\">\n<p>And now, a new study has linked increased frailty to dementia nine years ahead of its official diagnosis. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3><strong>How did scientists find that out?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>Researchers from The University Of Queensland <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaneurology\/fullarticle\/2826165?guestAccessKey=98020e21-9d5c-44f4-a61a-700fe71d53f6&amp;utm_source=for_the_media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_content=tfl&amp;utm_term=111124\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"looked at international data\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaneurology\/fullarticle\/2826165?guestAccessKey=98020e21-9d5c-44f4-a61a-700fe71d53f6&amp;utm_source=for_the_media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_content=tfl&amp;utm_term=111124\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"published in the medical journal\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"673333afe4b0d36d5d636573\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" rel=\"noopener\">published in the medical journal<\/a> JAMA Neurology, found that frailty (which it defined as \u201cthe accumulation of multiple age-related health deficits and reduced physiological reserve\u201d) appeared and accelerated in the nine years before those who got dementia at the end of the study were diagnosed. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>\u201cOur findings show with every four to five additional health problems there is on average a 40% higher risk of developing dementia, while for people who are fitter the risk is lower,\u201d Dr David Ward, one of the study\u2019s authors, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.racgp.org.au\/newsgp\/clinical\/increased-frailty-linked-to-dementia-onset-study#:~:text=A%20landmark%20international%20study%20from,intervention%20strategies%20could%20reduce%20risk.\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" people who may be more vulnerable to dementia years sooner than they could otherwise.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3><strong>Does being frail mean I could have dementia?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>A lot of dementia studies only find a link and not a cause between things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/nightmares-dementia-risk_uk_67321dd1e4b0231a203b1c58\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"sleep\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"673333afe4b0d36d5d636573\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"67321dd1e4b0231a203b1c58\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"6\">sleep<\/a> and the condition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"primary-cli cli cli-text \">\n<p>The paper didn\u2019t definitively prove frailty is a symptom of dementia, but Dr Ward told <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.racgp.org.au\/newsgp\/clinical\/increased-frailty-linked-to-dementia-onset-study#:~:text=A%20landmark%20international%20study%20from,intervention%20strategies%20could%20reduce%20risk.\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"RACGP\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"673333afe4b0d36d5d636573\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" cli-text \">\n<p>Early diagnosis is really helpful for dementia cases, <a
