It was the first of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/13\/politics\/trump-picks-tulsi-gabbard-director-of-national-intelligence\/index.html\">several Cabinet picks<\/a> made this week that Trump allies and adversaries alike described as \u201cshocking\u201d \u2013 all signs that the president-elect intends to rattle all branches of the federal government in his second term \u2013 including the military.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb00073b6mxi2b9hw0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hegseth\u2019s unconventional background for such a pivotal national security role means he could face a difficult confirmation process in the Senate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb00083b6mmw3i0l5e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While Hegseth has commented on several hot-topic foreign policy issues, including competition with China and the war in Ukraine, he has largely fashioned himself as a crusader against what many on the right perceive as the politicization of the military.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb00093b6mwptjfz50@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A Princeton and Harvard grad, Hegseth was CEO of the conservative veteran\u2019s advocacy organization, Concerned Veterans for America, beginning in 2006. He joined Fox News as a contributor in 2014 and was named co-host of \u201cFox and Friends Weekend\u201d in 2017, according to the network.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000a3b6mtbxfqdsp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He has 20 years\u2019 experience in the military, having served in the Army National Guard as an infantry officer from 2002 to 2021 and leaving service as a major, according to military service records. He served an 11-month combat tour in Iraq from September 2006 to July 2006 and an eight-month tour in Afghanistan that began in May 2011. He also worked as a guard at the US military base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, from June 2004 to April 2005.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000b3b6mvj29dham@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hegseth has been awarded two Bronze Stars from his combat service.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000c3b6mt7qb19na@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Trump\u2019s pick is also in for what could be a contentious confirmation fight as he faces criticism for lacking experience to lead a government department that includes millions of service members and civilians and a budget over $800 billion. Current and former defense officials, and several Republican senators, expressed surprise at Hegseth\u2019s selection after he was announced on Tuesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000d3b6m52hi3hd8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHe is the\u202fleast qualified\u202fperson in history of the job,\u201d said a former Pentagon official from the Trump administration.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000e3b6mkeenmx7d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many of Trump\u2019s Republican allies in Congress, however, have defended the president-elect\u2019s pick, and some conservatives have argued that a defense secretary like Hegseth is needed to shake up the Defense Department.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000f3b6m3662hfd6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere is a rot in the Pentagon that is deeply entrenched. It requires an unconventional pick, youthful energy, and a keen understanding of Congress and Washington to refocus itself back to the national defense of the United States,\u201d John Noonan, a former Armed Services Committee congressional aide, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/pete-hegseth-is-a-disruptive-choice-for-secretary-of-defense-thats-a-good-thing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote in the conservative National Review<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000h3b6md7etojsv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In various podcasts and interviews, as well as his most recent book published earlier this year called, \u201cThe War on Warriors: Behind the Betrayal of the Men Who Keep Us Free,\u201d one of Hegseth\u2019s biggest claims has been that senior leadership has allowed the politicization of an apolitical force.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000i3b6mo8texu6w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hegseth told radio host Hugh Hewitt in June that he believes roughly a third of the military\u2019s most senior officers are \u201cactively complicit\u201d in the politicization of the US military. Speaking about his new book,\u202fHegseth\u202frailed against what he described as \u201cwoke, CRT, DEI things, gender stuff\u201d that has \u201cseeped into\u201d the military.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000j3b6mqmjds4jf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI would say over a third are actively complicit, and then you have a lot of grumblers who are sort of going along, trying to resist the nonsense as much as they can, but they\u2019re not fundamentally changing it,\u201d he said. As of 2023, there were roughly 800 general and flag officers in the US military.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000k3b6mehuh1dk0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Just last week, he echoed much of the same complaints in an interview on a podcast hosted by Shawn Ryan, a former Navy SEAL, saying one of the first actions the Trump administration should take is to fire the Joint Chiefs chairman.