He was 84.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gk717a00073b5vikcm21oe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The law firm Gibson Dunn, where Olson practiced since 1965, announced his death on its website. No cause of death was given.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gk717a00083b5vq0q38f5z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Olson was at the center of some of the biggest cases of recent decades, including a win on behalf of George W. Bush in the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/today-in-history\/december-13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2000 Florida presidential election<\/a> recount dispute that went before the Supreme Court.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gk717a00093b5v7yzlyc7k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEven in a town full of lawyers, Ted\u2019s career as a litigator was particularly prolific,\u201d said Mitch McConnell, the longtime Senate Republican leader. \u201cMore importantly, I count myself among so many in Washington who knew Ted as a good and decent man.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gk717a000a3b5v28svvk0z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bush made Olson his solicitor general, a post the lawyer held from 2001 to 2004. Olson had previously served in the Justice Department as an assistant attorney general during President Ronald Reagan\u2019s first term in the early 1980s.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gk717a000b3b5vm89kom8a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During his career, Olson argued 65 cases before the Supreme Court, according to Gibson Dunn.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gk717a000c3b5vj62lreu3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey weren\u2019t just little cases,\u201d said Theodore Boutrous, a partner at the law firm who worked with Olson for 37 years. \u201cMany of them were big, blockbuster cases that helped shape our society.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gk717a000d3b5vksyfbbde@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those included <em>Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission<\/em>, a 2010 case that eliminated many limits on political giving, and a successful challenge to the Trump administration\u2019s decision to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gk717a000e3b5vxuhrx3nx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHe\u2019s the greatest lawyer I\u2019ve ever worked with or seen in action,\u201d said Boutrous, who worked so closely with Olson that they were known at Gibson Dunn as \u201cthe two Teds.\u201d \u201cHe was an entertaining and forceful advocate who could go toe-to-toe with the Supreme Court justices in a way few lawyers could. They respected him so much.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gk717a000f3b5vyx0swucx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One of Olson\u2019s most prominent cases put him at odds with many fellow conservatives. After California adopted a ban on same-sex marriage in 2008, Olson joined <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/movies-general-news-9aa4f952739845eab51a29129d729397\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forces with former adversary<\/a> David Boies, who had represented Democrat Al Gore in the presidential election case, to represent California couples seeking the right to marry.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gk717a000g3b5vookg7kig@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During closing arguments, Olson contended that tradition or fears of harm to heterosexual unions were legally insufficient grounds to discriminate against same-sex couples.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gk717a000h3b5vcsifx6uh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt is the right of individuals, not an indulgence to be dispensed by the state,\u201d Olson said. \u201cThe right to marry, to choose to marry, has never been tied to procreation.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gk717a000i3b5vpz18b2la@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A federal judge in California ruled in 2010 that the state\u2019s ban violated the Constitution. Few people are a hero to those that know them well. Ted was a hero to those who knew him best.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gk717a000n3b5v8wbmym20@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Olson\u2019s personal life also intersected tragically with the nation\u2019s history when his third wife, well-known conservative legal analyst Barbara Olson, died on September 11, 2001.
