The launch of a possible tariff war by the United States, the biggest trading partner and closest ally of the European Union and Britain, would hammer major industries like automobiles, pharmaceuticals and machinery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And the need to raise military spending because of doubts about America\u2019s guarantees in Europe would further strain national budgets and increase deficits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In addition, the president-elect\u2019s more confrontational attitude toward <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/11\/business\/trump-china-trade-war.html\" title=\"\">China<\/a> could pressure Europe to pick sides or face retribution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cEurope\u2019s worst economic nightmare has come true,\u201d said Carsten Brzeski, chief economist at the Dutch bank ING.
