I was seeing caricatures \u2014 be they good or evil, depending on your point of view,\u201d\u00a0he tells <em>The Hollywood Reporter.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHe sought to make his narrative more complex, hoping his readers would have \u201ccomplicated\u201d feelings about the people he was chronicling. So he started his story with the disappearance of Jean McConville, a Belfast mother of 10 accused of being a British informant by the Irish Republican Army. She is one of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iclvr.ie\/en\/iclvr\/pages\/thedisappeared\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Disappeared<\/a>,\u201d a group of people thought to be quietly murdered by Republicans during the roughly 30-year period of sectarian violence called the Troubles. (The IRA has admitted to killing McConville, but has not copped to playing a role in all the disappearances.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tRadden Keefe traced the excruciating consequences of McConville\u2019s abduction on her family while simultaneously charting the radicalization of multiple young Provisional IRA volunteers \u2014 a couple of whom later became deeply disillusioned with their roles in the conflict. That approach was acclaimed internationally even as it tread politically and emotionally sensitive territory, revisiting a time that is still vivid for some in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNow, five years later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/fx\/\" id=\"auto-tag_fx_1\" data-tag=\"fx\">FX<\/a> is bringing that narrative to the screen, and presumably a much wider audience: The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-reviews\/say-nothing-review-fx-hulu-patrick-radden-keefe-1236056168\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-reviews\/say-nothing-review-fx-hulu-patrick-radden-keefe-1236056168\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">limited series adaptation of <em>Say Nothing<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>released all nine of its episodes Thursday (on Hulu in the U.S. and on Disney+ in other English-speaking countries). A generally faithful adaptation of the book, it was executive produced by Radden Keefe with veterans of the literary adaptation Brad Simpson and Nina Jacobson (who have produced <em>The Hunger Games, The Goldfinch<\/em> and<em> Crazy Rich Asians <\/em>among them). More than 3,500 people died in the Troubles, a conflict between nationalists who sought an independent Ireland (largely Catholic) and British loyalists (majority Protestant) that only officially ended in 1998. Seventeen people vanished, with four bodies not yet recovered. Northern Ireland has never had a full truth and reconciliation process, used in other civil conflicts to shed light on extensive human rights violations and to heal old wounds. An <a href=\"https:\/\/icrir.independent-inquiry.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ongoing attempt<\/a> by the U.K. government has been fiercely contested and challenged in court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn the book, Radden Keefe reported on family members still mourning the Disappeared as well as the past actions of public figures who are still alive, such as former Sinn F\u00e9in party president Gerry Adams and former Provisional IRA volunteer Marian Price. (Adams has long denied ever being in the IRA; Radden Keefe portrays him in a leadership role.) This was touchy investigative work. \u201cIt\u2019s a real story about real people and it felt very delicate and the kind of thing I\u2019d gotten right in the book, but I wouldn\u2019t necessarily entrust to just anyone\u201d in the entertainment business, Radden Keefe says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBut producer Simpson wasn\u2019t just anyone. A friend of Radden Keefe\u2019s for years, Simpson had praised the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2015\/03\/16\/where-the-bodies-are-buried\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2015 <em>New Yorker<\/em> story<\/a> that set Radden Keefe on his Troubles reporting in the first place. He requested a look at the manuscript, and in early fall of 2018, Radden Keefe acquiesced. Soon, Simpson and Jacobson were pitching Radden Keefe on a limited series adaptation where he would be an executive producer who would be consulted on every decision. \u201cWe wanted every bit of his expertise,\u201d explains Jacobson. \u201cThat would be dumb, to miss out on all that.\u201d (It helped that the writer had loved their work on FX\u2019s <em>The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story<\/em>, itself based on a 1996 nonfiction book.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tRadden Keefe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/books\/2022\/07\/02\/patrick-radden-keefe-interview-gerry-adams-is-sort-of-similar-to-the-sacklers-in-that-he-seems-to-sleep-quite-well-at-night-thank-you-very-much-theres-this-sort-of-implacability-to-both-of-them\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has previously<\/a> said that, as an American with Irish heritage but no strong ties to the country, being an outsider had its advantages in reporting <em>Say Nothing<\/em>. Sources didn\u2019t feel he had an agenda; he could \u201csay the uncomfortable thing\u201d and leave Belfast at the end of the day. And the FX limited-series team quickly homed in on another American, screenwriter Josh Zetumer, as a potential top scribe. In the 2000s, Zetumer had penned a script about British spies in the IRA, <em>The Infiltrator<\/em>, for Simpson at Appian Way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBut overall the creative team for the series took pains not to parachute in and out of a traumatic Northern Irish history. With Radden Keefe\u2019s book providing the bones of the story, and top creatives that were all American, the <em>Say Nothing<\/em> team found additional