SoftBank said it will use the<strong> <\/strong>Blackwell-powered computer for generative AI development and as a resource for research institutions and companies across the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Together we&#8217;re going to build Japan&#8217;s largest AI factory,&#8221; Nvidia&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/nvidia-jensen-huang-chipmaker-cofounder-ceo-wealth-net-worth-ai-2023-5\" data-analytics-product-module=\"body_link\" rel=\"noopener\">CEO Jensen Huang <\/a>said at the company&#8217;s AI summit in Tokyo on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Excluded mobile ad on desktop --><\/p>\n<p>The two companies also announced deals to provide AI services on 5G networks and to create an AI marketplace for local compute.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement highlights Japan&#8217;s efforts to reclaim its place as a tech and innovation hub amid <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/asia.nikkei.com\/Opinion\/Japan-s-cautious-approach-to-AI-may-pay-dividends\" data-analytics-product-module=\"body_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">lagging AI adoption<\/a>. AI is an especially big opportunity for Japan as it struggles with an aging society, <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/japan-struggles-four-day-workweek-culture-overwork-panasonic-worker-shortage-2024-9\" data-analytics-product-module=\"body_link\" rel=\"noopener\">labor shortages, and overwork<\/a>. In a statement, Nvidia said the supercomputer will help accelerate Japan&#8217;s plans to adopt AI in telecommunications, robotics, and <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/nvidia-bring-ai-robots-to-hospital-2024-10\" data-analytics-product-module=\"body_link\" rel=\"noopener\">healthcare<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The partnership comes amid <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/aws-negotiating-huge-cloud-deal-supply-ibm-with-nvidia-gpus-2024-11\" data-analytics-product-module=\"body_link\" rel=\"noopener\">skyrocketing demand<\/a> for Nvidia&#8217;s chips as companies and countries scramble to secure supplies to improve their AI capabilities. As one of the few players in this space, Nvidia has a stronghold on anyone looking to accelerate their business or economy using AI models.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Excluded mobile ad on desktop --><\/p>\n<p>In August, Nvidia sparked worries that Blackwell chips would be delayed by two to three months, pushing shipments to the first quarter of 2025 instead of later this year. The delay would affect customers including <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/nvidia-big-tech-earnings-week-early-winner-ai-microsoft-2024-7\" data-analytics-product-module=\"body_link\"><u>Meta, Microsoft, Google<\/u><\/a>, and smaller cloud firms. <span>On an August earnings call, Huang promised that the company would ship out billions of dollars worth of Blackwell GPUs by the fourth quarter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With the world&#8217;s biggest companies on Nvidia&#8217;s customer list, SoftBank&#8217;s procurement of the first Blackwell platform reflects Huang&#8217;s relationship with the Japanese investor and its billionaire founder, <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/masayoshi-son-softbank-gambling-man-lionel-barber-technology-2024-9\" data-analytics-product-module=\"body_link\" rel=\"noopener\">Masayoshi Son.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Son was an early investor in Jack Ma&#8217;s Alibaba and acquired European chipmaker Arm for $32 billion in 2016. He&#8217;s going <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/softbank-masayoshi-son-jack-ma-bet-ai-2024-2\" data-analytics-product-module=\"body_link\" rel=\"noopener\">all-in on AI<\/a>, with investments across the world \u2014 including <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/softbank-results-profit-masayoshi-son-ai-bets-ipo-vision-fund-2024-11\" data-analytics-product-module=\"body_link\" rel=\"noopener\">in OpenAI<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Excluded mobile ad on desktop --><\/p>\n<p>During the summit, Huang laughed with and hugged Son.
