The American Meteor Society received <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/fireball.amsmeteors.org\/members\/imo_view\/event\/2024\/6794\" data-url=\"https:\/\/fireball.amsmeteors.org\/members\/imo_view\/event\/2024\/6794\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">36 different reports<\/a> about the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/meteor-green-fireball-international-space-station-matthew-dominick-video\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/meteor-green-fireball-international-space-station-matthew-dominick-video\">bright fireball<\/a> as it passed over Colorado, Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma. The sightings were mostly clustered around the Oklahoma City and Dallas-Fort Worth regions.<\/p>\n<p>As it turns out, this was likely no ordinary meteor. I saw it as a glowing area that became more clearly a large fireball that had fragmented,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/fireball.amsmeteors.org\/members\/imo_view\/report\/359523\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/fireball.amsmeteors.org\/members\/imo_view\/report\/359523\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote Ryan T.<\/a> of Kaufman, Texas.<\/p>\n<p>As more and more of these Starlink reentries occur (and as SpaceX continues to launch them weekly), some astronomers and environmental scientists say the effects of these reentries aren&#8217;t well understood and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-launches-satellite-reentries-air-pollution-concerns\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-launches-satellite-reentries-air-pollution-concerns\">could be harming Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As these satellites burn up in the atmosphere, they release harmful aluminum oxide, which can harm Earth&#8217;s protective ozone layer and alter its ability to reflect sunlight; both of these factors change the temperature of the upper atmosphere. &#8220;If we don&#8217;t do anything, we will see the impact globally within the next 10 years,&#8221; Minkwan Kim, an associate professor of astronautics at the University of Southampton in the U.K., has <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/montreal-protocol-satellites-air-pollution\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/montreal-protocol-satellites-air-pollution\">told Space.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While these reentries occasionally produce fireballs visible from the ground, most go completely unnoticed.
