Tatjana Zlatkovic\/Stocksy United<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A new study found that taking vitamin D supplements was associated with lower blood pressure.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>People with obesity and high blood pressure got the best results<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Better calcium regulation may be one of the main reasons for this effect.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Before supplementing with vitamin D, people should get their levels tested.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>According to new <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1210\/jendso\/bvae168\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">research<\/a> published on November 12, 2024, in the <em>Journal of the Endocrine Society<\/em>, supplementation with vitamin D plus calcium may help lower blood pressure in older adults with obesity (body mass index (BMI) greater than 30).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>These supplements appeared to decrease both systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure reading) and <a class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c sl\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/high-blood-pressure-hypertension\/how-to-lower-diastolic-blood-pressure\/\">diastolic blood pressure<\/a> (the bottom number).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>However, they noted that more is not necessarily better when it comes to lowering blood pressure. The effect was independent of the dose administered.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The people who took part in the study had high blood pressure.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Anything greater than a systolic blood pressure of 130 or a diastolic blood pressure of 80 is deemed to be high blood pressure.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>They were all classified as having overweight (BMI greater than 25).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Additionally, they had a serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D level between 10 and 30 ng\/mL. Anything below 30 ng\/mL is considered insufficient, while values less than 20 are classified as <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2665033\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">vitamin D deficiency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Two doses were examined: 600 IU\/day (the Institutes of Medicine\u2019s (IOM) recommended daily dose) and 3,750 IU\/day. Both groups also took 250 mg of <a class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c sl\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/best-calcium-supplement\/\">calcium<\/a> citrate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The study participants were followed for one year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Upon comparing the two groups, they found that the higher dose of vitamin D did not provide greater benefit than the lower one.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>However, both groups experienced a statistically significant drop in blood pressure, with their systolic blood pressure dropping by 3.5 mm Hg and their diastolic blood pressure dropping by 2.8 mm Hg.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The research further found that people with <a class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c sl\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/obesity-facts\/\">obesity<\/a> and low vitamin D status improved their blood pressure the most.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"css-zya54r\"\/><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/glowbarldn.com\/pages\/rimas-geiga-medical-doctor-registered-dietician-clinic-nutritionist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Reimas Geiga, MD<\/a>, a medical doctor, registered dietitian, and clinical nutritionist with Glowbar LDN, explained that vitamin D can affect blood pressure in several ways.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cOne of the primary ways is by aiding in calcium regulation,\u201d he said, \u201cwhich is crucial for the contraction and relaxation of blood vessels. By improving vascular function, vitamin D could help reduce blood pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Additionally, in those with obesity, there is chronic, low-grade inflammation, said Geiga. This can impair blood vessel health, contributing to high blood pressure.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cVitamin D has known anti-inflammatory properties that may help counteract this effect,\u201d he css-1c2ok3c\">ClinicSpots<\/a>, says the first step is determining whether you are actually low in vitamin D.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cA simple blood test can reveal any deficiency that may be contributing to blood pressure issues,\u201d she said. \u201cIf levels are low, supplements or a bit of natural sunlight exposure (when safe) can help improve vitamin D status over
