Meadows has pleaded not guilty and Trump won election to a second term last week.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ejyh64000d3b6mr4bhz063@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meadows wanted to have his case heard in federal \u2013 rather than state \u2013 court, where he would be able to raise immunity claims.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ejzy5x000r3b6mj0xclrzz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Atlanta-based 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled last year that the Georgia prosecution against Meadows should continue in state court, concluding that former federal officials are not covered by that statute \u201cremoving\u201d state cases against government officials to federal court. Importantly, Chief Judge William Pryor\u2019s opinion also said that \u201cthe events giving rise to this criminal action were not related Meadows\u2019s official duties.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ek2f0000103b6mnaqjrwk4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Though Meadows is seeking a different form of immunity than the Supreme Court granted Trump earlier this year, his appeal nevertheless relied heavily on the court\u2019s divisive decision from July. In that decision, the Supreme Court\u2019s conservative majority relied in part on the idea that the president\u2019s power would be hampered if he faced prosecution for his official actions as soon as he ended his term.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ek2gsr00123b6mnykwlq7m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis court reiterated that the threat posed by prosecutions against federal officers for actions relating to their federal functions does not evaporate once they leave federal office,\u201d Meadows\u2019 lawyers told the Supreme Court in their appeal this summer. \u201cA White House Chief of Staff facing criminal charges based on actions relating to his work for the president of the United States should not be a close call.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ek8f1b00193b6m8nggko0j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n             The Supreme Court, however, did not grant immunity for unofficial actions and lower courts found that Meadows\u2019 actions on behalf were not related to his official duties.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ek2axn000x3b6mpxie2zt2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While Meadows\u2019 case raises concerns about \u201cunscrupulous prosecutors\u201d pursuing unfounded prosecutions against former federal officials, prosecutors in Georgia argued that possibility \u201cremains entirely \u2018hypothetical.\u2019\u201d Meadows \u201cassumes that the scenario is inevitable and sure to be widespread, but his references to the overheated words of opinion editorials, cannot suffice to demonstrate that a new era of ubiquitous prosecution of former federal officials is at hand,\u201d they told the high court.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ek8l30001c3b6mb1juhi5w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n             The Georgia case has been at a standstill while an appeals court considers ethics allegations against Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.
