And <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-inflation-tariffs-taxes-immigration-federal-reserve-a18de763fcc01557258c7f33cab375ed\">many economists think<\/a><\/span> Trump\u2019s plans, including putting <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-day-1-priorities-deportations-drilling-ukraine-6747c6e64b0440978f59450b928f61d1\">tariffs on imported foods<\/a><\/span> and deporting undocumented workers, could actually make food prices rise.<\/p>\n<p>As of October, U.S. prices for food eaten at home were up 28% from 2019, according to <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/inflation-prices-interest-rates-economy-federal-reserve-8ee9d1e7979319fe9ae121c7c8d6d68b\">government figures released<\/a><\/span> Wednesday. But the growth <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/inflation-prices-interest-rates-economy-federal-reserve-f8de2672173407d3a126cc13493fed85\">peaked in 2022<\/a><\/span>; between October 2023 and October 2024, food prices rose 2%, which was lower than the overall inflation rate. <\/p>\n<p>Supermarket sticker shock nevertheless weighed on the U.S. electorate. <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ap-votecast-trump-harris-election-president-voters-86225516e8424431ab1d19e57a74f198\">About 7 in 10 voters<\/a><\/span> &#8212; including 70% of women and 63% of men &#8212; said they were very concerned about the cost of food and groceries, according to AP VoteCast, a survey of more than 120,000 voters. Only 1 in 10 said they were not too concerned or not at all concerned.<\/p>\n<p>Trump won decisively among voters who said they were \u201cvery\u201d concerned. Around 6 in 10 voters in that group supported him, while 4 in 10 supported Vice President Kamala Harris, <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/harris-economy-ceos-trump-rule-of-law-tariffs-2dd224c63fb4dae47438b6599cc5a968\">his Democratic rival<\/a><\/span>. Harris won strong majorities of voters who were somewhat concerned, <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/economy-consumers-inflation-retail-spending-growth-wealth-be68f97bba5970ed4ce4fc8b8c7333af\">not too concerned<\/a><\/span> or not at all concerned. <\/p>\n<p>Asked how he would lower grocery prices during a September <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-harris-election-campaigning-assassination-attempt-400c592c567d330d995f8dd6633dc782\">town hall in Michigan<\/a><\/span>, Trump said tariffs would help U.S. farmers. Trump has called for a <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tariffs-trump-taxes-imports-inflation-consumers-prices-c2eef295a078a76ce2bb7fedb0c5e58c\">60% tariff on products made in China<\/a><\/span> and a \u201cuniversal\u2019\u2019 tariff of 10% to 20% on all other foreign goods that enter the United States. In some speeches, he mentioned even higher percentages.<\/p>\n<p>Trump said U.S. farmers were getting \u201cdecimated\u201d because the U.S. allows so many agricultural products into the country. As of 2021, the U.S. imported 60% of its fresh fruit, 38% of its fresh vegetables \u2014 excluding potatoes and mushrooms \u2014 and 10% of its beef, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to have to be a little bit like other countries,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re not going to allow so much come. We\u2019re going to let our farmers go to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But David Ortega, a professor of food economics and policy at Michigan State University, said that food producers rely on imported goods like fertilizer, equipment and packaging materials. If they\u2019re forced to pay more for those items, they will raise prices, Ortega said. <\/p>\n<p>U.S. farmers also could have trouble selling their goods overseas, since other countries would likely respond with retaliatory tariffs, he said. Around 20% of U.S. agricultural production is exported each year, according to the USDA.<\/p>\n<p>The American Farm Bureau did not respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press. The Consumer Brands Association, which represents big food companies like Coca-Cola and Nestle as well as personal care companies like Procter &amp; Gamble, says many of its members need ingredients that are grown outside the U.S., like coffee, bananas and chocolate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a fundamental disconnect between a stated goal of reducing grocery prices and tariff policy that only stands to increase those costs,\u201d said Tom Madrecki, the association\u2019s vice president of campaigns and special projects.<\/p>\n<p>Ortega said Trump\u2019s plans to deport <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-immigration-border-asylum-mass-deportation-a681c4980ef25e2b3a7ae670c9094f4a\">people who are in the U.S. illegally<\/a><\/span> could also drive up grocery prices. There are more than 2 million undocumented workers throughout the U.S. food chain, he said, including an estimated 1 million working on farms, 750,000 working in restaurants and 200,000 in food production.<\/p>\n<p>At the Michigan town hall, Trump said lowering energy costs by increasing oil and gas drilling would also lower food prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you make doughnuts, if you make cars, whatever you make, energy is a big deal, and we\u2019re going to get that. It\u2019s my ambition to get your energy bill within 12 months down 50%,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Energy makes up a relatively small portion of the cost of food production and sales. For every $1 spent on food in 2022, a little less than 4 cents went toward energy costs, according to the USDA. Farm production cost 8 cents, while food processing cost 14 cents.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph Glauber, a senior research fellow with the International Food Policy Research Institute, said energy prices are important, but they have already <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/inflation-prices-election-federal-reserve-rates-economy-e4ff4b6745ea1c8badd6a0502f372f25\">come down significantly<\/a><\/span> over the past year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it would be difficult for the Trump administration to have much impact on energy prices in the short run,\u201d Glauber said.<\/p>\n<p>When asked whether <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/donald-trump-wins-second-term-policies-de3dcf0f173b42602b258042fd7aaafb\">Trump had plans<\/a><\/span> beyond energy and tariffs to lower grocery costs, a spokesperson for his transition team didn\u2019t give further details.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe American people re-elected President Trump by a resounding margin, giving him a mandate to implement the promises he made on the campaign trail. He will deliver,\u201d Karoline Leavitt said.<\/p>\n<p>Maria Kalaitzandonakes, an assistant professor of agricultural and consumer economics at the University of Illinois, said her research shows that most voters think politicians can bring down grocery prices.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan Voigt, 34, a single parent of two toddlers, said she is currently living with her parents near Asheville, North Carolina, because the cost of fuel and groceries has gotten so high.<\/p>\n<p>Voigt said she voted for Trump, in part, because she believes he\u2019s a businessman who can lower prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe doesn\u2019t just say, \u2018Oh, this is how much this is costing, the American people have to take it.\u2019 I appreciate that,\u201d Voigt said during a gathering on election night. \u201cHe stands up and goes, \u2018Nope, the American people aren\u2019t going to pay that.\u2019 And he\u2019s like, \u2018You\u2019re going to have to figure out a way to make that cheaper.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Ortega and other economists say there\u2019s very little a president can do, especially in the short term, to lower grocery prices.
