Months before Trump\u2019s reelection, the Tesla CEO and Trump megadonor was riffing on X (formerly Twitter) about a possible administration role in something he called the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1831837670265516406\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Government Efficiency<\/a>, or DOGE. On Tuesday, the president-elect announced he was making that dream a reality, appointing Musk, along with businessman and failed presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, to lead <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/11\/12\/g-s1-33972\/trump-elon-red-vivek-ramaswamy-doge-government-efficiency-deep-state\" target=\"_blank\">an agency of that very name<\/a>, which would \u201cpave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWith that action, Trump turned a more than decade-old meme into a bizarre and powerfully consequential reality for U.S. politics. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tBy internet standards, \u201cdoge\u201d is an ancient artifact. In 2013, photos of Kabosu, a female Shiba Inu owned by a Japanese kindergarten teacher, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2013\/12\/31\/24164199\/doge-meme-rescue-dog-wow\" target=\"_blank\">started going viral on Reddit<\/a>, typically with rainbow Comic Sans text that suggested the inner monologue of the dog \u2014 or \u201cdoge,\u201d as a playful misspelling had it.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"a-cryptocurrency-is-born\" class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-primary-l   \">\n\t\tA cryptocurrency is born \t<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThat same year, two software designers had the idea to parody bitcoin, then gaining traction as the first decentralized cryptocurrency, with a joke coin that would feature the doge meme as its logo: Dogecoin, with the market code DOGE. Despite their satirical intentions, the currency found a dedicated community, which outlived the popularity of the cutesy meme itself, although it long traded at well under a cent. Still, the crypto bubble of 2017-2018 saw a surge in trading and drove the value of the coin to a new peak, and by 2019, Musk himself was tweeting about it. \u201cDogecoin might be my fav cryptocurrency,\u201d he <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1113009339743100929?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">posted<\/a> that April. \u201cIt\u2019s pretty cool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tFrom that point forward, Dogecoin\u2019s fluctuations were unmistakably entangled with Musk\u2019s comments on it. He holds an unspecified amount of the cryptocurrency \u2014 with some <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/watcher.guru\/news\/dogecoin-how-much-doge-does-elon-musk-have#:~:text=When%20he%20says%20that%20he,the%20total%20DOGE%20in%20circulation.\" target=\"_blank\">even speculating<\/a> that he\u2019s a \u201cwhale\u201d who has bought up a huge percentage of the total coins in circulation \u2014 and routinely interacts with its main promoters online. The summer of 2020 saw another DOGE buying spree, encouraged by TikTok hype, but the coin really exploded during the GameStop \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-features\/gamestop-reddit-robinhood-hedge-fund-populism-1120713\/\">meme stock<\/a>\u201d craze of January 2021. Encouraged by tweets and memes from Musk (as well as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/markets\/2021\/02\/07\/dogecoin-smokes-its-all-time-high-after-snoop-dogg-becomes-snoop-doge\/\" target=\"_blank\">Snoop Dogg and Gene Simmons<\/a>), investors pushed it to a new high of $0.08 that February. Musk <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1357241340313141249\" target=\"_blank\">declared<\/a> it \u201cthe people\u2019s crypto.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt continued to surge through April and hit an all-time high of $0.74 in May 2021, when Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-news\/chloe-fineman-elon-musk-snl-host-cry-1235162955\/\">hosted an episode<\/a> of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/saturday-night-live\/\">Saturday Night Live<\/a><\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-news\/snl-elon-musk-dogecoin-cryptocurrency-weekend-update-1167142\/\">hawked the currency<\/a> on Weekend Update \u2014 while admitting that crypto was a \u201chustle.\u201d The price of Dogecoin fell significantly during and after the show. The same week, Musk announced that SpaceX would fund a moon mission entirely with Dogecoin. (That launch has been indefinitely delayed.) Musk continued to spam Twitter with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1410519466518233089\" target=\"_blank\">Dogecoin memes<\/a> and inane posts related to the currency, once <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1410529698497630212\" target=\"_blank\">typing out the lyrics<\/a> to the children\u2019s song \u201cBaby Shark\u201d as \u201cBaby Doge, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo.\u201d He also indicated that he had <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1359519541219500033\" target=\"_blank\">purchased some DOGE<\/a> for his young son, X \u00c6 A-Xii, and hinted that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/tesla\/\">Tesla<\/a> might start <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1392030108274159619\" target=\"_blank\">accepting the currency<\/a> \u2014 it eventually did, though only for merchandise, and the option was later discontinued. Tesla has yet to accept payment for a car in Dogecoin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAfter Dogecoin fell back to earth, hitting $0.07 in June 2022, Musk faced a lawsuit for $258 billion from investors who accused him of orchestrating a pyramid scheme by manipulating the price with his tweets, public comments, and the <em>SNL<\/em> appearance, arguing that these all contributed to a 36,000 percent increase in price before the crash. This complaint was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2023\/jun\/01\/elon-musk-insider-trading-dogecoin-lawsuit\" target=\"_blank\">amended several times<\/a> in the following years to account for other Musk stunts \u2014 including the time in April 2023, when, as the new owner of Twitter, he briefly changed the site\u2019s bird logo to the most recognized photo of the \u201cdoge\u201d Shiba Inu. That little joke sent Dogecoin <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/04\/03\/dogecoin-jumps-over-30percent-after-twitter-changes-logo-to-doges-symbol.html\" target=\"_blank\">30 percent higher<\/a>. He happened to be aligned with major crypto evangelists, who backed Trump in the belief that he would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/trump-crypto-billionaires-buying-washington-1235068940\/\">loosen regulations on the industry<\/a>. It was at this critical point in the campaign that a Dogecoin enthusiast suggested on X that Musk\u2019s role under a Trump administration should be in the \u201cDepartment of Government Efficiency (DOGE).\u201d Musk <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1825713824785379477\" target=\"_blank\">replied<\/a>, \u201cThat is the perfect name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tIt appears the Trump team agreed, or at least acquiesced to the request as they began preparations to assume the White House. Following the election, Dogecoin predictably spiked again \u2014 along with other crypto assets \u2014 climbing from $0.15 before Trump\u2019s win to as high as $0.44 when the DOGE agency became official on Tuesday morning. Musk has expressed his own enthusiasm about the \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1856504428913705061\" target=\"_blank\">merch<\/a>\u201d DOGE will sell and vowed: \u201cAll actions of the Department of Government Efficiency will be posted online for maximum transparency.\u201d Given his record of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-lists\/elon-musk-twitter-zuckerberg-lies-1234808808\/\">broken promises<\/a>, this one seems unlikely to be fulfilled. Musk previously declared that major changes to the X platform would <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1604616863673208832\" target=\"_blank\">always be voted on<\/a> by users, only to do away with such polls and push whatever updates he wanted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe silliness of the doge meme, and the cult cryptocurrency it spawned, belies the potential damage Musk\u2019s Department of Government Efficiency could wreak on the political infrastructure of the U.S. Musk has spoken publicly about wanting to massively slash federal spending, admitting this would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/musk-trump-win-hardship-americans-super-pac-2024-election-1235144449\/\">\u201cinvolve some temporary hardship.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhile some observers have suggested that Trump is giving Musk a meaningless commission \u2014 or busywork that he cannot screw up \u2014 the world\u2019s richest man has been participating in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/11\/13\/elon-musk-trump-house-republicans.html\" target=\"_blank\">key meetings<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/11\/politics\/video\/elon-musk-joins-trumps-call-with-zelensky\" target=\"_blank\">diplomatic phone calls<\/a> alongside Trump since Election Day. This, in turn, is spurring a cryptocurrency boom that could cost investors tens of thousands of dollars if it turns into another bubble.
