It didn&#8217;t matter if nuts were hulled, dried, roasted, or peeled.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>That sounds like good news, but there are a few caveats. These results were only found in those who are not considered obese, who get a normal amount of sleep, and who do not smoke tobacco, or drink alcohol daily.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>No significant associations were found when only men across all age groups were considered, or in those who report other risk factors, like muscle weakness or feelings of loneliness.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Future long-term follow-up studies, both observational and  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/clinical-trials\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73032\" data-postid=\"142514\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">clinical trials<\/a>, should evaluate the efficacy of nut consumption as a strategy for preventing dementia in adults,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11357-024-01365-z\">write<\/a> researchers from the University of Castilla-La Mancha in Spain.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t the first time that nuts have been linked to brain health. Nuts are energy-dense foods that are rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant nutrients and compounds.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Scientists have, therefore, hypothesized that the properties of nuts could have benefits to brain health, and <a href=\"https:\/\/linkinghub.elsevier.com\/retrieve\/pii\/S1279770723005171\">some epidemiological studies<\/a> certainly suggest that could be the case.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/1028415X.2016.1204744\">12-week randomized controlled trial<\/a>, researchers found that a handful of daily peanuts enhanced short-term memory and verbal fluency in healthy, middle-aged adults who were overweight.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>A few <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2302368\">other clinical trials<\/a>, however, have found no such benefits.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>To clear up the murky results, health researcher Bruno Bizzozero-Peroni and his colleagues at Castilla-La Mancha drew on a cohort from the UK Biobank, enrolled between 2007 and 2012.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Participants were tracked for an average of 7 years. Over the course of the study, the rate of all-cause dementia was 2.8 percent. Those who said they ate 30 grams of nuts a day (equivalent to about a handful) were less likely to fall into that risk category.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The reasons behind that association are unclear. At this point it&#8217;s not clear what leads to different forms of dementia, let alone what is capable of preventing them, and why.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To date, pharmacological treatment for dementia has demonstrated only modest beneficial effects, especially in terms of preventing disease progression,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11357-024-01365-z\">write<\/a> Bizzozero-Peroni and his colleagues.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Still, <a href=\"https:\/\/linkinghub.elsevier.com\/retrieve\/pii\/S0140673620303676\">emerging evidence<\/a> suggests that as many as 40 percent of dementia cases can be prevented or even delayed by modifying certain lifestyle risk factors, like smoking, drinking alcohol, exercising, or social isolation.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Diet seems to be a crucial player. In the past, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/western-diet-identified-as-risk-factor-for-alzheimers-disease-scientists-warn\">several systematic reviews<\/a> have found healthy diets, like the Mediterranean diet, are linked to a reduced risk of dementia. Meanwhile, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/western-diet-identified-as-risk-factor-for-alzheimers-disease-scientists-warn\">Western diet<\/a>, which is high in saturated fat, sugar, and salt, seems to be a risk factor for dementia.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/can-a-healthy-lifestyle-beat-alzheimers-like-documentary-claims\">study<\/a> on 60,000 Britons found that adhering to a Mediterranean diet decreases the risk of dementia by as much as 23 percent.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/can-a-healthy-lifestyle-beat-alzheimers-like-documentary-claims#:~:text=The%20Mediterranean%20diet%20is%20high,of%20dementia%20by%2023%20percent\"\/><\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-spoonful-of-olive-oil-a-day-could-lower-risk-of-dementia-related-death-by-28\">Further research<\/a> revealed that olive oil, a staple of the Mediterranean lifestyle, may specifically lower the risk of dementia-related death by 28 percent.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Those are really promising numbers that need to be studied further, especially since only a quarter of the UK biobank cohort reported regularly eating nuts.<\/p>\n<p>The study was published in <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11357-024-01365-z\"><i>GeroScience<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1660802\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>(function(w,q){w[q]=w[q]||[];w[q].push([\"_mgc.load\"])})(window,\"_mgq\");\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/eating-nuts-linked-to-lower-risk-of-dementia-study-finds\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dementia is proving very difficult to treat with medicine, but perhaps there are secret, brain-boosting ingredients already hiding in our diets.
