It\u2019s a trend that puts countries farther from their goal of stopping global warming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The increase was not uniform across the globe. Emissions will most likely decline this year in the United States and Europe, and fossil fuel use in China slowed. Yet that was offset by a surge in carbon dioxide from India and the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The findings were made public early on Wednesday at the United Nations climate change summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, where diplomats and world leaders have gathered to discuss <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/12\/climate\/climate-finance-cop29.html\" title=\"\">how to raise trillions of dollars<\/a> to cope with rising global temperatures. Those talks <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/11\/climate\/cop29-climate-baku-azerbaijan.html\" title=\"\">have already been jolted<\/a> by the election of Donald J. Trump and the expectation that the United States will soon retreat from the fight against global warming.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some experts had previously suggested that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/24\/climate\/international-energy-agency-peak-demand.html\" title=\"\">global emissions could peak sometime this decade<\/a> because of the rapid spread of solar panels, wind turbines and electric vehicles. But so far, those technologies have only partly satisfied the world\u2019s steadily growing demand for energy.
