(Video: National Geographic Pristine Seas)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">When researchers first saw a colossal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/extreme-weather\/great-barrier-reef-hottest-ocean-temps-400-years-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coral<\/a> estimated to be hundreds of years old off the Solomon Islands, they thought it was a possible shipwreck.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The National Geographic Society\u2019s Pristine Seas expedition announced on Wednesday that the object was no shipwreck but possibly the largest known coral in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">world<\/a>. It spanned a circumference of 600 feet, larger than five tennis courts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">According to the group, this massive coral in the southwestern Pacific <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/ocean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ocean<\/a> is so large that it&#8217;s visible from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">space<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/extreme-weather\/great-barrier-reef-hottest-ocean-temps-400-years-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>GREAT BARRIER REEF CORALS JUST EXPERIENCED HOTTEST OCEAN TEMPS IN 400 YEARS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Unlike a coral reef, which includes a network of different corals, this colossal coral is made up of nearly 1 billion genetically identical polyps of the coral species <i>Pavona clavus<\/i>. The coral is primarily brown with splashes of yellow, blue and red.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The team estimates the coral is between 300 and 500 years old, which provides hope during the ongoing global coral bleaching event, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/world-greatest-coral-bleaching-event-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">considered the worst in history<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;I see this mega coral as a living being, you know, that has the information of the conditions of the oceans for centuries. And this is very nice because we are in a moment that we don&#8217;t get very good news. We don&#8217;t hear very good news about the coral reefs.
