federal jury on Tuesday awarded a total of $42 million to three Iraqi men who endured torture at Baghdad\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/10\/30\/world\/meast\/iraq-prison-abuse-scandal-fast-facts\/index.html\">Abu Ghraib prison<\/a> over two decades ago \u2013\u2013 holding a US government contractor accountable for contributing to<strong> <\/strong>the abuse.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3fjplhw00033b6mjjds4e34@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The ruling stems from a lawsuit filed on behalf of <a href=\"https:\/\/ccrjustice.org\/AlShimari\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">former detainees<\/a> in 2008 against Virginia-based defense company CACI Premier Technology Inc., according to a press release from the Center for Constitutional Rights \u2013 the organization representing the plaintiffs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3frx7in00033b6mj41je78a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The plaintiffs alleged the company was hired by the US government following the US invasion of Iraq to provide interrogation services at Abu Ghraib, a US Army detention facility where Iraqi detainees were brutally tortured.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3fjplhw00043b6mqj4lrrnr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The plaintiffs, Suhail Al Shimari, a middle school principal, Asa\u2019ad Zuba\u2019e, a fruit vendor, and Salah Al-Ejaili, a journalist, each received $3 million in compensatory damages and $11 million in punitive damages, according to the release and court documents.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3fjplhw00053b6m93dfacz0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe victory isn\u2019t only for the three plaintiffs in this case against a corporation,\u201d Al-Ejaili said in the release. \u201cThe victory is a shining light for everyone who has been oppressed, and a strong warning to any company or contractor practicing different forms of torture or abuse.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3fjplhw00063b6mnpyolc3n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Plaintiffs alleged that CACI breached international law by deploying guards who tortured prisoners, according to the release.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3fjplhw00073b6mx3kzo44p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over 16 years, the company attempted to have the case dismissed more than 20 times before it was first brought to trial in April. The company\u2019s lawyer blamed instances of abuse on US military police who he labeled as \u201ca handful of bad apples\u201d during opening statements at the time.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3fjplhw00083b6mjtocy8qn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The case was retried in recent weeks after the jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision earlier this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3fjplhw00093b6mya6alapd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            CNN has reached out to CACI for comment.