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000l3b6mcaqnb015@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWell first of all you\u2019ve got to fire the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and you\u2019ve got to fire \u2014\u202fI mean obviously you\u2019ve got to bring in a new Secretary of Defense, but any general that was involved \u2014 general, admiral, whatever \u2014 that was involved in any of the DEI woke shit has got to go,\u201d Hegseth said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000m3b6mcdfo9j97@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Brown became Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 2023 after serving as the Air Force Chief of Staff \u2014\u202fa position he was nominated for by then-President Trump. Brown, the first Black man to serve as the Air Force chief, has been a target of conservatives before due to perceptions that he is \u201cwoke\u201d or political.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000n3b6msa62n2xy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Barring Trump taking any action against him, Brown is set to serve as the chairman until 2027.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000o3b6mw0eccxqb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Senior officers in the military, Hegseth also said in the podcast, are \u201cplaying by all the wrong rules\u201d to cater to \u201cidealogues in Washington, DC.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000p3b6m1fq24s92@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAnd so they\u2019ll do any social justice, gender, climate, extremism crap because it gets them checked to the next level,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000r3b6m1ivoh2gu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On multiple occasions, Hegseth has lambasted the Obama-era decision to open up all combat jobs in the military to women, saying it has lowered the military\u2019s standards, made units less effective, and overall made the military less lethal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000s3b6m1hw0ta1z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWomen shouldn\u2019t be in combat at all. They\u2019re life-givers, not life-takers. I know a lot of wonderful soldiers, female soldiers, who have served, who are great. But they shouldn\u2019t be in my infantry battalion,\u201d Hegseth said in an interview with conservative commentator Ben Shapiro in June.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000t3b6m8g7nv1do@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Asked just last week if he doesn\u2019t \u201clike women in combat,\u201d Hegseth responded, \u201cNo \u2026 because everything about men and women serving together makes the situation more complicated, and complication in combat means casualties or worse.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000u3b6mp68ltv6l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Women serve in combat jobs across the military services and have successfully completed some of the military\u2019s most grueling training courses. More than 140 women have finished Army Ranger School, and in 2020, a woman joined the ranks of Army Special Forces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/07\/10\/us\/us-army-green-berets-first-woman-trnd\/index.html\">for the first time<\/a> after completing the Army\u2019s Special Forces Qualification Course. In 2021, a woman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/07\/15\/politics\/woman-navy-special-warfare\/index.html\">qualified<\/a> to join Naval Special Warfare Command for the first time.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gpph7300003b6me7urkohb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a statement on Wednesday, the CEO of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America Allison Jaslow \u2014 an Iraq War veteran herself \u2014 said that not only have women \u201cbeen in combat for some time, but many are tougher than many of their male counterparts.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gprle000053b6mqbs7mjkl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNeed proof? Look at the women who\u2019ve graduated from Ranger School, which is so grueling that around half of the men who enter it fail out,\u201d Jaslow said. \u201cThose women deserve a Secretary of Defense who is aware of that reality and also ensures that the culture in the military embraces that reality.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000v3b6mzjtxn0bf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hegseth has also railed against the Pentagon\u2019s policies toward transgender troops. Trump in his first term sought to ban transgender service members \u2013 a move that was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/01\/25\/politics\/lloyd-austin-transgender-military-harris-biden\/index.html\">repealed<\/a> by the Biden administration just days after taking office.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000w3b6m7jbxwfup@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf you\u2019re medically dependent on drugs to maintain your gender or a particular balance of chemicals inside your body, you\u2019re by definition non-deployable \u2026 Something like that should be banned on day one in a Trump administration,\u201d he said on the Shawn Ryan Show last week.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000y3b6mhjn2maxu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hegseth \u2013 who described himself as a \u201crecovering neocon\u201d after originally supporting the Iraq War \u2013 does not have a long record on policy questions like China and Ukraine, but he\u2019s disclosed some of his views through his Fox News show and other interviews.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb000z3b6m0cwjqc9x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In one June interview on Fox, Hegseth bemoaned the state of the US military\u2019s procurement system and the threat posed by China\u2019s growing military.