We\u2019re using it for <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/04\/lifestyle\/doctor-reveals-6-foods-to-eat-to-optimize-liver-function\/\">fatty liver [disease]<\/a>, high cholesterol, you name it.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Drugs like Ozempic make you feel fuller for longer by mimicking the body\u2019s GLP-1 hormone that\u2019s naturally produced after eating. <span class=\"credit\">millaf \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ozempic, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/08\/lifestyle\/mounjaro-better-than-ozempic-in-combating-obesity-study\/\">Mounjaro<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/13\/lifestyle\/female-wegovy-users-may-have-greatest-weight-loss\/\">Wegovy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/25\/lifestyle\/liraglutide-exercise-key-to-weight-loss-bone-strength-study\/\">Victoza<\/a> and Trulicity are part of a class of diabetes and obesity medications called GLP-1 drugs. They make you feel fuller for longer by mimicking the body\u2019s GLP-1 hormone that\u2019s naturally produced after eating.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the secondary conditions these drugs are being used to treat are related to obesity.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8967417\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Obesity causes low-grade chronic inflammation<\/a>, which is when the body\u2019s natural chemical response to an irritant or injury remains active long after the threat has passed.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>GLP-1s masterfully reduce the amount of inflammation in the body by stimulating weight loss, interacting with immune cells and <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10992717\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blocking the release of cytokines<\/a>, which are proteins that respond to cell damage from injury or infection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCytokines are produced by an excessive number of fat cells in obese people,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drdecotiis.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Sue Decotiis<\/a>, a triple-board certified medical weight loss physician based in Manhattan, explained to The Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCytokines\u00a0modulate \u2018turn on\u2019 problems, such as arthritis and skin diseases, which promote cancer,\u201d Decotiis continued. \u201cBy depleting this fat cell reservoir, the body is helped to return to a healthier state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Decotiis called GLP-1s \u201can exciting category of medications\u201d \u2014 here are some of the conditions they may help treat.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Colorectal cancer<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Adults under 50 are increasingly being diagnosed with colorectal cancer. <span class=\"credit\">ryanking999 \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Alarmed by the rising rates of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/18\/lifestyle\/rising-colorectal-cancer-rates-in-young-people-new-concerns-idd\/\">colorectal cancer in young people<\/a>, an international team of scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/healthcare\/article\/why-is-cancer-surging-among-under-50s-these-scientists-are-investigating-mktfnhm9c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plans to launch human trials<\/a> as early as next year to see if GLP-1 drugs can \u201creverse the molecular signatures that are associated with cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Obesity is linked to an <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/07\/06\/being-overweight-is-linked-to-18-types-of-cancer-new-study\/\">increased risk of 13 types of cancer<\/a>. For example, people who are obese are 1.3 times more likely to develop colorectal cancer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/obesity\/obesity-fact-sheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to the National Cancer Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Obesity, Type 2 diabetes and cancer are associated with insulin resistance \u2014 which is when the body\u2019s cells don\u2019t respond well to insulin, a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar.<\/p>\n<p>GLP-1s stimulate insulin release, improving insulin sensitivity. And besides decreasing inflammation, the meds can increase the function of cancer-fighting natural killer cells, Messer said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[There are] lots of different theories out there, but I think what we know for sure is that [GLP-1s] decrease the risk definitively for colorectal cancer,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Knee pain in\u00a0osteoarthritis<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Osteoarthritis is characterized by joint pain that worsens over time. <span class=\"credit\">manassanant \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Obese knee arthritis sufferers experienced almost a 50% reduction in knee pain after taking Ozempic as part of a study published last month in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2403664\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New England Journal of Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know, clearly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsarthritis.org\/patient-corner\/disease-management\/role-of-body-weight-in-osteoarthritis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weight loss helps<\/a> with [osteoarthritis],\u201d Messer said. \u201cBut they\u2019re saying that it improves osteoarthritis even without the weight loss. There\u2019s certainly an <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3638313\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inflammatory component<\/a> to [osteoarthritis], so I suppose that\u2019s how it\u2019s working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Messer has also seen GLP-1s help her patients with <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/21\/lifestyle\/ozempic-to-treat-arthritis-why-doctors-say-obesity-drugs-could-cure-a-host-of-chronic-illnesses\/\">rheumatoid arthritis<\/a>, a chronic autoimmune disease that causes joint inflammation.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Substance abuse<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Ozempic may be able to influence dopamine levels in the brain to curb cravings for drugs and alcohol. <span class=\"credit\">Anadolu Agency via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cA lot of times, addictive behavior is to give your body a dopamine hit,\u201d Messer said.<\/p>\n<p>GLP-1 drugs may be able to treat <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/17\/lifestyle\/ozempic-may-treat-opioid-and-alcohol-use-disorder-new-study\/\">alcohol and opioid addiction<\/a> by influencing dopamine levels in the brain.<\/p>\n<p>Ozempic users have reported <a href=\"https:\/\/news.vt.edu\/articles\/2024\/01\/research_fralinbiomed_GLPalcohol_0104.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fewer cravings for alcohol<\/a>, drugs and nicotine, along with food.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brain disease<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>GLP-1 drugs may reduce cognitive problems. <span class=\"credit\">LIGHTFIELD STUDIOS \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI have patients already with <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/11\/01\/lifestyle\/wealthy-educated-professionals-have-lower-dementia-risk-study\/\">mild cognitive impairment<\/a> or APOE genes for Alzheimer\u2019s who are taking these medications for preventative purposes,\u201d Messer said about GLP-1s.<\/p>\n<p>One particular variant of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene significantly increases the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/14\/lifestyle\/untreated-high-blood-pressure-linked-to-higher-alzheimers-risk\/\">risk of Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ozempic has shown promise in decreasing inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain, reducing tau proteins and amyloid plaques, which are <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/30\/lifestyle\/accuracy-of-blood-tests-for-alzheimers-disease-varies-study\/\">key markers for dementia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Skin conditions<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Hidradenitis suppurativa is a lesion-causing skin disease that affects at least 1 in 100 people. <span class=\"credit\">@livingwithadisease\/INSTARimages<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/bjd\/article-abstract\/191\/4\/631\/7678935\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Recent research<\/a> found that obese people who took semaglutide \u2014 the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy \u2014 lost weight, reduced inflammation, improved blood sugar and decreased their <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/08\/19\/i-have-incurable-boil-like-bumps-all-over-my-body-haters-think-i-have-herpes\/\">hidradenitis suppurativa<\/a>\u00a0flare-ups.<\/p>\n<p>The lesion-causing skin disease, which is strongly associated with obesity, affects <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hs-awareness.com\/about-hs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at least 1 in 100 people<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re seeing incredible results because of the anti-inflammatory effect,\u201d Messer said. \u201cIn my patients, I see a decrease in <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/18\/psoriasis-sufferer-strips-down-to-show-painful-reality-of-the-skin-disease\/\">psoriasis<\/a>, probably because of the inflammation.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sleep apnea<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Sleep apnea occurs when the throat muscles relax during sleep and repeatedly block the airway. <span class=\"credit\">Hope \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/18\/lifestyle\/lillys-weight-loss-drug-reduces-sleep-apnea-severity-in-late-stage-trials\/\">Research this year<\/a> found that tirzepatide \u2014 the active ingredient in Mounjaro and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/27\/business\/eli-lilly-selling-weight-loss-drug-zepbound-for-50-less\/\">Zepbound<\/a> \u2014 reduced sleep apnea severity by as much as 63% in obese adults with obstructive sleep apnea.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncoa.org\/adviser\/sleep\/sleep-apnea-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">An estimated 39 million US adults<\/a> have the condition, which occurs when the throat muscles relax during sleep and repeatedly block the airway.
