Last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/11\/03\/entertainment\/dawsons-creek-alum-james-van-der-beek-diagnosed-with-colorectal-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">actor James Van Der Beek, 47, revealed his own Stage 3 colorectal cancer diagnosis. <\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2819248#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Recent research<\/a>\u00a0found that the most common red flag for colorectal cancer in young people was rectal bleeding, as nearly half of those diagnosed reported blood on their toilet paper or in their toilet bowl.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-tiktok wp-block-embed-tiktok\"\/>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Dr. Raj was quick to note that rectal bleeding is one among <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/25\/lifestyle\/these-6-symptoms-can-indicate-colon-cancer-in-young-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a constellation of other colon cancer symptoms<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou tend to get other symptoms in addition to the bleeding like diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, etcetera,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Many younger people with colorectal cancer are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/colorectalcancer.org\/sites\/default\/files\/media\/documents\/CCAlliance_NeverTooYoung_2020SurveyReport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">misdiagnosed with other things, like hemorrhoids\u00a0or IBS<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Raj urges patients to request a further evaluation if any of these symptoms are present.