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb00103b6mkpf9a2oi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cChina is building a miliary built to defeat the United States. The United States right now has a military mostly focused on fighting the last war,\u201d Hegseth said on \u201cFox and Friends.\u2019 \u201cOur procurement system is antiquated, so we get weapons systems years after they\u2019ve already been surpassed by the next generation of technology.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb00113b6m77fo0thn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hegseth described Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine as Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s \u201cgive me my sh*t back\u201d war in his interview with Ryan, saying that he thought the threat of a nuclear war was over-inflated. Hegseth cautioned against \u201cAmerican intervention\u201d with Ukraine pushing Putin into nuclear war, but also expressed skepticism that Russia\u2019s expansion aims would extend deeper into eastern Europe \u2013 something the current Pentagon and other foreign allies and partners have aggressively warned against since Russia\u2019s 2022 invasion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb00123b6mgnhrga2p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis idea that I hear all the time \u2026 if you don\u2019t stop him in Ukraine then he\u2019s going to go all the way to Poland,\u201d Hegseth said. \u201cI mean maybe in a perfect world where he had unlimited capabilities and he could crown himself King of Europe he would. I think he probably knows enough to know that \u2013 probably not going much further than Ukraine.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb00143b6m9skrjsuo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/05\/21\/media\/fox-news-pete-hegseth-trump-pardon-war-crimes\/index.html\">CNN reported in 2019<\/a> that Hegseth, while working at Fox News, privately encouraged Trump to pardon some United States servicemen accused of war crimes. Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/11\/15\/politics\/trump-war-crimes-intervenes\/index.html\">went on to pardon<\/a> two service members \u2013 Army Maj. Matthew Golsteyn and 1st Lt. Clint Lorance \u2013 and restore the rank of Navy SEAL <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/07\/03\/politics\/eddie-gallagher-navy-seal-trial-sentence\/index.html\">Eddie Gallagher<\/a>, who had been demoted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb00153b6m3de6ereh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The controversial move went\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/11\/15\/politics\/trump-war-crimes-intervenes\/index.html\">against the advice<\/a>\u202fof then-Defense Secretary Mark Esper and other senior military leaders, who had told Trump that a presidential pardon could potentially damage the integrity of the military judicial system. But defenders of Gallagher and other service members accused or convicted of war crimes have defended Trump\u2019s move as having the backs of military warfighters who are simply doing the dirty work others won\u2019t.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb00163b6mk5dboh21@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe sent them to do these really dangerous, dirty, difficult things that no one else would do, and then sort of like the line from A Few Good Men, and then we challenge the manner in which they do it,\u201d Hegseth said last week in the interview with Ryan, pointing specifically to the cases of Gallagher, Golsteyn, and Lorance.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb00173b6myv7f6l00@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Before Trump\u2019s pardons, Golsteyn was charged with the 2010 murder of an Afghan civilian, to which he pleaded not guilty, and Lorance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/11\/13\/politics\/clint-lorance-release-trump-mark-esper-war-crimes\/index.html\">was found guilty<\/a> of second-degree murder for ordering his troops to fire on three men on a motorcycle in Afghanistan.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gprks900033b6mq48p33n8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jaslow harshly criticized Hegseth\u2019s position on Wednesday, saying such advocacy on behalf of service members convicted of war crimes should be disqualifying.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gprx4p000a3b6muen84nez@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe active lobbying to pardon convicted war criminals can and should disqualify Pete Hegseth from being Secretary of Defense over any other criticism that may be brought against him, and I hope the United States Senate understands that as they consider his nomination,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb00183b6m7i3m8q94@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In his conversation last week, Hegseth and Ryan discussed a Trump administration creating \u201ca team \u2026 of these guys that have been through what we\u2019re talking about,\u201d that would \u201cknow who to go after.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb00193b6mf6szbf90@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hegseth seemed to agree, laughing and nodding as Ryan explained his idea, suggesting that the group also include Tim Parlatore, Gallagher\u2019s lawyer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3gj73fb001a3b6m0bqu6g5g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou have to start with people who can say, \u2018OK, I know who the political animals were in those places,\u2019 because that\u2019s the challenge of a new administration,\u201d Hegseth said. \u201cEveryone\u2019s going to jump up and down and say, \u2018I was this, or I was never really for that,\u2019 because they want to preserve their careers.