collaborators who had more skin in the game. The four-person writers\u2019 room included two Irish voices: Joe Murtagh (<em>The Woman in the Wall<\/em>) and Kirsten Sheridan (<em>In America<\/em>), the daughter of <em>My Left Foot<\/em> writer-director Jim Sheridan. British casting director Nina Gold (<em>The Crown<\/em>) worked with Northern Ireland\u2019s Carla Stronge (<em>Kneecap<\/em>) to populate the series with local talent. Lennox specifically advocated for the young actors Lola Petticrew and Anthony Boyle, whom he began working with in their teens on short films. \u201cAnthony and Lola grew up in West Belfast. They know this world,\u201d Lennox explains to <em>THR<\/em>. Petticrew was cast as the younger version of the series\u2019 main role, Dolours Price, while Boyle became Provisional IRA officer Brendan Hughes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAsked if he had any reservations about joining an American production taking on the Troubles, Lennox points to what he believes are great films about the conflict made by outsider filmmakers: <em>Hunger<\/em> and <em>Bloody Sunday<\/em> by British directors Steve McQueen and Paul Greengrass, respectively. At another point, he mentions French director Yann Demange\u2019s <em>\u201971 <\/em>with admiration. \u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of people not from the place who have had a really interesting perspective and something to say,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe <em>Say Nothing<\/em> creatives know that what they <em>do<\/em> say will be probed locally; as <em>The Irish Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/tv-radio\/2024\/11\/02\/the-disappeared-if-you-think-there-are-straightforward-heroes-and-villains-then-you-are-not-thinking-hard-enough\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">put it<\/a>, \u201cPeople will be scrutinising for characterisation, for dress, for period validity, for gesture and accent, for an authentic representation of the Troubles.\u201d And when it comes to the politics, \u201cwe\u2019re not going to please everyone,\u201d says Zetumer. Played by British actor Josh Finan as a young man and Northern Irish actor Michael Colgan in his later years, the series\u2019 Adams is a shrewd paramilitary leader with political ambitions and a talent for verbally obfuscating when asked direct questions. Each episode ends with a disclaimer that Adams has always denied he was ever a member of the IRA or participated in its violence. Adams has so far doubled down on these statements <a href=\"https:\/\/www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk\/news\/northern-ireland\/gerry-adams-denies-involvement-in-disappeared-killings-as-troubles-drama-launches-on-disney\/a937130624.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in response<\/a> to the series. \u201cI\u2019m hoping he tweets about the casting,\u201d Zetumer says, referencing a previous <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GerryAdamsSF\/status\/687625846518071298\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">social media post<\/a> from Adams about Pierce Brosnan\u2019s portrayal of an Adams-like figure in the 2017 film <em>The Foreigner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAnother <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/say-nothing-trailer-ira-jean-mcconville-1236042562\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/say-nothing-trailer-ira-jean-mcconville-1236042562\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aspect of <em>Say Nothing<\/em><\/a> that may be scrutinized is how the series portrays the Disappeared and their family members. Days after <em>THR<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/pose-producers-option-new-yorker-writers-book-say-nothing-fx-1192365\/\">reported in 2019<\/a> that Simpson and Jacobson\u2019s company Color Force had optioned the book, one of McConville\u2019s sons, Michael, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk\/entertainment\/son-of-jean-mcconville-upset-and-disgusted-by-tv-mini-series-plans\/37897689.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told the <em>Belfast Telegraph<\/em><\/a> that he was \u201cupset and disgusted\u201d by the plans. \u201cUsing what happened to our mother for entertainment is sickening,\u201d he told the paper. Radden Keefe says that at the time he had not conveyed in advance to the McConvilles that the series announcement was coming \u201cand that was a mistake on my part.\u201d He and Lennox have since met with family members of the Disappeared, including the McConvilles, through Northern Ireland nonprofit the Wave Trauma Centre to discuss the series. Radden Keefe has also kept family members apprised of developments, he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn a statement, a spokesperson for the Wave Trauma Centre says these family members \u201cappreciated the opportunity\u201d to speak directly with Radden Keefe and Lennox. The spokesperson added, \u201cThe deep trauma that these families suffered has not diminished over the years and understandably anything that causes them to have to revisit these events is always going to be very difficult for them.\u201d In the series\u2019 finale, a title card offers the contact information for the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims\u2019 Remains, established in 1999 to find and return the Disappeared\u2019s remains to their families.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThough <em>Say Nothing<\/em> and its approach to this thorny period will undoubtedly spark debate, the series\u2019 creatives express a belief that enough time has passed that general television viewers will be receptive to an ambivalent look at the violence. Newer generations are more removed from the sectarian conflict and the culture of silence it inspired, the team notes, while the refrain of young people fighting systemic injustice by rising up against the state remains timely.
