How cool would it have been to have this daily, quick-hit game to look forward to every December, to make playing through the levels again and again an annual tradition?<\/p>\n<p>Alas, that wasn&#8217;t meant to be&#8230; until recently.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gallery\">\n<div class=\"cols cols-2\">\n<div class=\"col col-1 col-width-50\"><a title=\"Mission in Snowdriftland\" class=\"scanlines\" href=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/dfe55e8b28d83\/mission-in-snowdriftland.large.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/dfe55e8b28d83\/mission-in-snowdriftland.445x250.jpg\" width=\"445\" height=\"250\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Mission in Snowdriftland\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"col col-1 col-width-50\"><a title=\"Mission in Snowdriftland\" class=\"scanlines scanlines\" href=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/1195499f51941\/mission-in-snowdriftland.large.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/1195499f51941\/mission-in-snowdriftland.445x250.jpg\" width=\"445\" height=\"250\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Mission in Snowdriftland\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"caption\"><em class=\"credit\">Images: tons of bits<\/em><\/figcaption><\/aside>\n<p>In December 2018, a full, playable version of the original game was discovered online. Then, in 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EphH4hwkr2g\">a YouTube video<\/a> from minutiae enthusiast Nick Robinson brought more attention to Mission in Snowdriftland, and also revealed that tons of bits had decided to remaster the game for release <a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/1515200\/Mission_in_Snowdriftland\/\">on Steam<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The remaster eventually dropped in 2021, and at last, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendolife.com\/games\/switch-eshop\/mission_in_snowdriftland\">Mission in Snowdriftland<\/a> (at this point cutting &#8220;UPIXO In Action&#8221; from its official title) was back. Naturally, there were welcomed new quality-of-life features, like full-screen play, controller support, achievements, a speedrun timer, and the ability to play in either the patient Advent calendar style or just blow through all 24 levels at once.<\/p>\n<p>This version also had the Nintendo-ness removed from it: tons of bits&#8217; relationship with the company was over, so gone were the advertisements for 15-year-old games from now-obsolete platforms. That said, the Nintendo connection isn&#8217;t quite severed with Mission in Snowdriftland.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"picture\"><a class=\"scanlines\" title=\"Mission in Snowdriftland\" href=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/9de1d66ad00b5\/mission-in-snowdriftland.large.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/9de1d66ad00b5\/mission-in-snowdriftland.450x.jpg 450w, https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/9de1d66ad00b5\/mission-in-snowdriftland.900x.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 799px) 450px, (min-width: 800px)\" src=\"https:\/\/images.nintendolife.com\/9de1d66ad00b5\/mission-in-snowdriftland.900x.jpg\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Mission in Snowdriftland\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption\"><em class=\"credit\">Image: tons of bits<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In October, tons of bits took to Instagram to share <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DA6FaacILnn\/\">a cute photo<\/a>, of a Chubby plush cuddled up with a Nintendo Switch, overlayed with the text, &#8220;THIS WINTER,&#8221; followed by tantalising ellipses. Either Chubby is getting a Switch of his own for Christmas, or tons of bits is bringing Mission in Snowdriftland to Nintendo&#8217;s hit console. Fortunately (with apologies to plush Chubby), it&#8217;s the latter: It was just confirmed the game is getting a Switch release on 29th November.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"object object-instagram\">\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/instagram.com\/p\/DCHj4uhoPVv\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\" style=\"display:inline-block; background:#FFF; border:0; border-radius:3px; box-shadow:0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width:540px; min-width:326px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% - 2px); width:calc(100% - 2px);\"\/><\/aside>\n<p>Given its increased accessibility, the possibility of Mission in Snowdriftland fulfilling its potential and becoming a holiday gaming cult classic is stronger than ever. It&#8217;s already reached that status for me personally. For the past two Decembers, on the first of the month, I&#8217;ve fired up Mission in Snowdriftland and explored the familiar opening level.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s not even a nostalgia angle for me: I first heard of the game from Robinson&#8217;s video and was quickly charmed by its well-designed visuals, its delightfully festive music, and the novelty of the game&#8217;s Advent calendar schtick. When I then played it myself, I was surprised by the crisp and satisfying gameplay. It&#8217;s just a fun game.<\/p>\n<p>Now, even more people can experience this distinct detail of Nintendo history, and perhaps even make it a new holiday tradition. No longer does this particular Advent calendar need to be a missed opportunity.
