughter for a while and then came back to the machine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But just as she was breaking a sweat, her son wandered over, asking for help finding something to do. She sighed and turned off the machine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI had left the door wide open,\u201d she said. After helping him, she surrendered to the couch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It\u2019s a story that\u2019s played out in millions of homes, as women feel pulled between taking care of themselves and taking care of family. In <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/women-may-realize-health-benefits-regular-exercise-more-men\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">one recent study<\/a> of 400,000 Americans, only 33 percent of women met weekly recommendations for aerobic exercise, as opposed to 43 percent of men. Other studies, including <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s40279-017-0754-7\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a 2017 study of 147 countries<\/a>, have confirmed this phenomenon across ages and demographics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Experts say this <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanpub\/article\/PIIS2468-2667(19)30135-5\/fulltext\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">exercise gender gap<\/a> has a lot to do with the disproportionate amount of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/08\/well\/family\/kinkeeping-families.html\" title=\"\">time and labor<\/a> women devote to caring for the home and for others. It\u2019s also consistent with <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8978476\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">research<\/a> suggesting that, on the whole, women tend to prioritize other people\u2019s health above their own, experts said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThey make the time for themselves when there is no one else to be taken care of,\u201d said Stephanie Roth-Goldberg, a clinical social worker and therapist in New York.
