Since the start of Vladimir Putin\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Moscow has used a hastily adopted law against spreading \u201cfake\u201d information widely to silence dissent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The high-profile case against Buyanova, born in Lviv, Ukraine, but a longtime resident of Russia, highlights the intensifying repression in Russia as its troops continue the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">In her final statement, a tearful Buyanova insisted on her innocence, asserting that she had not discussed the war with the boy or his mother. Buyanova\u2019s defence argued she had been targeted because of her Ukrainian heritage, noting that prosecutors had no solid evidence to prove she had spoken against the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">There is no audio recording from the consultation room, and prosecutors relied on the testimony of the seven-year-old boy and his mother, Anastasia Akinshina.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Akinshina first made the denunciations against Buyanova in a video that was quickly picked up by pro-Kremlin media. \u201cI won\u2019t let them sweep it up under the carpet!\u201d Akinshina is heard saying in the clip.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The case quickly gained prominence, after which Alexander Bastrykin, the hardline head of Russia\u2019s Investigative Committee, vowed to take it under his personal control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Observers say state \u00adpressure has created an atmosphere of fear and denunciation \u2013 with neighbours, friends and even family members reporting on each other, often \u00adanonymously \u2013 reminiscent of the darkest repressions under Joseph Stalin. One recent poll showed that up to 30% of Russians were scared to voice their opinions about the war, even to friends and family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The case has drawn widespread condemnation from human rights groups, with Memorial, the prominent Russian human rights organisation, listing Buyanova as a political prisoner. A group of Russian doctors wrote an open letter in Buyanova\u2019s defence calling the denunciation a disgrace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">In recent months, the Russian authorities have further cracked down on any expression of anti-war sentiment, resulting in a string of draconian prison sentences. Last Friday a Russian court sentenced a man to 13 years in prison on treason charges after he was reported to have donated the equivalent of about \u00a342 to a German charity supporting Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">His case was similar to that of Ksenia Karelina, a US-Russian citizen who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/article\/2024\/jun\/20\/russian-american-ballerina-trial-ksenia-karelina\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">sentenced<\/a> to 12 years in prison on treason charges for donating \u00a340 to a pro-Ukraine charity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Memorial, now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/dec\/28\/russian-court-memorial-human-rights-group-closure\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">banned<\/a> in Russia, lists nearly 800 political prisoners, many of whom have criticised Russia\u2019s invasion.
